Curator’s statement

Long Island, Bahamas, one of the Bahamian Out Islands, holds a special place in my family's hearts. While most people are familiar with Nassau, we love the tranquility and peaceful flow of Long Island. Long Island has beautiful crystal-clear water and gorgeous white sand beaches. When we first stepped foot on the beach, it was as if we were stepping into a magazine. The beaches are truly magical. The people are warm and friendly and make you feel like family. The Bahamian cuisine is delightful! Fresh lobster and fish- so yummy, like you have never tasted before. Our family has vacationed here three times and we can't wait to go back.

Things to do in Bahamas

Kiteboarding in Bahamas

Dean's Blue Hole

Beaches and diving: Dean's Blue Hole is the second-deepest blue hole in the world! This is where the Vertical Blue Free Diving Competition is held every year. Not into free diving, no problem! Our family enjoys relaxing on the beach and watching the waves. For those of you that are a little more adventurous, there is cliff jumping here as well! What an experience to jump into the second-deepest blue hole! My son and husband have done this, but my daughter and I prefer to relax on the beach.

Cape Santa Maria

Beautiful resort with beautiful beach: The beach at Cape Santa Maria is wonderful! Crystal clear and calm like a swimming pool. Grab lunch here and be sure to eat some of their homemade Johnny cakes before heading to the beach to relax and snorkel.

Columbus Point

Enjoy the scenic views of the ocean and see where Christopher Columbus sailed: Columbus Point is a fabulous spot to get breathtaking scenic pictures of the ocean! Climb up a trail with stairs and view the monument where Christopher Columbus sailed. Enjoy the beautiful views and be sure to get lots of pictures of your family here.

Swimming Pigs

Swimming pigs of long island: While most people are familiar with the swimming pigs of Exuma, long island is also home to swimming pigs. We love to visit the swimming pigs every time we come to Long Island. While we have also visited Exuma, their pig beach is much more crowded. Every time we visit the pigs on Long Island, we are the only ones there. This is a MUST-DO experience!

Bahamian Ocean- Enjoy the Ocean

We always charter a boat when we come to Long Island. This is the best way to explore and enjoy all water activities. Snorkeling, spear fishing, fishing for your lunch and dinner, swimming with the pigs and turtles, boating in Long Island has so much to offer. Last time we were there we were fishing, and we were lucky to witness a whale shark come right up to our boat - truly amazing experience for our family.

Drive the island

Explore the island and all its hidden gems: We always rent a car when we come to Long Island. We like to spend a day at Dean's Blue Hole and other days we drive and see what adventures we can find. One time, we found a secluded beach. We thought we were the only ones there, then to our surprise, about four pigs came out of the trees and decided to swim with us! This is a memory that our family will never forget. We love to go off the beat and path and Long Island is the perfect place for that!

Day Trips

Rent a car and drive around the island! Enjoy Dean's Blue Hole, local secluded beaches and yummy beach bars! The options are endless for adventure and fun! Be sure and take a boat and do some fishing, snorkeling and enjoy the secluded beaches of the island.

Places to eat & drink in Bahamas

Coconut of Bahamas

While Long Island is small, there are many great places to eat! We always grab breakfast at the resort, Cape Santa Maria: They have local regional Bahamian cuisine as well as breakfast favorites.

Max's Conch Bar: We always stop here and grab lunch on our way to Dean's Blue Hole. Be sure and try the conch ceviche- it is to die for!

Chez Pierre: Definitely a hidden gem on the island! We always come here for dinner! This is a one-man operation, so be sure and call ahead for reservations! Every time we eat here, I always order the pasta with alfredo pesto sauce; it is divine!

Tiny's Hurricane Hole: This is a picturesque beach bar! Perfect place to stop for lunch while you are out and about exploring! Tiny's offers the usual beach bar cuisine with a spectacular view of the beach and ocean! I love the burger at Tiny's!

Cape Santa Maria Beach House Restaurant & Bar: The beach house offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. While relaxing at the beach for the day, we will walk to the beach house and enjoy lunch. Some of our favorite items for lunch are: Cracked Conch & Chips, Grouper Fingers & Chips and Cracked Lobster & Chips. One thing we love about this restaurant is that they will also cook your fish that you catch while fishing. This is a great way to enjoy dinner knowing that you caught the fish. We also love their Shrimp & Lobster Fettuccini, Local Grouper and Bahamian Lobster Tail. With so much on their menu, you will find something for even your pickiest critic.

Moonshine Beach Bar & Grill at Stella Maris Resort: We enjoy eating lunch here when we are out and about exploring the island. This beach bar is located on the Atlantic side, so this offers a spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean. We enjoy the Beach Bar Cheeseburger and the hot wings! This beach bar offers the perfect setting to relax and enjoy a Bahama Mama or Caribbean Sensation beverage.
