Where to stay in Jaipur, India
One of the most immersive experiences of my visit was an early morning bike tour with Le Tour de India. At 5:30 am, I found myself in the back of an Uber, winding through quiet neighborhoods. The city was still shrouded in darkness, save for the occasional streetlight flickering on the pavement. As I stepped out of the car, I was greeted by the melodic call to prayer echoing through the streets, and, in the distance, the soft glow of bicycle lights confirmed I was in the right place.
A ride through Jaipur’s soul
The morning unfolded in a way I never could have expected. What I thought would be a standard bike tour — cycling past landmarks and absorbing snippets of history — turned into something far more profound.
Our small group, including a trio of Japanese women, followed our guide, Himmat, through the awakening city. Our first stop was feeding the sacred cows, an act deeply rooted in Hindu tradition. We learned how every part of the cow contributes to daily life, from its milk to its dung, which is used for insulation and fuel.
We then pedaled towards Hawa Mahal, its intricate pink façade still cloaked in shadow before sunrise. By the time we reached the bridge leading to Prince Albert Hall Museum, the sky had begun to lighten, and, for a brief moment, we had the rare opportunity to ride freely, unburdened by Jaipur’s famously chaotic traffic.

The markets: Jaipur’s beating heart
To truly understand a city, you must visit its markets. And Jaipur’s are nothing short of mesmerizing. Parking our bikes, we stepped into a world of color, scent and sound. The vegetable market buzzed with women from the countryside selling their fresh produce, while the flower market was a spectacle of artistry and devotion. Here, florists sat cross-legged on the ground, weaving garlands of marigolds and roses for weddings and temple offerings. I watched brides-to-be arrive, carefully selecting arrangements for their big day. It was a privilege to witness such an integral part of Indian culture in action.

A moment of spiritual energy
The highlight of the tour, however, was our stop at Govind Dev Ji Temple. This Hindu temple is one of the most sacred in Jaipur, and, each morning, devotees gather for a ritualistic prayer and chanting session. I was astonished that we were not only allowed to observe but also encouraged to participate. The energy inside was electrifying — the rhythmic chanting, the clapping, the shared devotion. I didn’t need to understand the words to feel their power. It was a moment of pure, unfiltered connection to the soul of Jaipur.
A culinary leap of faith
As the tour came to a close, we stopped at a bustling street food stall for samosa kachori and jalebi. Having once sworn off street food after an experience in Zanzibar, I hesitated. But seeing my fellow travelers — three Japanese expats living in Chennai — eagerly dig in, I decided to take the plunge. The flavors were bold, rich and unforgettable, just like Jaipur itself.

Reflections on Jaipur
This wasn’t just a bike tour; it was an invitation into the daily life of Jaipur’s residents. Every turn introduced me to something deeply rooted in tradition yet vibrantly alive in the present. The Amber Fort, with its grandeur and sweeping views, left me in awe. The city’s markets were a feast for the senses. And my time at the Holiday Inn Jaipur City Centre gave me the perfect balance of comfort and convenience, allowing me to dive into the city’s energy while having a welcoming retreat at the end of the day.
Jaipur is not a city you simply visit — it’s a city you experience. And every moment, from sunrise to sunset, is an opportunity to immerse yourself in its magic.
