Curator’s statement
I recently spent three weeks on an Italian road trip that spanned from the Dolomites to Umbria and everything in between. While in Tuscany, I planned a two-night stay at Il Pellicano — one of three hotels under the ISSIMO umbrella of hotels. I had previously stayed at another property of theirs, Mezzatorre — which was gorgeous. So I was eager to experience their world-famous and longest-standing hotel of the bunch.

Il Pellicano — an impossibly chic hideaway on the Tuscan coast that has, for decades, been a well-kept secret among the jet set. With its effortlessly glamorous atmosphere, impeccable service and breathtaking setting, Il Pellicano is a scenic hub for visiting the Tuscan archipelago and a must on any Tuscan itinerary.

Nestled along the rugged cliffs of Porto Ercole, Il Pellicano exudes an old-world charm that’s been refined to perfection. The aesthetic is understated yet undeniably stylish. Think retro glamor with sun-drenched terraces, crisp white linens and the gentle hum of vintage Rivas pulling into the private cove. It’s no surprise that legendary figures like Jackie O. and European royals once flocked here, seeking the quiet elegance that defines this iconic retreat.

During my stay, I couldn’t help but draw comparisons to another jewel in the Issimo collection — Mezzatorre, the stunning cliffside retreat on Ischia where I had previously spent time. Like Mezzatorre, Il Pellicano masterfully balances exclusivity with warmth, creating an environment that feels both indulgent and inviting. Like Mezzatorre, Il Pellicano offers not only a pool, but a cliffside beach club with stunning panoramic views of the Mediterranean. Guest can relax on the comfortable lounge beds adorned in the hotel’s signature yellow stripes. There are a few private terraces built into the sides of the cliff with their own sets of lounge beds — you have probably seen these in photos! They are the perfect place to take a nap! I, of course, snagged a spot before heading to breakfast as these go quick!

For those who want to explore the area further, the hotel offers private boat charters. Guests can spend the day island-hopping to Isola del Giglio or Isola di Giannutri.

Il Pellicano’s charm is found not only in its cinematic beauty but also in the way it captures a particular kind of Italian luxury — one that is relaxed yet refined, glamorous yet grounded. Whether sipping an Aperol spritz by the saltwater pool or dining al fresco with a view of the Tyrrhenian Sea, every moment feels like a scene from a La Dolce Vita dream.
