Al Moudira is the brainchild of Zeina Aboukheir, a Lebanese artist and entrepreneur with a passion for architecture, culture and the beauty of the Egyptian desert. The construction of the hotel began in 1995, with Zeina meticulously designing every detail over several years. Her vision was to create a timeless sanctuary that celebrated the art, culture and craftsmanship of Egypt. Al Moudira became a work of art, reflecting her artistic vision and dedication to heritage preservation.
The name “Al Moudira” was chosen by Zeina, as it means “The Lady in Charge” in Arabic. Her staff often summoned her with this phrase, and it stuck as the hotel's official name. The name reflects and pays homage to her hands-on involvement in every aspect of the hotel’s creation, from conceptualizing the architecture to curating the antique furniture.

An expansive oasis
Set on 20 acres of lush land, Al Moudira offers both luxury and sustainability. Ten acres are devoted to the hotel’s beautifully landscaped grounds, filled with fountains, gardens and courtyards, while the remaining 10 acres are a working farm. This farm provides fresh, organic produce used in the hotel’s kitchen, reinforcing the deep connection between Al Moudira and its natural surroundings. You must go for a walk to visit the animals — the ostrich were my favorites.
A treasure trove of antiques
One of the standout features of Al Moudira is its impressive collection of antiques. I also collect as a result of my mother's and my shared love for old, beautiful finds. Sourced from Alexandria and various other parts of the world, these unique pieces add a layer of authenticity and charm to the property’s aesthetic. To preserve their integrity, the hotel employs dedicated carpenters who specialize in the restoration and upkeep of antique furniture and décor. Designed to evoke the grandeur of Egyptian palaces, the hotel features tall arches, intricate mosaics and serene courtyards filled with fountains and greenery. Zeina collaborated with local artisans to bring this vision to life. This ensures the hotel’s aesthetic tells a story while incorporating Asian and Mediterranean design.

Villas and suites for ultimate privacy
In addition to its 54 individually styled rooms, Al Moudira also has a variety of stunning private villas for guests seeking seclusion. These spacious villas feature elegant interiors, private courtyards and outdoor seating areas surrounded by gardens. Some villas also include private pools, making them the perfect retreat for families, honeymooners or groups of friends.
The library: A haven for book lovers
For those who like to read, Al Moudira’s library is something special. Home to over 10,000 books, the collection spans diverse subjects, with many titles reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Egypt and the Mediterranean. Guests can relax in the library’s cozy seating areas while enjoying wealth of stories or simply flipping through the beautiful images.

A Feast for the Senses
Dining at the hotel is an experience. The main restaurant serves a mix of Egyptian and Mediterranean cuisine, prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients — many of which come straight from the on-site farm. From rich tagines to light mezzes, every dish reflects the region’s culinary heritage. Guests can also enjoy drinks and lunch at the pool bar, making it the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploration.
An oasis of relaxation
The hotel also features a large pool, set amidst lush palm trees and flowering gardens. For ultimate relaxation, the neighboring spa offers Egyptian massages and treatments, ensuring guests leave feeling rejuvenated.
Tip: Be sure to order their margarita, but ask them to add hibiscus! I enjoyed plenty of these while lounging poolside during my stay.

Gateway to ancient wonders
Conveniently located near Luxor’s most famous archaeological sites, Al Moudira is the perfect base for exploring. You can visit the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon. After a day of discovery, guests can retreat to the hotel and take in the beauty of the starlit desert sky. I coordinated a hot air balloon ride (not affiliated with the hotel) during my time in Luxor. It was an incredible way to see the scale of these sites from a bird’s-eye view.
Perfect for weddings and special events
Al Moudira is also a breathtaking venue for weddings and special events. The hotel offers full property buyouts, providing exclusive use of the entire 20-acre estate for a truly unforgettable celebration. From intimate ceremonies to grand receptions, Al Moudira’s beautiful courtyards, lush gardens and elegant interiors create the perfect backdrop for any occasion. The dedicated staff works closely with event planners to ensure every detail is tailored to the guests’ desires, making each event unique!
Al Moudira is more than just a hotel — it’s a journey back in time, steeped in history and luxury. This boutique escape has become an icon of elegance and cultural immersion in Luxor. Whether you’re seeking a romantic getaway, a peaceful retreat, a cultural experience or a magical venue for a special event, this gem delivers an unforgettable experience that captures the spirit of Egypt. This very quickly became one of my personal favorite stays — a must for anyone who appreciates a well-designed hotel with a strong sense of place.
