Functional by Design: The Penny Williamsburg
Curator’s statement

I stayed at The Penny Williamsburg for Live Forum 2024 - Fora's annual conference where advisors and partners come together to talk all things travel. I was so impressed by the smart layout, homey amenities, and, most of all, the design aesthetic throughout this boutique property in one of New York's coolest neighborhoods.

Upon entering the lobby, I knew The Penny was not your typical hotel. The lobby is small without feeling cramped, thanks to soaring ceilings. It immediately sets the tone with a bright red, vintage Galanz refrigerator and unique artwork by New Yorkers with developmental disabilities from their partnership with LAND Gallery and Pure Vision Arts. The receptionists are cool and young — they fit in perfectly with the Penny aesthetic.

From the moment I walked into my second-floor room, I was impressed by the functional design of the space. The layout is incredibly well-thought-out, maximizing every square inch without feeling cramped. The rooms are smartly arranged, with clever storage solutions that keep the space tidy and organized. I was glad to find both a sizable mini fridge and a microwave hidden away in the compact cupboard. I was also truly delighted to see a yoga mat, roller and block stashed in the closet. Everything seems to have a purpose, making it easy to settle in and feel at home quickly.

Comfort is paramount, and The Penny delivers on that front. Despite the smaller size of the rooms, they are remarkably livable. The bedding is plush, and the layout is designed for convenience, allowing for easy movement and comfort. The bathroom is smartly situated as well, with a sizable shower and counter space to store toiletries.

The eclectic aesthetic is another highlight. The hotel's decor blends various styles and textures, creating a vibrant atmosphere that reflects the artistic spirit of Williamsburg. Each piece of furniture and artwork feels carefully curated, and unique touches like colorfully striped Dusen Dusen robes add a touch of personality to the standard hotel offerings. And, as the best hotels do, The Penny offers room service from their rooftop restaurant, ElNico, which serves up well-crafted cocktails and Mexican cuisine. There are courtyards sprinkled throughout with gritty views of the city, perfect for sipping your morning coffee and journaling or enjoying a nightcap. From the selection of books on your coffee table (hello, Miranda July retrospective) to the pour-over coffee system (with step-by-step instructions), it’s a place where you can both relax and find inspiration.
