Curator’s statement
Ordinarily, when I set off for an adventure before sunrise, I find myself completely alone. But on this particular morning in Agra, the lobby of the Grand Mercure Agra was anything but quiet. Tour groups, easily identifiable by their matching name badges, gathered in clusters, exchanging polite small talk before boarding their coach buses — ready to experience the Taj Mahal en masse.

Where to stay
For my trip to India, I planned everything independently — no buses, no rigid itineraries — just my own schedule, my own pace. Navigating India as a solo traveler is no small feat, from securing an e-visa to figuring out train tickets, but that morning, as I watched the tour groups shuffle about, I felt immense gratitude for my freedom. My visit to the Taj Mahal would be entirely on my own terms.

The Taj Mahal at sunrise
One of the best decisions I made was staying at Grand Mercure Agra, a modern, comfortable hotel with the incredible advantage of having the Taj Mahal Metro Station right across the street. While Agra is often associated with chaotic traffic and rickshaw rides, the Agra Metro is a game-changer — effortless, efficient and budget-friendly. It took me straight to the east gate of the Taj Mahal in minutes, bypassing the morning congestion that so many travelers dread.
Of course, traveling independently doesn’t mean traveling in isolation. As a photographer, experiencing the Taj Mahal at sunrise was a non-negotiable, and to make the most of it, I arranged for a local photographer, Shana Akhtar, to be my guide. Right on schedule, Shana met me in the lobby, and off we went.
There are many places where I confidently explore alone, but as a solo female traveler heading to one of the world’s most famous landmarks before dawn, having a local companion felt like the right choice. Beyond his photographic expertise, Shana provided valuable insight, historical context and a reassuring presence.
The Taj Mahal at sunrise is every bit as magical as it is legendary. In the soft morning light, the white marble shimmers, shifting hues from pale pink to golden. As expected, several thousand other visitors had the same idea, queuing up in separate lines — men and women divided per Indian security protocols. Though I had just met Shana, I was relieved to reunite with him after security so we could navigate the crowds together.
Nothing prepares you for the moment you step through the grand Darwaza-i-Rouza and see the Taj Mahal for the first time. It is simply breathtaking. People — myself included — stop in their tracks, instinctively reaching for their cameras.
As a photographer, having Shana as a guide was a game-changer. Despite the throngs of visitors jostling for the perfect shot, he knew exactly where to position me before the crowds filled the frame. While AI can now remove unwanted people from photos, I much prefer capturing the perfect shot in real time.

After soaking in the beauty of the Taj Mahal, I hopped back on the Agra Metro — another reason I loved staying at the Grand Mercure Agra. The same metro line conveniently connects to Agra Fort, making it easy to continue a day of sightseeing without the hassle of negotiating with tuk-tuk drivers or getting stuck in traffic. Exploring Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, felt like stepping into a time capsule of Mughal history. From its red sandstone walls to the intricate marble chambers, it’s a destination that deserves more than just a quick visit.
For those staying at Grand Mercure Agra, I highly recommend setting aside a day for a trip to Fatehpur Sikri. Just an hour’s drive from Agra, this abandoned Mughal city is an architectural wonder. With its grand palaces and courtyards frozen in time, it offers a fascinating glimpse into India’s royal past — without the overwhelming crowds of the Taj Mahal.
From a seamless metro ride to a stunning sunrise at the Taj Mahal, my time in Agra was effortless and enriching — proof that you don’t need to be on a guided tour to experience India’s magic. Whether you’re a solo traveler, a couple or a family, staying at Grand Mercure Agra makes exploring this historic city both easy and unforgettable.
