Ship Overview
The Icon of the Seas is Royal Caribbean’s latest marvel, blending cutting-edge design with unparalleled luxury and entertainment. Among the ship’s many highlights is the Aqua Action show, a jaw-dropping aquatic showcase of world-class athletes performing daring acrobatics and stunts over water. On the Absolute Zero ice rink, the Starburst Elemental Beauty show is the main event. It is an amazing performance where ice skaters tell a story of elemental, cosmic magic through dance and colorful visuals.
When it’s time to indulge your sweet tooth, head over to the Desserted Dessert Bar. This is a perfect afternoon stop for dessert lovers, offering a range of adult and kid-oriented milkshake flavors, from churros to cookies and cream. After eating a treat, adults can go to the Hideaway. It's a place for adults only with great drinks and a pool that looks out over the ship's wake.
For those looking to stay in the heart of the action, the Swim and Tonic swim-up bar is the perfect spot. Immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere while sipping on refreshing cocktails without ever leaving the pool (where children are allowed). As the sun goes down, the ship comes alive with exciting entertainment options, including the Dueling Pianos venue. Here, talented musicians compete in a lively battle of melodies, creating an unforgettable evening of music and fun.
Dining on the Icon of the Seas is a culinary adventure. The AquaDome Market offers new food options like gyros and dessert crepes and caters to different palates with fresh and flavorful dishes. At Basecamp, you can savor comfort food classics like chicken and waffle bites and fried cheese curds, providing the perfect bite after a day of exploring. For a unique treat, visit Izumi in the Park to try their famous bubble ice cream cones, a whimsical twist on a classic dessert.

What to Know When Cruising to the Western Caribbean
The US dollar is widely accepted in most Western Caribbean ports, but it's a good idea to have some local currency on hand for small purchases or tips in Mexico. Credit and debit cards are also commonly accepted.
Itinerary Overview:
Day 1: Embark in Miami
Day 2: Sea Day
Day 3: Roatan, Honduras
Day 4: Costa Maya, Mexico
Day 5: Cozumel, Mexico
Day 6: Sea Day
Day 7: Perfect Day at CocoCay, Bahamas
Day 8: Disembark in Miami
Roatan, Honduras
Roatan, Honduras, is known for its beautiful waters for snorkeling and diving and is a port location. There are two cruise ports in Roatan, one of which is exclusive to Carnival Cruises. All other ships (including Royal Caribbean) will dock at Coxen Hole, so keep this in mind if adventuring out on your own.
In addition to snorkeling and diving options, there are a plethora of animal-related experiences across the island. If there is an activity your group would like to do, you are strongly encouraged to research the various companies before booking. Not all have the same standards regarding conditions for animals.
Remember that Roatan is 1 hour behind “ship time,” which will stay in the Central time zone (and is two hours behind the Miami/Eastern Time Zone from where you departed). On the day you set sail from Maimi, turn off the auto-time zone feature in your phone’s settings and manually set the time so you do not have issues getting back to the ship on time because your phone says local time (when the ship stayed on “ship time”).
Costa Maya, Mexico
Costa Maya is a good starting point for many local trips, including Mayan ruins, Bacalar Seven Colors Lagoon and the nearby town of Mahahual. Be forewarned, the port was designed as a giant maze to trap cruisegoers from ever leaving! If you are going to the nearby town of Mahahual by yourself, keep walking past the pool and stores until signs point toward taxis. The approved local yellow taxis are all organized through the port and will have signs on the side noting “Taxi Tour - Costa Maya.” From the port to Mahahual, it costs $4 per person, whether taking a small taxi or a van full of other guests.
Chacchoben Mayan Ruins is a relatively close excursion option at only an hour or so drive each way (beware, they will throw in a pineapple “plantation” that is better used to stretch your legs and skip its restrooms). While Chacchoben is not as large as Chitzen Itza, it allows visitors to walk and climb on many of the remaining structures. Note that if you plan to film videos or vlogs, they will require you to purchase an additional filming ticket onsite.
Mahahual town and beachfront is a fun, quaint and easy-to-navigate adventure via a 10-minute taxi ride from the port. There are many restaurants along the beachfront to choose from, though the most highly recommended is the Krazy Lobster. Level-set expectations regarding “beachfront,” as the Mahahual area containing beach loungers is 15’ from the water’s edge to where the tables and chairs for the restaurant sections begin, so quite narrow. The water is beautiful and good for swimming a long way. Restaurants offer massages along the sidewalk for $$50 per hour, but are set up right along the sidewalk.
While it is normally recommended to have some local currency for port stops, excursions, taxis, restaurants, etc. Costa Maya (and Cozumel) will quote prices in US dollars (and prefer payment in such). Bringing Mexican pesos is inconvenient for both parties involved, as they (or you) must scramble to calculate the exchange rate to pay.
Cozumel, Mexico
Cozumel has too many options to name, though it is generally considered one of the best snorkeling areas in the region.
If not interested in group excursions, there are many raucous bar options right at the port, such as Señor Frog’s, Margaritaville and Tequila A GoGo. Just keep your head straight enough to make it back to the ship on time!
Cozumel has three separate ports, which is important to note when heading out on an independent adventure. One port is exclusive to Carnival/Princess cruises. Another port downtown is used by other companies (such as Norwegian and MSC), and the International Terminal is almost exclusively for Royal Caribbean/Celebrity. Do note that the Cozumel cruise port uses detection dogs for arriving and departing cruise guests.
For those looking to snorkel and/or enjoy some beach time, two great (but very different) options are The Cabana Beach (south of the cruise port, next to Chankanaab) and Buccanos (which is north of the port, past downtown Cozumel). The Cabana Beach is quite upscale and exclusive (not all-inclusive), with various cabanas that must be pre-booked. It has great snorkeling right off its shore, including a cave that goes into the ocean in front of one of the VIP cabanas (#1). Note that the great snorkeling at this location is due to a rocky ledge with steps leading into the water (the sand does not slowly lead into the water here). Cabana Beach is about a ~$12 USD taxi ride each way from the port.
Buccanos is a relaxed (not all-inclusive) beach club by day and one of the best restaurants on the island by night. Those interested in good food and drinks, lounging by the beach or pool and snorkeling should head here. They have a small beach entrance into the water, but like The Cabana Beach, much of their coast is rocky. This makes it easy to snorkel with lots of fish. Buccanos is a great option that does not need to be pre-booked and is a ~$12 USD taxi ride each way from the port. Buccanos does have an entrance fee of ~$20 USD. However, this is applied to your food and drink tab upon departure. If going, remember to bring beach towels from the ship.
Taxi drivers in Cozumel are known for telling riders that their desired destination is closed (or that they have somewhere else they suggest). Be sure to tell them about your desired destination. Call ahead to make sure they are open.
Perfect Day at CocoCay, Bahamas
The holy grail of private islands, Perfect Day at CocoCay has something for everyone, including those with no set plans. Remember to check out a towel before leaving the ship. You will need to bring your own towels (but they have a kiosk on the beach if you forget them). Bring your equipment along instead of renting from Royal Caribbean for those interested in snorkeling.
Hideaway Beach is the newest addition to Perfect Day at CocoCay. It is a great choice for adults only, but it costs extra. However, that additional cost gains entrance into one of the island's best areas. Royal Caribbean has replicated all of Perfect Day at CocoCay’s best features in one location. The area has more bars available to guests, a large swim-up bar area with a (very loud) DJ, a heated pool, a pizza/empanada food stall, a Snack Shack and a sports bar called On the Rocks. The beach was designed as a small cove that limits waves and jellyfish, which are common in other areas like South Beach.
Groups looking for an elevated food and beach experience should book the Coco Beach Club or one of the swanky cabanas within (again, booking a cabana here might be cheaper than individual tickets, depending on the number in your group). The lunch at Coco Beach Club is top-notch, with filet mignon, lobster and a fantastic tapas spread (among other options). Beach loungers in this area come with towels, so there is no need to check out towels from the ship. Compared to Hideaway Beach, which is 18+ only, Coco Beach Club allows children.
Thrill Waterpark boasts the tallest waterslide in North America, Daredevil’s Peak (but also has six other great slide options). A word of caution — beware of the Screeching Serpent slide! For large families, booking a cabana at Thrill Waterpark might save money versus booking individual tickets.
Those looking to go on Up Up and Away, the helium balloon on Perfect Day at CocoCay, make sure you book through the Cruise Planner as soon as your cruise is confirmed. This books up quickly (but is often canceled/refunded due to inclement weather).
Bar service while enjoying the beach loungers across the island is hit or miss, so if you would rather not have to get up and make your way to a nearby bar, consider booking a cabana or day bed at one of the many “neighborhoods” across the island (which come with a dedicated server). South Beach is a bit more geared towards adults (and is the farthest away from the ship), while Breezy Bay and Chill Island are quite close and family-friendly.
Prices for Perfect Day at CocoCay change a lot, depending on the ship and when you go. Book your reservations in the Cruise Planner right away. You can get the lowest prices possible. Check back often to see if the price goes down.

Packing Considerations
Western Caribbean cruises have all the trappings of everything you would expect from a warm, sunny Caribbean cruise. Plan to bring plenty of bathing suits, cover-ups, flip-flops and sunscreen. Depending on your excursions, water shoes might be a good idea since Cozumel involves several rocky beach entrances.
On 7-day cruises on Icon of the Seas, you will have two formal nights (usually night 2 and night 6). If you feel comfortable, bring some dressier clothes. You will see everything from sundresses to ball gowns and tuxedos. Other theme nights include the '70s, Caribbean, and white nights, so bring along whatever you can fit!
