Expert advice from people who’ve actually been there

Where to stay in Sri Lanka

From stunning train journeys through tea plantations to pristine beaches and historic ruins. This island nation is a dream for travelers seeking unique experiences without breaking the bank. Plus, the exchange rate makes it an incredible value — boutique hotels start around $100 per night, and a delicious dinner for two with drinks can cost as little as $30.

Before embarking on Sri Lanka’s famous Ella to Kandy train ride, I spent two nights in Ella, a small town that quickly won me over. With its lush mountains, waterfalls and lively yet laid-back atmosphere, Ella offers the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure.

Despite its reputation as a backpacker hub, Ella caters to all kinds of travelers. The town is dotted with charming boutiques, great restaurants and cozy cafés. Café One Love became my favorite dining spot, serving delicious food in a reggae-inspired setting.

I stayed at The Cubes Ella, a wonderful three-star hotel that exceeded all expectations. The hospitality was outstanding — my host ensured every detail of my stay was seamless, from made-to-order breakfasts to arranging tuk-tuk rides around town.

The Ella to Kandy Train Ride: Sri Lanka’s most iconic train journey absolutely lives up to the hype. If you’ve seen those Instagram shots of travelers leaning out of open train doors, you already know the views are breathtaking. Rolling tea plantations, misty mountains and charming villages unfold outside your window.

Essential tips for the train ride

  • Book your tickets in advance: I booked my tickets thirty days prior to departure to secure my reserved seat, avoiding the long lines and confusion at the station.

  • Reconsider leaning out of the train: Yes, everyone does it, but on a rainy day like mine, it became clear how risky it could be. Enjoy the views safely!

  • Break up the journey: Instead of the full seven-hour ride, I opted to stop overnight in Nuwara Eliya, also known as “Little England.”

A night at The Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya

My overnight stay in Nuwara Eliya was a highlight of the trip. I checked into The Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya - Heritage Hotel, a stunning colonial-era property with exceptional service and timeless elegance. Nestled in Sri Lanka’s picturesque tea country, it’s the perfect place to unwind, sip on world-class Ceylon tea and soak in the charm of this historic hill town. The cool climate, beautiful gardens and refined atmosphere made it an unforgettable stop along my journey.

What else makes Sri Lanka special?

Beaches & surf towns: For a laid-back, bohemian vibe, head to Sri Lanka’s southern coast. I spent time in Galle, a historic fort city with a stunning coastline, and ended my day watching the sunset over the Indian Ocean. This region is perfect for surfing, whale watching and adventure sports.

Ancient ruins & palaces: History lovers will be amazed by Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage. From the ancient city of Polonnaruwa to the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress, this country offers incredible historical sites. While I didn’t make it to this region on my first visit, I’m already planning a return trip to experience it firsthand.

Adventure meets affordability: Sri Lanka is a rare destination where stunning landscapes, rich history and warm hospitality come together at an unbeatable value. Whether you’re drawn to scenic train rides, pristine beaches or ancient ruins, this country has something for everyone.

Need to know

Sri Lanka has a unique weather pattern. When the south and west coasts are ideal for visiting, the eastern and northern regions experience monsoonal moisture. Then it flips! Consider the time of year when planning a trip.
