Europe is a bastion of culture and history, culinary prowess and natural beauty that parents and children alike can enjoy. We asked over a dozen Fora travel experts for their recommendations for the best family trips to Europe. From destinations across the Mediterranean to those high in the Alps, here are their picks
Lisbon and the Algarve, Portugal
Destinations in Portugal don’t have the same kind of name recognition as those in nearby Spain or Italy, but they’re just as fascinating to explore. Portugal’s underrated nature is an advantage, too: There are fewer crowds to contend with, which is always helpful when you’re visiting a new place with children.
“Portugal is one of my favorite destinations for families,” Fora Advisor Wonnie Baik said. “It's compact enough that you can easily explore different regions without spending hours on the road, making it perfect for kids who might not love long travel days.”
Pairing a trip to Lisbon, Portugal’s capital, and the Algarve, the country’s covetable southern coastline, allows you to get a mix of urban excitement and relaxation in a natural setting. Many of the best hotels in Lisbon cater to families, and the journey from Lisbon to the Algarve is easily made by train, car or even bus.
“Lisbon is a walkable city filled with color and unique experiences — tram rides, tile-painting workshops and iconic landmarks like the Belém Tower,” Wonnie said. “The Time Out Market is a must-visit for families with its variety of food stalls offering something for everyone, even the pickiest of eaters.”
After spending time in the capital, set your sights on the coast: “I love the Algarve for families!” Fora X Advisor Lindsay Richter said. “There are a ton of family-friendly resorts and so much to do in terms of activities, whether you are a family that likes to be active or one that likes to relax and enjoy the beach or the pool.”
Lindsay added that Viceroy at Ombria, one of the best hotels in the Algarve, is an excellent choice if your family is visiting Europe in summer.
Fora Perks at Viceroy at Ombria Algarve include a $100 hotel credit, complimentary wine tasting, daily breakfast, an upgrade and extended check-in/out whenever possible.
Rome, Italy
Rome tops many lists of the best places to visit in Italy for first-timers, especially families. The city is filled with relics from the Roman Empire to the Neoclassical era. The city breathes life into what children have learned in school. In addition to its history, Rome is brimming with culture, gastronomy and attractions.
“Rome offers lots of sites and energy to keep everyone busy,” Fora X Advisor Amy Green said. “This is an easy destination to get to, and has lots for families to do at an arm’s length — such as the Colosseum, Roman Forum, the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Baths…”
Amy noted that it’s easy to travel to other major cities in Italy by train, which can be particularly fun for young ones who may’ve never experienced train travel before.
“And no one can get tired of eating pizza and gelato!” Fora Advisor Patricia Caruso said.
Andalusia, Spain
Andalusia encompasses many destinations that you would find on a Spain bucket list: Seville, Granada, Córdoba, Ronda, Cádiz. The list is lengthy, and each of these cities offers something unique in terms of architecture, local culture and gastronomy. Your family can enjoy hands-on cultural experiences such as flamenco dancing or traditional Andalusian cooking classes. The Andalusian countryside and beaches — especially along the Costa del Sol — are a breath of fresh air where you can swim, hike or simply enjoy the scenery. Compared to Barcelona and Madrid, fewer travelers visit the region, which has cultivated a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
“Andalusia is very family-friendly, with wonderful beach resorts and tons of culture,” Fora X Advisor Amanda Bates said. “It’s very walkable and easy for strollers, with long sandy beaches, biking and many other family-friendly activities.”
Greece
The Greek Islands offer variety, comfortable weather from spring to fall and a breezy Mediterranean backdrop. The best Greek islands for families include Crete and Santorini if you want a mix of adventure and relaxation. There are ancient ruins to explore, clear and shallow beaches, plenty of options for shopping and dining plus a wealth of outdoorsy activities from water sports to ATV tours. If you prefer a laid-back trip, don’t discount lesser-known islands like Corfu, Naxos and Paros, all of which offer an authentic snapshot of Greek culture — and there are dozens more, most of which feature family-friendly hotels and resorts.
“The Greek-owned Grecotel brand is well loved for their family-focused properties,” Fora Advisor Chloe Kletsa said. “With locations from Corfu to the Peloponnese, Mykonos and Crete, the brand offers different levels of luxury to suit all travelers and most budgets.”
The luxurious Grecotel Corfu Imperial, for example, hosts a supervised kids club so parents can enjoy world-class spa treatments and other adult-oriented amenities. Families can also unwind on the beach, enjoy family movie nights and more.
If this is your first time in Greece, pairing a trip to the Greek Islands with a couple nights on the mainland broadens the experience. Athens and Thessaloniki are both exciting, cosmopolitan destinations with an array of activities, architecture and excellent dining. Or you can simply relax as a high-end resort on the mainland: “Costa Navarino is a locals’ fave, as it offers everything from a newly launched branch of the famous Mouratoglou tennis academy and an extensive golf course to a long sandy beach and nightly entertainment options,” Chloe said of the Peloponnesian region.
Fora Reserve perks at Grecotel Corfu Imperial include a 25-minute spa treatment per person, welcome amenities, complimentary roundtrip transfers to and from Mykonos Port / Airport, an upgrade and extended check-in/out whenever possible.
Fora Perks at The Romanos, A Luxury Collection Resort, Costa Navarino include a $100 food and beverage credit, daily breakfast, an upgrade and extended check-in/out whenever possible.
London, England
There are so many things to do in London for families. Harry Potter fans can tour Warner Brothers Studios, where props and behind-the-scenes exhibits await. History enthusiasts will love the city’s many historic landmarks, and worldly explorers will delight in the trendy shops and indie markets. London is also home to some of the world’s most prestigious museums, including The Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Gallery and The British Museum.
The UK has a solid transportation system, too; you can easily visit other cities on the island.
“Take the train to Edinburgh and go to the zoo to see the Walk of the Penguins,” Fora Advisor Kelly Laipply recommended. “The penguins are let out of their habit every day and walk in a line around the zoo! It's adorable!”
Even better, there are hotels in London for every budget and need.
Croatia
Croatia is underrated as far as family-friendly trips to Europe go. Its stunning Adriatic coastline is dotted with calm, shallow beaches perfect for young ones, while older children can enjoy things like snorkeling, paddleboarding and boat excursions to nearby islands. Croatia’s national parks, such as Plitvice Lakes and Krka, feature waterfalls and hiking trails. The country’s historic cities, like Dubrovnik and Split, allow you to explore ancient fortresses and cobblestone streets filled with friendly locals.
“While Dubrovnik is undeniably captivating, its popularity often brings large crowds,” Fora Advisor Karyn Pavich said. “Instead, consider exploring quieter but equally enchanting destinations like Zadar or Stari Grad on Hvar, for a more serene and authentic Croatian experience.”
Karyn highlighted the Maslina Resort in Stari Grad as a “luxurious yet family-friendly retreat.” She noted the resort has an engaging kids’ club, bikes you can take into the historic town — which she said is one of Europe’s oldest towns — and "mesmerizing" sunset views.
Fora Perks at Maslina Resort include a $100 resort credit, daily breakfast, an upgrade and extended check-in/out whenever possible.
Barcelona, Spain
Andalusia isn’t the only Spanish destination worthy of a family trip. Barcelona is one of Europe’s most vibrant culture capitals, and arguably the best place to visit in Spain for first-timers. The city’s beaches, like Barceloneta, are perfect for swimming and playing in the sand, while the nearby Port Vell area features the Aquarium Barcelona, one of Europe’s largest aquariums (don't miss its underwater tunnel). If you have an active family, cycle along the city's many bike-friendly routes. Or take a cable car ride up Montjuïc. Barcelona also boasts lively street performances on La Rambla that may be especially exciting for little ones. (Learn more about exploring Barcelona with kids.)
“Barcelona has something for everyone!” Fora Advisor Patricia Caruso said. “Colorful and whimsical landmarks like Park Güell and Sagrada Familia captivate children and adults. And for rainy days, a visit to the interactive [CosmoCaixa Science Museum] with a rainforest exhibit and hands-on experiments will keep everyone entertained!”
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Amsterdam was once, rather one-dimensionally, regarded as one of Europe’s foremost nightlife destinations. In fact, it’s one of our advisors' top recommendations for a family-friendly European vacation (although it does still have an exciting nightlife).
“Amsterdam is a great city for all ages: It’s friendly, walkable, bikeable and has a great transit system that's easy to use,” Fora Advisor Nadia Schwartz said. “There are lots of wonderful, interactive museums and a great zoo.”
One of the best things to do in Amsterdam is to explore the city’s historic streets from the water. Neighborhoods are sectioned into rings surrounded by scenic canals. Each neighborhood offers a different set of attractions, whether it's shopping on the 9 Streets, enjoying De Wallen’s landmarks or exploring Jordaan’s vendors and eateries.
Family-friendly hotels in Amsterdam include De L'Europe Amsterdam and Pillow Maurits at the Park. The former is a grandiose property doubling as a historical landmark, and the latter is a stylish boutique hotel.
Fora Perks at De L'Europe Amsterdam include a $100 food and beverage credit, daily breakfast, an upgrade and extended check-in/out whenever possible.
Fora Reserve perks at Pillow Maurits at the Park include a €75 credit, a welcome amenity, daily breakfast, an upgrade and extended check-in/out whenever possible.
Paris, France
Paris is hard to leave off any list of the best European trips: “The City of Lights will amaze people of all ages, and a visit to Disneyland will keep the little ones excited for the whole trip!” Fora Advisor Patricia Caruso said.
The city’s many parks and gardens, like the Jardin du Luxembourg and Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, provide open spaces where children can play, enjoy puppet shows or ride vintage carousels. Museums such as the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie offer interactive exhibits, while iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the newly restored Notre Dame spark a sense of wonder. And of course, Paris is one of the world’s most covetable gastronomic destinations. Local pâtisseries tempt with macarons and flaky croissants, while gourmet restaurants offered elevated takes on cuisines from local Parisian and Italian to Californian and Vietnamese.
Fora Advisor Jacqueline de Guzman recommended learning how to bake French delicacies via a cooking class in Le Marais, something your advisor will happily organize.

Ibiza and Valencia, Spain
Ibiza has the reputation of being better suited for a Spain bachelorette party — and yes, the island is one of Europe’s hottest nightlife destinations — but there’s more to the island than beach parties and vibey clubs.
“Most people think of Ibiza as a party destination, which is why I love to recommend it for families because groups who haven't been there often don't think of it,” Fora X Advisor Alicia Anderson said. “Ibiza is a beautiful beach destination that has a lot to offer families, including large villas where you can all stay together. Explore the beach, enjoy cultural experiences for all ages, enjoy great food, water sports, hiking etc. — as long as you avoid the main nightclub area, Ibiza is an excellent option for a family vacation.”
Also worth considering: The city of Valencia on the mainland is one of Ibiza’s main access points — there are ferries that go back and forth — but it’s a family-friendly destination and one of the best places to stay in Spain in its own right. Valencia has a massive museum, arts and entertainment complex called the City of Arts and Sciences, which is specifically geared toward families. It’s home to Europe’s largest aquarium, a concert hall, a natural science museum and more.
Corsica, France
Corsica is a French island in the Mediterranean that tends to fly under the radar given its proximity to other islands and destinations in the region (Monaco, Sicily, the Balearics). But that’s also the island’s allure. It’s not as heavily traveled, but there’s just as much to do for families.
“Corsica blends French and Italian influences with beautiful Mediterranean surroundings,” Fora Advisor Arlette Diederiks said. “The island offers sandy beaches — like Palombaggia or Santa Giulia — vibrant coastal towns and rugged inland mountains, offering adventures ranging from swimming and snorkeling to easygoing hikes.”
Arlette also recommended exploring the island’s natural scenery, as well as immersing yourself in the island’s rich history by exploring Napoleon’s birthplace in Ajaccio or wandering cliffside citadels in Bonifacio.
You can fly directly to Corsica from many major airports in mainland Europe. There are also ferries that connect the island with Marseille, Toulon and Nice. Arlette highlighted Hôtel Casadelmar and La Signoria & Spa as great family resorts.
Fora Perks at Hôtel Casadelmar include a complimentary 50-minute massage for two guests, daily breakfast, an upgrade and extended check-in/out whenever possible.
Fora’s Relais & Châteaux Preferred Partner Program perks at La Signoria & Spa include daily breakfast.
Porto and the Douro River, Portugal
Exploring Porto and the Douro River is an alternative to visiting Lisbon and the Algarve — though traveling from Lisbon to Porto is worthy of consideration. Porto has an architecturally rich historic zone to go along with quiet beaches and its namesake port wine scene, among plenty other things to do. Some cruise lines, like Viking, offer voyages along the Douro River that explore Portugal’s countryside and small towns.
“Porto has a riverfront charm and rich history,” Fora Advisor Wonnie Baik said. “Families can take a boat ride along the Douro River, explore Porto’s narrow streets filled with colorful houses or visit the famous Livraria Lello, a magical bookstore said to have inspired parts of Harry Potter.”
Obviously, children can’t indulge in local wine, but the city also has a thriving gastronomic scene, especially if you’re interested in traditional Portuguese cuisine. Famous dishes include francesinha, a hearty sandwich usually served with a rich beer sauce, and a host of pastries like pastéis de nata, creamy custard tarts with a flaky cinnamon-dusted crust.
Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen offers a blend of historical charm and modern design, with Nyhavn harbor and its colorful houses providing an iconic backdrop.
“Copenhagen is one of the most child-friendly cities in Europe to visit (and I've traveled with my three young children to a lot of them)!” Fora Advisor Liz Laird said. “Copenhagen has excellent museums — and children's areas within the museums — where kids are nearly always free.”
Liz also mentioned the city’s efficient transportation system, Tivoli (a must-visit amusement park in the middle of the city) and easy access to the original Legoland.
If you prefer active travel, Copenhagen has an extensive network of bike paths and a cycle-friendly culture. Enjoy lush parks, such as Frederiksberg Gardens, where picnics, swan boats and shaded trails await.
Liz added, “In the summer, outdoor farmers’ markets pop up all over the city; even the pickiest of eaters will find something they'll like!”
Geneva, Switzerland
Geneva is a great choice for discerning travelers interested in luxe accommodations, dining and experiences. Though Switzerland at large will appeal to travelers of all budgets.
“Switzerland offers everything you need for the ultimate family vacation!” Fora X Advisor Nancy Vuletic said. “Start with its hallmark qualities: safety, cleanliness, efficiency and breathtaking natural beauty.”
In particular, Geneva offers an abundance of activities that cater to families, making it a captivating destination for all ages. The city’s numerous parks provide ample space for children to explore, play and enjoy picnics — or marvel at the Jet d'Eau water fountains, the largest in Europe. Take a leisurely boat ride on Lake Geneva, and take in scenic views while you learn about the region's unique aquatic ecosystem.
“Beyond the iconic hiking trails and world-class ski slopes, families can dive into a wealth of fun-filled activities: Hop aboard charming cogwheel trains and funiculars, race down exhilarating alpine slides or try your hand at yodeling!” Nancy said. “And, of course, no trip to Switzerland would be complete without indulging in its legendary chocolate and cheese — sure to delight kids and adults alike.”
Nancy recommended La Réserve Genève, which offers luxe lakeside villas and suites, as a top-choice for discerning families.
Geneva’s public transportation makes it easy to access nearby attractions like the medieval village of Yvoire. Alternatively, Fora Advisor Jacqueline de Guzman recommended visiting the idyllic town of Gruyeres to enjoy a cheese factory tour before heading to Maison Cailler for the “ultimate chocolate experience from Switzerland's oldest chocolate brand.”
Fora Perks at La Réserve Genève include a $100 resort credit, daily breakfast, an upgrade and extended check-in/out whenever possible.
