Location
Hokkaido is the northernmost island of Japan with beautiful and diverse landscapes. From impressive mountains to serene countrysides to a lively city, you will find it all in Hokkaido. Hokkaido’s location in the north has colder sea temperatures, creating a haven for fishing and amazing fresh seafood. Separated by the Tsugaru Strait from Honshu, Japan's main island where Tokyo resides, Hokkaido offers a distinct travel experience compared to the bustling metropolis of the world’s largest city.
Getting from Tokyo to Hokkaido
To get from Tokyo to Hokkaido, you will fly from Narita Airport (NRT) or Haneda Airport (HND) to New Chitose Airport (CTS) in Sapporo. There are multiple nonstop daily flights serviced by several airlines.
When to go
Hokkaido is a year-round destination, but if you are going with a goal to ski, see the cherry blossoms or fall foliage, be sure to plan your trip accordingly.
For skiing: December to February
Travel to ski resorts in Niseko and Rusutsu for the ideal powder conditions for skiing and snowboarding and catch the ice sculpture at the Sapporo Snow Festival in early February.
For cherry blossom viewing: Generally late April to early May
Wait until late April to early May for the cherry blossoms to bloom, as Hokkaido’s sakura bloom later than in mainland Japan.
For summer escapades: June to September
Escape to Hokkaido in the summer, when temperatures in mainland Japan can be extremely hot and humid.
For fall foliage: October to November
See the stunning fall foliage of Japanese maple leaves around this time and be prepared for temperatures to start to get chilly, with likelihood of snow in late November. Extend your trip to include the vibrant fall foliage of both Tokyo and Hokkaido.
Getting Around Hokkaido
As in mainland Japan, Hokkaido offers a well-developed transportation network, including trains, buses and rental cars.
Where to visit
Otaru: Discover the romantic charm of Otaru, a historical canal city, a 45-minute train ride from Sapporo. Stroll along the picturesque Otaru Canal, indulge in the freshest seafood and sushi, and snack along the many food booths lining Sakaimachi Street. Japanese whisky enthusiasts will want to take a short train ride from Otaru to Yoichi to visit the Nikka Whisky Distillery.
Niseko: While most known for skiing, Niseko is a desirable destination in all seasons. Highly recommend staying at the Park Hyatt Niseko — which is a ski-in/ski-out resort in the winter and has beautiful views of Mount Yotei, the “Mount Fuji of Hokkaido” — and spending a night or two at Zaborin Ryokan, a modern Japanese luxury inn, with private indoor and outdoor onsens (hot spring baths).
Sapporo: Hokkaido's vibrant capital boasts a modern skyline, historical sites and a lively nightlife scene. Don't miss the Susukino district, the renowned Sapporo Beer Museum and Odori Park, a green oasis in the heart of the city. Sapporo can be your jumping-off point for exploring Hokkaido or your final destination after a Tokyo adventure.
Furano and Biei: Escape to the idyllic countryside of Furano and Biei, known for their endless lavender fields in bloom during summer. Hike or bike through these picturesque landscapes and soak in the tranquility.
Lake Toya: Escape to the serene beauty of Lake Toya, a volcanic lake nestled amidst picturesque mountains. Enjoy outdoor activities like boating, fishing or simply soaking in the breathtaking scenery.
Hakodate: Immerse yourself in the charming port city of Hakodate, renowned for its historical architecture, delicious seafood and mesmerizing views from Mount Hakodate. Take a ride on the nostalgic Hakodate tram for a unique city experience. Hakodate can be a delightful stop on your Tokyo to Hokkaido journey.
