Sustainable Red Sea Escape at La Maison Bleue in El Gouna, Egypt
Curator’s statement

I recently spent two weeks in Egypt, a country I had been dying to visit for many years! I started the trip in Cairo and slowly worked my way down the country, ending my trip on a high note with a weekend stay in the coastal city of El Gouna. My two-night stay at La Maison Bleue was nothing short of magic. This blue-washed luxury guesthouse was idyllic, tranquil and romantic — I cannot wait to return!

La Maison Bleue is the perfect add-on to any Egypt itinerary. I hate to call it an add-on as it’s a destination in and of itself. But for those looking to get their ocean fix after some time in the desert, it really makes the most perfect stop! Situated along the shores of the Red Sea, El Gouna is known for its glistening lagoons, laid-back community, luxurious properties, water sports and delicious Mediterranean food.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by the assistant front desk manager, Beshoy, who I have to say made our trip so special. “Would you like a glass of sparkling wine, or maybe some ginger ale?” he asked. We had just made a seven-hour-long car journey from Awsan to El Gouna, so a ginger ale sounded great. I expected to be handed a can of Canada Dry or Schweppes, but to my surprise I was brought a gorgeous bright yellow mocktail, topped with an edible flower. Their ginger ale is made in-house with fruits, herbs and vegetables from their greenhouse — as are all of their cocktails and many of the items found on their restaurant’s menu. Off to an impressive start for someone like myself who appreciates special touches, and a sustainable approach to both food and travel.

The adult-only hotel is comprised of 13 opulent and very generously sized suites. Our well-appointed room — finessed with a large living room, walk-in closet, a bathroom the size of most living rooms and a balcony overlooking the ocean, far exceeded my expectations.

Throughout the hotel are antiques and period pieces collected from Europe and Northern Africa. The lobby is decorated with beautiful Minoan murals. There is a large formal sitting room where guests can read, enjoy their morning coffee or simply take in all of the unique pieces scattered throughout the room.

Outside, you’ll find bright pink and white bougainvillea creeping up the facade, a heated and marble-lined pool and a cocktail bar so that you can enjoy your poolside lunch with a cocktail in hand. Off to the side, you’ll find the spa, which is equipped with a Turkish bath, steam room, sauna and plunge pool — all of which are complimentary with your stay. You can also book a massage or spa treatment in one of their two treatment rooms. If you’re more of the adventurous type, El Gouna is known for their water sports. On a breezy day, you’ll see plenty of kite-surfers from your balcony!

When it’s time for dinner, enjoy a traditional Egyptian spread at the hotel’s restaurant. As mentioned earlier, La Maison Bleue prides itself on sustainable practices. Any food which is not grown in their own greenhouse is sourced locally and sustainably, which helps protect the surroundings and supports the community. This is a place you can not only enjoy an incredible vacation at, but also one you can feel great about supporting.
