Plan Your Luxurious Private Island Retreat in Fiji
Curator’s statement

With more than 300 islands, Fiji offers everything from intimate boutique resorts and adult-only barefoot luxury hideaways to private island resorts that guests can have all to themselves. I've been lucky enough to have traveled to Fiji a handful of times; on a family vacation, a romantic week with my fiancé, a girlfriend's getaway, and most recently, I organized a private incentive trip for a luxury client. This guide will showcase a few of Fiji's top private island resorts for those who want to plan their own luxury private island retreat as well as describe a few other of my favorite resorts.

Fiji's top luxury resorts:

In Fiji, you can enjoy warm island hospitality, thriving coral reefs, and seaside spa treatments all on your own private island. Let's look at some of Fiji's top luxury resorts:

Kokomo Private Island: A contemporary, ultra-lux private island retreat, Kokomo Private Island is located in Fiji’s south and is cradled by the Great Astrolabe Reef, known for its world-class diving and turquoise waters. Visitors can indulge in the luxury of space as they spread out across four expansive residences (each with four, five, or six rooms) and twenty-one beachfront villas. Only reachable via private helicopter or seaplane, Kokomo offers the ultimate in privacy and pampering for decerning travelers.

Laucala Private Island: The “Grand Dame” of luxury Fijian hospitality, Laucala is one of the world’s most exclusive private island resorts and perfect for a much-needed tropical refuge. The island oozes unmatched luxury and privacy coupled with a sustainable and authentic Fijian design. Located off of the northern island of Taveuni, Laucala is the pinnacle of remote indulgence. The resort is fully inclusive of everything, most notably unlimited spa treatments, golf rounds, and a dedicated buggy to get around the island.

Royal Davui Island Resort: Having recently gone through a renovation, this resort will bring complete isolation and tranquility. Visitors at Royal Davui, is a boutique barefoot luxury resort with each villa boasting a stunning ocean view. Located in the spectacular Beqa Lagoon, this pristine slice of paradise is surrounded by endless white sand beaches and turquoise waters to keep guests busy with activities or simply nothing at all.

Vomo Island Fiji: A chic, family-friendly resort complete with newer beachfront residences, VOMO is the perfect luxury retreat for multi-generational travelers. Families can spread out across four beachfront residences with up to four bedrooms each, plus 28 resort villas. Kids can spend the day in the dedicated Kids Village while parents enjoy a day out on the water or relaxing at the adults-only Rocks Pool and Bar. Rebel Wilson was a guest here once!

Wakaya Club and Spa: Steeped in authentic hospitality, Wakaya is one of Fiji’s private island resorts with an intimate feel. Located in the northeast region of Fiji, Wakaya is an unspoiled paradise with just 10 beachfront bures and two luxurious villas. The island is abundant in dense tropical forests, stunning beaches, and is surrounded by a protected marine reserve. Guests will also enjoy unlimited resort activities including use of the tennis facility and 9-hole golf course.

Yasawa Island Resort and Spa: As if the sheer beauty surrounding Yasawa Island Resort & Spa were not enough to entice travelers, add to the mix five-star dining, world-class diving, Fijian culture, a myriad of water sports, and discover true tropical bliss. The stunning slice of paradise, located on Fiji's northwest on one of the most remote and untouched isles, is only a private 30-minute flight from the international airport. Located on 7,000 acres of lush tropical foliage, Yasawa is paradise, with 11 expansive white sandy beaches, secluded private island picnics, and the world-famous Blue Lagoon Caves.

Day trips

If you have time, the Jet Boat Safari on the Sigatoka River is amazing and should be booked in advance as it does sell out.

Where to eat and drink

If you are staying at one of these private resorts, chances are all of your meals are included. However, with international flights from the USA, you will likely have some time in Nadi or Denarau Island, awaiting an international or domestic flight so here's a list of some favorite eats not too far from the airport:

Denaru Island Resorts (about 30 minutes by car from the airport)

Hilton:

  • Maravu Asian Cuisine - dinner only

Radisson:

  • Chantara Thai - dinner only

  • Teppanyaki - dinner only - reservations are a must

  • Byblos Lebanese- dinner only

Wyndham

  • Mamacita’s Mexican – lunch and dinner

Sofitel

  • Republic Nightclub Only nightclub in Denarau;

The Palms

  • CaféO- locally owned; great for breakfast (try the Potat-O) and lunch

Sheraton

  • Bulaccino Coffee – locally owned and loved coffee bar

Port Denarau restaurants

  • Lulus: Great for casual breakfast, lunch and dinner. Convenient to where the ferry departs

  • Nadina: Yummy traditional Fijian food. Tucked around the corner behind the bank and Indigo. Great place to try kava in the evenings

Need to know

Nadi International Airport is small, with only one lounge which you can get into with AMEX Platinum or you can pre-book a flexible lounge pass. Highly recommended as there is really nothing else in the terminal.
