Things to do in Vienna

Woman walking on a city street.

Spring:

Explore the Stadtpark: In spring, Vienna's Stadtpark bursts with colorful blooms, especially its iconic statue of Johann Strauss. Take a leisurely walk among the flowers, enjoy the serene pond, and listen to live classical music performances.

Visit Schönbrunn Palace Gardens: Witness the breathtaking beauty of Schönbrunn Palace's gardens as they come to life in spring. The meticulously landscaped gardens and fragrant flowerbeds provide a picturesque setting for a leisurely stroll.

Join the Vienna City Marathon: For the active traveler, spring offers the Vienna City Marathon. Whether you're a runner or a spectator, this event adds an exciting, energetic dimension to your Vienna visit.

Summer:

Attend Open-Air Concerts: Vienna hosts a lot of open-air concerts in its parks during the summer. The Vienna Philharmonic's Summer Night Concert at Schönbrunn Palace is a highlight, offering a magical evening of classical music under the stars.

Relax by the Danube Canal: The Danube Canal comes alive in summer with pop-up bars, restaurants, and colorful murals. Enjoy a refreshing drink and soak up the sun.

Visit Prater Park: Prater Park is a summertime favorite with its iconic Giant Ferris Wheel and an array of thrilling rides. It's a fantastic spot for families and those seeking a nostalgic amusement park experience.

Autumn:

Explore Museums and Galleries: As the weather cools down, Vienna's many museums and galleries become more enticing. Spend your days immersed in art, history, and culture at institutions like the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Albertina.

Wine Tasting in the Vineyards: Vienna is surrounded by picturesque vineyards. In autumn, take a day trip to the Vienna Woods or nearby wine villages to savor locally produced wines and experience the charming wine culture. My favourite is Mayer am Nussberg.

Enjoy Heurigen Traditions: Heurigen are traditional wine taverns where you can enjoy fresh, young wine along with hearty Austrian dishes. Autumn is the perfect season to partake in this cozy and authentic Austrian tradition. The top two I always go to are Zimmermann on the Abrustergasse and Pfaarwirt.

Winter:

Visit Christmas Markets: Vienna's Christmas markets are renowned worldwide. Explore the festive stalls, savor roasted chestnuts and mulled wine, and shop for handmade crafts. The markets at Rathausplatz and Belvedere Palace are must-visit attractions. Another one I love which is in the city center is the one on Am Hof.

Attend Classical Concerts: Winter in Vienna is synonymous with classical music. Attend a concert at venues like the Vienna State Opera or Musikverein for an unforgettable musical experience. The Vienna's Boy Choir is one of the must see concerts when in town. If you love horses then go watch the Spanish Riding School practice or main performance.

Ice Skating at City Hall: The ice skating rink at the Rathausplatz transforms into a winter wonderland. Rent skates and enjoy gliding on the ice under the backdrop of the illuminated trees and sculptures.

Vienna's seasonal experiences offer something for everyone, from outdoor adventures in spring and summer to cultural immersion in autumn and the enchantment of winter's festivities. No matter when you visit, Vienna ensures a memorable and diverse experience throughout the year.

Places to eat & drink in Vienna

Breakfast

Guesthouse- I absolutely love this place for breakfast. The cozy, well-decorated setting provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere, making it an ideal spot to start your day. They are known for serving a sumptuous spread of both traditional Austrian and international breakfast options.

Landtmann- Landtmann is my second favourite place to have breakfast in Vienna. It is steeped in history and exudes an elegant, old-world charm. Vienna is known for its coffee culture, and Landtmann does not disappoint. They serve some of the finest coffee in the city. A cup of coffee here is not just a beverage; it's an integral part of Viennese tradition.

Lunch

Zum Schwarzen Kameel - I would wholeheartedly recommend Zum Schwarzen Kameel in Vienna for lunch because of its historic charm, culinary traditions and location. The legendary establishment dates back to 1618. Kameel (as the Austrians call it), is a place to enjoy your afternoon with friends or family either in the cozy areas inside or also outside under heat lamps wrapped up in a blanket.

Pfaarwirt - The restaurant serves delicious traditional Austrian cuisine that celebrates local flavors and culinary traditions. Although Pfaarwirt is located in Vienna, its setting gives you a sense of being in the countryside, providing a peaceful and tranquil environment for your outdoor lunch. Pfaarwirt provides seating options in its garden, from cozy nooks for intimate lunches to larger tables suitable for groups and families.

Dinner

Paco - Although known mainly as a wine bar, it has impeccable tapas to match. From their Croquetas de Jamón to the Paella, this place is a must go to place. It is not directly in the middle of the city which

Bacco - You won't find tourists in this place very often. It might look like a rundown restaurant but has one of the best experiences of Italian cuisine. Run by a small family, the there is a set price and you can only pay in cash. As you walk into the restaurant's cozy and rustic ambiance you are greeted by the family and brought to one of five tables. There is no menu, the chef will just come out to explain what there will be that evening and then it starts! Sit back and enjoy every surprising dish after another.

Do&Co Haas Haus - Do&Co Haas Haus is situated in one of Vienna's most iconic and picturesque locations, right on the famous Stephansplatz square. This prime setting offers stunning views of St. Stephen's Cathedral, creating a magical backdrop for your evening meal. The restaurant boasts a contemporary and elegant interior design. The ambiance is refined, making it a perfect choice for a special dinner or a romantic evening.

Drinks

Roberto American Bar - Roberto American Bar prides itself on having skilled mixologists who craft each drink with precision and creativity. There are two bars in the center of the city to choose from, my favourite and the original is the one on Bauernmarkt. It stands out with its unique American-style concept and offers a refreshing change of pace from traditional Viennese bars, making it an exciting and vibrant choice for drinks.

Palmenhaus - Palmenhaus is housed in a stunning glass and iron structure dating back to the late 19th century, offering a unique and historical backdrop for a sunny day. The greenhouse-like setting creates a magical atmosphere outside that sets it apart from typical bars. The bar's location within the Burggarten (Imperial Palace Gardens) provides guests with picturesque views of lush greenery and the surrounding historic architecture. It's an oasis of tranquility in the heart of the city.
