Curator’s statement
I had the immense pleasure of visiting the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort in Savusavu, located on Vanua Levu in Fiji. This shoreside eco-retreat is overseen by the son of legendary scuba pioneer Jacques Cousteau. It's a haven for underwater enthusiasts and eco-conscious travelers. With a resident marine biologist on staff, the resort offers a deep connection to the ocean and its wonders. It’s a perfect destination for families and couples alike, providing a homey, welcoming atmosphere.

Location
The resort is perched on the tip of Fiji’s second-largest island, Vanua Levu, near the quaint seaside town of Savusavu. It offers breathtaking views of the bay and direct access to exceptional snorkeling and diving spots. Guests can reach the resort via a flight from Nadi to Savusavu, followed by a short, 20-minute drive to the property, where staff will warmly welcome you.
Vibe and crowd
Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort is family-oriented, offering free nannies for children up to five years old. Children aged six to 12 enjoy group activities led by a ‘buddy.’ Teenagers can engage in eco-programs designed to inspire a connection with nature and Fijian culture. Programs include waterfall safaris, hobie catamaran sailing, night snorkeling, coral planting and storytelling, blending adventure with education. These experiences help foster a deep appreciation for the environment and local traditions, making the resort a unique and enriching destination for young travelers.
Rooms
The resort features 25 bures (traditional Fijian bungalows), including eight oceanfront options, as well as a private villa. The bures combine tropical elegance with modern amenities, such as air conditioning, spacious bathrooms, daybeds, closets and desks. Ideal for couples or families with young children, these accommodations offer stunning ocean views and a tranquil escape in the heart of Fiji.
Dining
All meals are included and served at the poolside restaurant, where guests can choose between the sophisticated main restaurant and bar or the relaxed family restaurant. Children’s meals are prepared in advance and can be enjoyed at the family restaurant or Bula Club, with nannies nearby to allow parents some time to themselves. The resort emphasizes fresh, local produce grown on its 17-acre property, offering a culinary experience that reflects Fiji’s vibrant culture. For an even more personalized dining experience, guests can opt for private meals on the pier, beachside, poolside or even on a private island.
Amenities
The resort boasts several swimming pools — one reserved for adults, which is open to families on Sundays. Free activities include snorkeling, paddleboarding, kayaking, hiking, an escape to the private island of Naviavia and cultural experiences, such as exploring local villages, visiting a cacao farm, a pearl farm. The on-site PADI dive center offers diving experiences ranging from single dives to full certification courses.
For a truly rejuvenating experience, the beachfront spa bure provides treatments inspired by traditional Fijian practices, using natural ingredients like cold-pressed coconut oil, raw sugar, spices and local nuts. These treatments are designed to restore balance and awaken the senses, offering a deep connection to the natural world.
Sustainability
Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort is deeply committed to sustainability. The resort supports 99 percent local staff, sources ingredients from the island and works to protect the surrounding reefs. Guests can witness coral thriving in the resort’s marine reserve and know that their stay is contributing to the well-being of local communities, healthcare and education. The resort’s dedication to recycling, water conservation and biodiversity ensures that every aspect of the guest experience is rooted in a commitment to preserving Fiji’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
