The Jewel of Lake Pichola: Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur
Curator’s statement

After eloping in India, my husband and I wanted somewhere special to soak it all in — and honestly, I don’t think we could have picked a more magical place than Taj Lake Palace, a destination in and of itself.

First, the setting. Because it is floating in the middle of Lake Pichola, a boat ride is required to reach the property, and that alone makes it feel ridiculously romantic. The moment we stepped onto the white marble dock, we were greeted with rose petals, traditional music and this stunning view of the lake stretching out in every direction. It really felt like something out of a dream.

Built in the 1700s as a royal retreat, it still feels like something from another era — intricate archways, courtyards with fountains, hand-painted frescoes and these peaceful little terraces that overlook the water. At night, the entire place is softly lit and reflects on the lake. The inner courtyard has a beautiful lily pond, where you can sit and take in the atmosphere, and long marble corridors with stunning views in every direction.

We stayed in one of the lake-facing rooms. The rooms are elegant but cozy, with antique furniture and colorful Rajasthani textiles. Everything felt so personal — our room had fresh flowers, chocolates and a handwritten note waiting for us.

At sunset, we set out on a private boat ride around Lake Pichola, and honestly, this was one of my absolute favorite moments. The scenic cruise around the lake offers a unique perspective and views of the City Palace, Jag Mandir and lakeside havelis — and a pretty gorgeous cotton candy sunset.

Before dinner, there’s an incredible dance show that happens in one of the courtyards where you can enjoy a little aperitivo. The restaurant provides a gorgeous dinner set up in these little coves that feel romantic and have perfect views of the lake. The food was incredible (we went all-in on Rajasthani dishes), but honestly, the atmosphere made it unforgettable.

During the day, the pool area became our favorite spot. It’s this serene little hideaway, surrounded by marble columns and bougainvillea, the perfect place to unwind and take in the beauty of the palace.

Even though the palace feels like it’s in its own world, it’s actually super easy to explore Udaipur. The hotel has a private boat that takes you back to the city, and from there, you can wander through the old town, visit City Palace, shop for colorful textiles and antiques or stop for chai at a rooftop café with a view of the lake. Udaipur is such a unique place, and staying at Taj Lake Palace made it feel even more special.

This is one of those hotels that completely transports you. Whether you’re celebrating something big (like we were) or just want to experience something truly unique, this is the kind of place that stays with you forever.
