There’s something magic about fall travel. The air is getting crisper, summer crowds dwindle down and stunning autumn foliage comes to life. Whether you're savoring fall flavors at a farmers' market or enjoying a scenic hike, autumn is the perfect time to plan a getaway.

“Fall is a great time to travel because it’s a season of transition. Summer is over, the kids are back in school and the holidays are just around the corner. Think of it as a reset moment — and one with extra cozy vibes,” said Fora’s Co-Founder Henley Vazquez, who herself has been a travel advisor for 15+ years.

Below, we’re breaking down 12 of the best places to visit in fall. We’ve included a few top picks in the United States — domestic trips make up about 30% of our bookings this fall. These destinations are perfect for long weekend visits (but we won’t judge you for staying longer, either). We’ve also rounded up a few choices abroad for bucket-list adventures in the fall.

For personalized recommendations, connect with a Fora travel advisor. They’ll matchmake you to the ideal location, itinerary and hotel for your fall vacation — and unlock complimentary VIP perks along the way.

    Big Sur, California

“There is so much to see, do and taste in California in the fall,” Fora Advisor Amy Shamus said. “While other parts of the country start to cool down in October, in California, it’s known as the ‘golden month’ because the weather is still warm but the leaves start to change… and if you're near the water, the sunsets are to die for.”

Few (if any) places on this stretch of coastline are as enchanting as Big Sur. Nearly 100 miles of misty, rugged cliffs dotted with towering pine forests, pristine seal beaches and the occasional humpback whale sighting make Big Sur one of the United States’ most coveted destinations.

    Alila Ventana Big Sur

Alila Ventana Big Sur sits on a hill somewhere near the coast, which is obscured by fog. A large pool is surrounded by loungers while a outdoor lounge overlooks the resort grounds and pine forest.

Developments of any kind are rare in Big Sur, making the two-Michelin-Key resort Alila Ventana Big Sur a special exception. The property offers luxe accommodations with exclusive amenities like outdoor hot tubs and excellent California fusion dining. Fall brings fewer crowds to the resort, making Alila Ventana a peaceful retreat with opportunities for hiking, nature walks and wildlife viewing (Big Sur is one of the most biodiverse places in the United States). Plus, the resort’s wellness offerings, including Japanese-style baths, spa treatments and outdoor yoga, along with seasonal farm-to-table dining, enhance the overall experience.

Fora Advisor Cindy Rhee described Alila Ventana Big Sur as one of her favorite resorts in California. She shared a few things that set Alila apart, including the fact that meals and non-alcoholic drinks are included in the nightly rate, as well as some activities, like a guided hike through the Redwoods. She also explained that the resort rooms offer major bragging rights: “(they) are large and private, with balconies and stunning views.”

    Manchester, Vermont

There are few places in the United States that have a fall transition as beautiful as New England. The region’s forests become a sea of red, orange and yellow, with crisp temperatures that are perfect for outdoor adventures.

“The fall foliage in New England is simply stunning,” said Fora Advisor Alli Widman.

The cooler weather is ideal for activities like hiking, apple picking (a New England staple) and exploring historic towns — many of which offer a masterclass in 17th- and 18th-century architecture styles (Georgian, Victorian, Federal…). New England also regularly hosts harvest festivals and fairs during the fall, some of which have been celebrated since before the founding of the United States.

It’s worth noting that popular destinations like Vermont book up quickly. If you want to visit in fall, we strongly recommend booking by early summer.

Where to stay in Vermont in the fall: Kimpton Taconic Hotel

A cozy common area is lit by warm lighting and a stone fireplace. Classy furnishings fill the space, with fall gloom visible through shuttered windows.

Image courtesy of Kimpton Taconic Hotel

The Taconic is a small boutique hotel that exemplifies New England charm. Guests enjoy cozy accommodations with a contemporary aesthetic, farm-to-table dining and inviting common spaces among the historic Manchester Village. The hotel's elegantly designed rooms provide a perfect retreat after a day of exploring the local hiking trails and scenic roads.

The hotel also features three standalone cottages near Manchester Village. Each is notably more spacious than The Taconic’s guest rooms.

Fora Perks at Kimpton Taconic Hotel:

    • $50 hotel / resort credit, welcome amenity, upgrade & extended check-out whenever possible.

    South Carolina

A fall trip to South Carolina offers balmy temperatures (compared to the heat of summer). One of our favorite destinations is Bluffton, a quiet and scenic region that is perfect for exploring the wildlife-abundant May River, where you can embark on personalized boat tours or kayaking adventures. Bluffton’s historic Old Town district offers a unique blend of Southern hospitality and artisanal shops, while the city’s many fall festivals celebrate local culture and cuisine, allowing visitors to savor fresh seafood and regional specialties in a vibrant atmosphere.

    Montage Palmetto Bluff

Hardwood floors, white orchids, porcelain soaking tubs, comfy-looking massage tables fill Montage Palmetto Bluff's spa

Image courtesy of Montage Palmetto Bluff

Montage Palmetto Bluff is an upscale resort offering a grandiose blend of classic Southern sophistication and modern amenities. Along with well-appointed rooms, guests can enjoy outdoor activities such as boating, fishing, golfing and exploring nature trails, all set on the resort’s expansive — and private — 20,000 acres.

“It's the perfect family resort year-round,” said Fora Advisor Melanie Pink, detailing her own stay at Montage Palmetto Bluff. “My kids had the space to ride bikes and explore, with tree houses tucked around the property adding to the adventure.” She added, “we enjoyed incredible food and a variety of activities, plus multiple pools for endless fun.

“The Southern lowcountry charm is truly beautiful, with stunning Spanish moss hanging from the trees and idyllic swings scattered throughout the property,” Melanie said. “For the adults, there's a fantastic spa, fine dining and a speakeasy with the best drinks.”

    The Hamptons, New York

The Hamptons may be a famous summer destination, but Fora Advisor Cathy Boyle shared a different insight, “as a Hamptons resident, I can tell you the perfect time to visit is fall. The crowds have gone, the weather is still warm and seasonal activities like pumpkin picking and winery tours replace raucous beach parties.”

The Hamptons are a great place to visit in fall if you’re looking for a taste of the finer things. While the beaches are generally too cold for swimming by mid-fall, they’re still gorgeous for a walk along the water, and the small towns offer a mix of luxurious dining and high-end shopping in a laid-back setting. There are also art galleries, historic sites and cultural festivals that add variety to a fall getaway.

    The Roundtree, Amagansett

Manicured grounds and pathing lead to a quaint New England estate surrounded by fall trees

The Roundtree, Amagansett is one of the Hamptons’ best places to stay in fall. What looks like a modest cottage from the street reveals itself as a spacious boutique hotel with a delightfully contemporary look and feel.

“This charming hotel offers a cozy retreat with beautifully designed accommodations and top-notch amenities,” Cathy said.

Remodeled in 2020, the hotel features 14 rooms in classic cedar shingle buildings, including a main house, barn and multiple cottages.

“The peaceful setting feels more like a home than a hotel. The sprawling backyard has outdoor seating, heat lamps, bonfire pits — even a foosball table — and valued guests are treated more like family.”

Cathy continued, “complimentary bikes easily get you to the beach — there are even beach chairs and coolers at your disposal if you want to make a day of it.”

    Park City, Utah

Park City’s ski season usually begins by Thanksgiving, but it’s worth visiting beforehand. The city constantly hosts fall festivals and events, and the surrounding mountains and pine forests offer a tranquil backdrop for hiking, horseback riding and other outdoor activities.

“Fall is a beautiful time of the year in Park City,” Fora Advisor Sara Jeanne Gulley said. “You can easily lose yourself in the rich colors of the leaves covering the mountains during autumn.”

Sara Jeanne offered a few itinerary ideas, sharing that Park Silly Sunday Market is a fantastic, family-friendly day out featuring local vendors, farmers market stands, entertainment and food trucks in downtown. She said to make sure you don't miss the Park City Wine Festival (October 3–5) with various tastings, culinary events and adventures held throughout the city, or the Deer Valley Mountain Beer Festival.

    Tuscany, Italy

Fall is harvest season in Tuscany, inviting visitors to enjoy wine, olive oil tastings, truffle hunting and festivals. Tuscany in the fall also means fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed experience when exploring charming hilltop towns like San Gimignano and Montepulciano. Plus, the cooler temperatures are ideal for visiting Tuscany’s historical sites, such as Florence’s museums and Siena’s medieval streets, without the intense summer heat.

“Visiting Italy in the fall offers a delightful blend of comfortable weather, beautiful scenery, cultural richness and culinary adventures,” said Fora Advisor Karyn Pavich. “Seasonal foods make fall in Tuscany a paradise for epicureans. The grape and olive harvests are joyous celebrations, and it's the perfect time for truffle hunting.”

    Munich, Germany

Munich tops many lists of Europe’s best places to visit in fall. The city’s gardens and parks offer a scenic autumn ambiance, and its architectural beauty – from the historic Marienplatz to the grand Nymphenburg Palace – is even more striking in the crisp, clear fall air. Local markets and cafés offer tasty seasonal treats like roasted chestnuts and warm pastries.

“The fall weather is perfect for enjoying a picnic in Munich's English Garden or taking a day trip to Andechs and hiking up to the monastery for some of the greatest beer ever brewed,” said Fora Advisor Jane Henzerling. “It's also an ideal time for traveling to Füssen and biking the path to Neuschwanstein Castle to soak in its grandeur amidst the glorious autumn foliage.”

“Oktoberfest is a must-do at least once, but requires advanced planning,” shared Fora Advisor Kaitlan Leonard. She noted, “accommodations book out quickly, and tickets can be more difficult to secure than you would think, especially with larger groups.”

    Kyoto, Japan

Fall transforms Kyoto’s many historic temples, tranquil gardens and parks into a tapestry of reds, oranges and yellows. Iconic locations such as Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Arashiyama Bamboo Grove are especially stunning during this season, and, while still busy, aren’t as crowded as they are in summer and spring.

“Autumn is the undiscovered rival to the cherry blossom season (in Japan),” Fora Advisor Gunjan Sharma said.

Fall is also the season for cultural festivals, including the Jidai Matsuri and the Kurama Fire Festival, providing a unique glimpse into Japan's deep heritage. Additionally, Kyoto’s seasonal cuisine, featuring ingredients like matsutake mushrooms and chestnuts, enhances the culinary experience.

London radiates style and history while catering to travelers of all types.

“There's something so striking about the city in the fall,“ Fora Advisor Alexandra Hepworth said. “The leaves start to turn but the days are still long enough to enjoy being outdoors until the early evening.”

“This is a great time to walk the city and also visit museums as they are less crowded than in the summer months,” Alexandra shared. “You can take a leisurely stroll along the South Bank, pop into the V&A to catch the latest exhibition and take time for the Natural History Museum. You can also 'walk the Line’ — London's first dedicated art walk, featuring an evolving program of art installations.”

“If the weather is not on your side,” she continued, “there are many covered markets to experience, like Borough Market or a combination of shopping and dining at the Royal Exchange.”
