Getting there
After visiting the bustling city of Lisbon, I took the train to Porto and enjoyed the scenic journey with stops at quaint towns showcasing the beautiful tile work that Portugal is known for. A quick taxi from the train station took me into the heart of the city and the ideally-located Torel 1884 Suites & Apartments. Porto is a smaller city compared to Lisbon with less steep hills, which makes walking the ideal way to explore the city, though comfortable shoes are still a must for some of the steeper climbs and stairs. The property is located a quick walk away from the Sao Bento Train Station for another transit option. You won't want to miss this iconic station, which attracts thousands of daily visitors with its stunning tiles.
The hotel
The entrance to the main building, which houses the suites, is lined with beautiful plants, leading up to a reception desk showcasing unique artwork and decor next to a grand staircase. I was immediately welcomed with luggage assistance and a cappuccino while I was checked in and presented with an ornate key for my suite. It's important to note that the Torel apartments are located in a building a short walk from the main building and are a great option for families looking for an AirBnB type stay.
Features and amenities
There are 12 rooms and suites available in the main house with hotel amenities including turndown service. The 11 apartments are located on a nearby pedestrian street, Rua das Flores. The unserviced apartments feature kitchens and living areas for families and make for a more quiet, private stay. Both are housed in historic buildings that have been renovated to include modern touches while still retaining immense historic charm with rich color palettes. I chose the superior double room, which was sleek, spacious and featured an arched window overlooking the main street below.
Need to know
I recommend Torel 1884 Suites & Apartments for couples, solo travelers and families alike with their wealth of accommodation options to fit any travel style. Guests can look forward to assistance with making dining reservations, booking tours and receiving local recommendations from staff that are readily available day or night. The on site restaurant Bartolomeu Bistro rounds out the property with a delicious breakfast and amazing wine options for happy hour or dinner after a day of exploring the city.
