One Week in Oman, Starting at the Al Bustan Palace in Muscat!
Curator’s statement

A lovely place that is unpretentious and makes you feel like an honored guest. The staff is a who's who of the United Nations, so just chatting with the staff who hail from places as far away as Kenya, Vietnam, Philippines, Spain is itself a learning experience!

The Al Bustan Palace (now a Ritz Carlton) is a former sultan's palace that is now a Ritz Carlton. It is situated at the foot of the Al Hajar Mountains and has a private beach that looks out into the Sea of Oman. Since it is about 20 minutes away from central Muscat, it also offers a peaceful respite from the city, though this means that getting to any other attraction in the city requires getting a taxi or a rental car.

Guests are treated to the scent of frankincense as they enter the cavernous lobby that is redolent of its past royal history. The staff and service they offer are truly superb and make you feel like a welcome guest. The welcome snacks delivered to our room consisted of assorted fruit, a fruit cake and assorted candies only enhanced our welcome experience.

Given the proximity to India, the fare on offer covers not only Omani food, but also Indian and continental dishes. The wide spread of items at breakfast that included chilled coconut water in the original coconut sitting on ice, assorted South Indian delicacies like "upma" (a savory dish made out of cream of wheat), varieties of chutneys and sauces is certainly a highlight here.

Need to know

I recommend the Al Bustan Palace if you want unspoken luxury, with an excellent service and food, to boot.
