10 essential travel tips for beginners

1. Plan ahead

Get to know your destination. What regions or cities do you want to see? How will you get there and how will you travel once you’re there? Do your research to get an understanding of the local culture so you can ensure you remain culturally competent during your trip. If the locals speak a different language than you, learn a few key phrases. Lastly, understand the seasonality of your destination. High season usually means the best weather but more crowds and higher prices. During shoulder seasons you can usually expect less crowds and lower prices.

2. Budget Appropriately

Budgeting helps travelers estimate expenses, prioritize spending and avoid overspending, thus allowing for a more enjoyable and stress-free experience. By setting a budget, you can make informed decisions, maximize your resources and potentially uncover opportunities to save money or redirect funds towards activities that enhance your experience.

3. Get your ducks in a row

If you remember any of these travel tips for beginners, please let it be this one! Get your travel documents ready such as passports and visas if traveling internationally. You will want to check entry requirements for your destination to see what forms need filled out ahead of time. Ensure you check your passport expiration date, some countries require your passport to be valid for six months after your trip. Additionally, check the currency exchange rate and exchange some money ahead of time so you arrive with the appropriate cash. Lastly, make sure to notify your bank of your trip so you can use your credit or debit cards (also make sure there are no foreign transaction fees!).

4. Sort out your tech

In order to stay connected and have access in case of emergencies, you need to figure out how you will use your phone. If your phone is unlocked, you may be able to purchase a local SIM card and have access to data. If not, you may only be able to use your phone on Wi-Fi. Be sure to check with your phone carrier as some plans offer free international data. Depending on the type of trip you are taking, you may have some long days. In this case, having a USB rechargeable battery on hand may be useful. Look up the type of electrical sockets used at your destination, as you may need to purchase adapters for your electronics to work. Lastly, download WhatsApp to be able to communicate with family and friends back home.

5. Pack right

You should purchase good quality luggage to ensure you don’t lose a wheel or break a zipper during your trip. Some people also prefer to purchase a travel backpack for easy and comfortable access to their things. Make sure to not overpack, utilizing packing cubes can help with this. You don’t want to be lugging a heavy suitcase across cobblestone streets or on and off train cars!

6. Prioritize health and safety

Stay vigilant by keeping your belongings secure at all times to deter potential thieves. Use anti-theft accessories like money belts or slash-resistant bags, and avoid displaying valuable items in public. Don’t wear your backpack on your back on trains, place it securely on your lap in front of you. For an extra layer of protection, you may consider purchasing travel insurance. Travel insurance provides peace of mind and financial protection against unforeseen circumstances such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies or lost luggage. In the event of unexpected incidents, travel insurance can help mitigate financial losses and ensure you receive assistance and support wherever you are in the world.

7. Immerse yourself in the local culture

Immerse yourself in the culture by engaging with locals, trying authentic cuisine, taking a cooking class and participating in cultural activities or festivals. Embrace curiosity, respect local customs and be open to new experiences for a truly enriching and memorable travel experience.

8. Share your itinerary with someone you trust

Before embarking on your journey, send your itinerary to a trusted friend or family member. In case of emergencies, this ensures someone knows your whereabouts and can provide assistance if needed. Additionally, regularly updating them on any changes to your plans can offer peace of mind for both you and your loved ones.

9. Live in the moment

In today’s world, we all need a reminder that it’s okay to put your phone away. Put away distractions like phones and cameras occasionally to fully immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and sensations around you. Just relax and enjoy your trip. Don’t worry about getting the perfect photo for Instagram or documenting every moment on TikTok.
