ESCAPE TO THE FRENCH RIVIERA!
Curator’s statement

In the summer of 2023, I embarked on my journey to France. This time it won't just be for a day but for an entire week, well, actually for nine days and eight nights. I wanted the charming and quaint Parisian style experience but also the vibrant and sunny inspired South of France (also known as the French Riviera). For this report, I will focus on my time in the south, the hotel I stayed in, my stand-out restaurant and the day trip options that are a train away.

For my time on the French Riviera, my base was in its largest city, Nice. I desired somewhere close to the beach and the old town, and of course, central, so that I could explore more on foot. The Deck Hotel by Happy Culture was my choice. This hotel is 500 ft from the Promenade des Anglais and the beach, which is approximately five minutes or less. Provided with a four-star rating, I would agree that the service and thoughtful level of amenities would justify such. From the first moment that I walked through the sliding doors of the property, I was met with a fresh, clean, breezy aroma and hanging canopies from the ceiling. I would then take the elevator to a higher floor to meet the front desk. While in that process, I encountered the beautiful and cheerful artistry of this boutique hotel.

Once I arrived at the front desk, I was met with a smile, and the faces of some of the workers that I saw in a painting below. This showed me that they value a family-type culture and believe in the importance of their staff. My sister and I stayed in one of the larger rooms, Premium double twin, because we wanted more space. Generally, in France, the rooms tend to be on the smaller size compared to other regions, but with so much to see and do, I didn't spend much time there. The Deck Hotel provides a beachy, relaxed vibe with relaxed accommodations. I found the beds to be very comfortable and the bathrooms to be modern and very well-kept with all that you need and more. I especially utilized the electric, drying hanger for my wet items.

Now moving on to my favorite part of the hotel, the lounge and patio area. I absolutely loved it here and spent much of time after returning from an adventure. The hotel provides complimentary water that is filtered and accessible all day. There was a grand coffee machine that could create many varieties. This was surely a treat for me, and besides each of these stations, there would be clean glasses that would invite you to help yourself. Additionally, there were tables and comfortable seating in this area, and you could go outside on the patio, where you will find some loveseats and experience the cool breeze and joy of a "happy culture".

Lastly, the staff was very helpful in assisting me with directions to nearby sights and restaurants. They were an integral part in providing us with ease to the various cities of the French Riviera: Menton, Eve and Monaco. I wish I got a chance to visit Grasse, but that will be for another time. And oh, yes, I would definitely recommend a bicycle tour of Old Nice on your first or second day in the city, or a food tour by Team No Diet Club (IG: @no_Diet_club). All were fantastic with a great opportunity to see the city with locals.

The Deck offers thoughtful amenities at a great price. Perfect for solo travels, young couples and a small family. If you like to walk around to the various shops and restaurants, visit multiple cities, and experience a beautiful promenade by the sea, this is for you. Enjoy!

Need to know

The Deck Hotel recommended the Garden Cafe Nice for brunch, and I am so glad that they did. I love brunch and this restaurant stood out the most for me, but go early because the lines will be long. They are all about natural and healthy. Everything was super fresh, beautifully plated with larger than expected portions. I especially loved the freshly squeezed orange juice, wholesome pancakes and rich salads.

I would recommend Menton, for a vibrant old town filled with limoncello from the lemons of Menton and scrumptious desserts. There is also a small idyllic beach with colorful buildings in the background, looked over by the 'Basilique St. Miche Archangel". This city is the closest to Italy and will have many pizza variations with a French twist. It was a surreal escape, and definitely a favorite. Furthermore, to continue with old towns, if you love historic sites, also visit the Medieval village of Eze. I felt that I was transported in time to an era of stone buildings, partially covered with green shrubs and perched on the hills overlooking the far sea. It was something out of a fairytale. And to end, while you are there, enjoy great French perfumery at the shops of Fragonard.

For a more extravagant area, filled with glitz, glamor and expensive cars, head over to Monaco. You will also experience beautiful sunsets over the marina and partake in a game at the Casino de Monte Carlo. All are an intercity train ride away!

At night, to decompress, cross over from the promenade and sit on the beach. I remember staying there in the quiet, appreciating this moment in time. Since this beach has mostly medium-sized pebbles, I was able to throw them into the moonlight ocean as I sat by. You will see the locals bring pizza to enjoy by the beach, but I would also add a baguette and a bottle of wine. It doesn't take much to experience beautiful moments in France. There are many opportunities to do simple things that will bring cheer to your heart.
