9-Day NCL Getaway Cruise to Türkiye & Greece
Curator’s statement

Our group of 16 traveled in early September, and it turned out to be a fantastic time for weather at our ports of call! We loved enjoying the quieter ship activities, and since school was back in session, there were very few kids on board. It made for a really relaxing experience! On board, we were able to participate in several of the evening activities and even found a music duo we could follow nightly. The Norwegian Getaway was a top choice for our group seeking a mix of relaxation, adventure and entertainment.

I definitely recommend flying in the day before; remember when booking a flight, or using NCL for your flights, you lose a day with travel. This is important to be able to enjoy your first day on the ship.

It tends to be cool on the ship and decks in the evening hours. Bring a light cardigan/sweatshirt/jacket to thoroughly enjoy the atmosphere and views. The ports of call are warm locations with cobblestone walkways and uneven paths.

The ship: The Norwegian Getaway is an excellent choice for group travel, offering versatile spaces and activities to suit all interests. Its wide range of dining options includes group-friendly venues like Taste and Savor for casual dining, or specialty restaurants for unique group dining experiences.

Entertainment options like Broadway-style shows and comedy clubs can accommodate large groups, ensuring everyone has fun. The ship also has meeting rooms and event spaces that can be reserved for private group functions, making it ideal for corporate retreats, family reunions or special events. They even accommodated our group for a 2:30am American football watch party.

There are so many dining options allowing groups to experience shared meals, from steakhouses to international buffets. Specialty restaurants even accommodate large reservations, we were able to get all 16 at 2 tables, twice during the trip.

Itinerary & Review: Norwegian Cruise Line Getaway – Istanbul & Greece

Day 1: Pre-Cruise in Athens

Acropolis & Parthenon: I took in the panoramic views of Athens, feeling on top of the world before descending to explore the charming Plaka Neighborhood. There, I indulged in quintessential Greek delights, savoring rich Greek coffee, delicious souvlaki and an array of savory pastries. I also treated myself to traditional sweet treats, each bite a reminder of the vibrant flavors of Greece.

Day 2: Thessaloniki

Umbrellas: A unique art display on the waterfront.

Skyline Tower: I had the chance to visit the newly-renovated SKYLINE Bar, located in the heart of the city on the top floor of the OTE Tower. As I settled in, I was treated to a gradual rotation of the tower that lasted 60 minutes, allowing me to take in the stunning sights of Thessaloniki. It was an impressively unusual experience, giving me a view of every corner of one of Europe’s oldest and most multicultural cities.

Ancient walls from above in ruins.
A view of shoreline with people walking and large windmills in the background.

The environment was uniquely designed, with elegant décor that perfectly complemented the amazing panoramic views of the city’s main attractions. I had a choice between a wine glass with a fruit platter featuring a variety of cheeses and cold cuts, paired with dried fruit, OR a classic club sandwich served with a choice of beer or a refreshing drink. I opted for the club sandwich, with its layers of ham, cheese, mayonnaise, ketchup, tomato and lettuce, all accompanied by crispy French fries. The entire experience was unforgettable, filled with delicious flavors and breathtaking views.

Day 3: Istanbul, Turkey

Hagia Sophia: My visit would not have been complete without a stop at the awe-inspiring Hagia Sophia. As I stood before it, I marveled at the seamless blend of Christian and Islamic influences in its architecture and the stunning interior mosaics. Originally built in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian, this architectural marvel had played a pivotal role in both Christian and Islamic history. I was captivated by the massive dome that seemed to float above me, and I couldn't help but admire the intricate calligraphy that adorned the walls, a testament to the rich cultural heritage that the Hagia Sophia represents.

Blue Mosque: I explored the majestic Blue Mosque, a masterpiece of 17th-century architecture commissioned by Sultan Ahmet I. As I stepped inside, I marveled at the intricate design, adorned with 27,000 pieces of Iznik tiles that earned it the nickname "Blue Mosque." The soft glow of the sunlight filtering through the stained glass windows created a serene atmosphere, and I couldn’t help but admire the stunning calligraphic inscriptions that decorated the walls. The vast courtyard, with its beautiful fountain at the center, offered a peaceful retreat, making my visit to this architectural gem truly unforgettable.

Grand Bazaar: I toured the bustling Grand Bazaar, the oldest and largest covered market in the world. As I wandered through its labyrinthine streets, I lost myself among the over 4,000 shops that offered a dazzling array of goods, from fragrant spices to vibrant textiles. The vibrant colors and enticing aromas surrounded me, creating an unforgettable sensory experience. I was captivated by the intricate patterns of the carpets and the dazzling jewelry displays, and I couldn’t resist stopping to sample some local sweets. The energy of the market was infectious, with vendors calling out and bargaining adding to the lively atmosphere. It was a true immersion into the heart of Istanbul’s culture.

Day 4: Continued in Istanbul

I discovered the sights and history of Istanbul from the water on a cruise down the Bosphorus. Relaxing on a modern luxury yacht, I enjoyed the elegant ambiance and the stunning panoramic views of both the Asian and European sides of the city, beautifully lit at night. As we passed under the two iconic Bosphorus bridges connecting Europe and Asia, I marveled at the sights, including Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque, and the charming neighborhoods of Ortakoy and Bebek.

I snapped photos of the city skyline while my guide shared fascinating stories about the rich confluence of cultures at this unique meeting point. I admired the impressive walls of the medieval Rumeli Fortress, feeling a sense of history wash over me.

This 2.5-hour yacht cruise was a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, offering a luxurious experience as I took in the beauty of Istanbul from a different perspective. The cruise allowed me to appreciate the city's peculiarities and charm in a way that I'll always remember.

Day 5: Kusadasi

First, I visited the House of the Virgin Mary, a significant pilgrimage site for Christians. Standing in the place where she is believed to have spent her final years, I felt a profound sense of peace. It was moving to see the gifts left by popes during their visits, a testament to the deep reverence held for this site. Each moment in Ephesus felt like stepping back in time, connecting me to the rich history that surrounded me.

I explored the ancient city of Ephesus, one of the best-preserved Greco-Roman sites in the world. Walking through its historic streets, I marveled at iconic landmarks like the Odeon, the impressive Domitian Temple and the grand Celsus Library, which stood majestically against the sun. The Amphitheater, with its remarkable acoustics, left me in awe, and I couldn’t help but imagine the events that took place there.

Finally, I ventured into the Terrace Houses, where the affluent of Ephesus once lived. I was captivated by the intricately adorned interiors, filled with stunning mosaics and frescoes that revealed the opulence of Roman life. Although the steps made it a bit challenging, the beauty of the artwork made it well worth the effort.

Day 6: Mykonos, Greece

During my visit to Mykonos, I was instantly drawn in by the island's lively atmosphere. One of my favorite sights was the famous Windmills of Kato Mili standing proudly against the blue sky. I spent a lot of time wandering around them, enjoying their beauty and the amazing views of the town below.

The marina was another highlight of my trip. The colorful old boats gently swaying in the water created a picture-perfect scene that looked like it belonged on a postcard. I loved taking photos of the boats, each one with its own unique story.

When it came to food, Mykonos was incredible. I got to try a variety of delicious dishes, from fresh seafood to traditional Greek mezes. Every meal was a treat, bursting with flavors that I couldn’t get enough of. Eating outdoors, surrounded by the lively streets, made the experience even better.

The island was filled with energy. The cheerful atmosphere, full of laughter and music, made me feel alive. I strolled through the charming narrow streets, checking out the shops and soaking in the island's special vibe. Mykonos left a lasting impression on me — a perfect mix of beauty, culture and delicious food that I will always remember.

Day 7: Rhodes, Greece spent on the water

We set sail from Mandraki Harbor, excited to explore the East Coast beaches of Rhodes on a six-hour cruise.

Our first stop was Anthony Quinn Bay, where the stunning views took my breath away. I dove into the crystal-clear waters, snorkeling and exploring the area. The vibrant marine life was enchanting.

We then made our way to Ladiko Bay, a small, tranquil spot with shallow waters that sparkled under the sun. It felt like a hidden paradise, and I appreciated the calmness of the sea.

Our final destination was Kalithea Bay, one of the most famous places on the island. I visited the Cave of Kalithea, and although the experience was challenging, it was unforgettable, filled with the rich history and beauty of the area.

The crew prepared homemade Mediterranean cuisine and fresh fruits with such care, making the entire experience even more delightful. It was a day filled with relaxation, exploration and the stunning beauty of Rhodes.

Day 8: Crete (Heraklion), Greece

My husband had the chance to play at a unique golf course in Crete that truly stands out. The course was carefully designed to fit into the beautiful Cretan landscape, featuring a mountainous layout with each hole sculpted to blend seamlessly with the surroundings.

The architects really focused on protecting the environment, incorporating eco-friendly features like modern water treatment systems and large untouched areas. This made him appreciate the course even more.

Playing there tested every part of his golfing skills, the 11th hole offered breathtaking views of the Lasithi Mountains and the stunning Cretan countryside, creating a sense of freedom and tranquility that was unforgettable.

To add to the experience, there was on-course food and beverage service, allowing them to order cool drinks and snacks during the game.

Even in the summer heat, a gentle breeze from the mountains made for a perfect round of golf.

Day 9: Santorini, Greece

During my visit to Santorini, I was completely enchanted by the island's breathtaking beauty. Oia's stunning whitewashed buildings and brilliant colors that seemed to glow in the sunlight. I loved wandering through its charming streets, taking in the incredible views of the deep blue sea.

One of my adventures included hiking the donkey path. As I made my way down, I enjoyed the unique experience of sharing the path with the local donkeys, all while taking in the picturesque scenery around me.

A bucket list moment came when I booked a flying dress photo shoot. It felt surreal to twirl in a flowing dress against the stunning backdrop of Santorini’s iconic landscape. The photos turned out to be incredible, capturing the magic of the island perfectly.

I also took the time to explore the local beaches and food shops in the flats. The beaches offered a relaxing escape. I found charming food shops where I indulged in fresh Greek salads, delicious gyros and sweet pastries. Each bite was a testament to the island’s rich culinary culture.

Overall, my trip to Santorini was a dream come true. The combination of stunning views, unique experiences and delicious food made it an unforgettable adventure that I will always treasure.
