Curator’s statement

Attending a Serie A Italian League soccer match is definitely a bucket list event, if you are a European soccer (football) fan. Attending a Serie A Italian League football match is up there with attending a Premier League (EPL), La Liga (Spanish), League One (French), Champions League football game. The atmosphere will be similar. The Italians are as serious about football as any of their British, Spanish, French or European counterparts.

Some people travel for the history and culture. I travel for history, culture and sports.

Whether you are an AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Roma, Lazio or any other Italian League Serisa A team, this is a guide to attending a Serie A Italian League soccer match.

When are Serie A Italian League football matches played?

Serie A matches are typically held on Saturdays and Sundays during the season from September to May. There may be some games played on a weekday, but for the most part they take place during the weekend. There are a total of 38 teams, where each club plays every other team twice, once at home and once away. The matches typically start at 17:30 (5:30 pm) or at 19:45 (7:45 pm).

How should I purchase tickets to a Serie A Italian League football match?

Purchasing a ticket to a Serie A Italian League football match can happen in a few ways.

You can purchase tickets directly from the team. However, tickets are often released two to three weeks before a game. Although tickets to Serie A matches maybe easier to access than other European leagues, there are still no guarantees. If you are planning to go specifically to watch a Serie A Italian League football match, here is where a travel advisor can help. More on that later.

There are 3rd-party sites that offer tickets, however, you need to know if they are authorized, and you are not being overcharged. For big games such as AC Milan vs Inter Milan, there may be a premium.

The 3rd option to purchasing a Serie A Italian League football match ticket is through a travel advisor. A travel advisor can plan a trip for you to see a Serie A Italian League football match. They can also include some history, culture and suggestions for a hotel and lodging to make your trip complete and stress-free. Travel advisors have access to authorized ticket suppliers that make the stress of purchasing tickets less stressful.

The best way in my opinion, is to attend a Serie A Italian League football match is through a hospitality experience. Hospitality often includes a premium seat and pre-match and halftime high-level buffet service with cocktail bar. Hospitality experiences for European matches may seem affordable compared to similar experiences in the US.

What is the most popular Serie A Italian League football teams to attend?

  • AC Milan (Milan) – San Siro - Giuseppe Meazza

  • AS Roma (Rome) – Stadio Olimpico

  • Fiorentina (Florence) – Stadio Artemio Franchi

  • Juventus (Turin) – Allianz Stadium

  • Inter Milan (Milan) - San Siro - Giuseppe Meazza

  • SS Napoli (Naples) – Stadio Diego Armando Maradona

  • Parma (Parma) – Ennio Tardini Stadium

  • Lazio Roma (Rome) – Stadio Olimpico

If you are a fan of USMNT Christian Pulisic - AC Milan would be the way to go.

There are multiple ways to get to the stadiums. For instance, San Siro is about 3.7 miles from the city center. Public transportation is available via subway or bus. Using the suggested routes via a mapping app is advised. San Siro is the last stop on the M5 line.

  • Tips for attending a Serie A Italian League match

  • Outside of each of the stadiums before a game, there will be plenty of things to soak up.

  • Stadium Tours are often a great way to experience. You see the inner workings of a Serie A Italian League stadium. Although most have been renovated, they used to be concrete bowls.

  • There is only one bar on the stadium's grounds, Baretto 1957 Milano. If you want a seat, you should arrive early.

How should I plan my trip to see a Serie A Italian League Match?

Since games will be on a Saturday or Sunday, I would suggest the following schedule:

  • Arrive on a Thursday - Settle in

  • Tour the city (Milan, Rome, Turin, Parma) on Friday – Yes, you are here to watch a game, but while you are here, mind as well see some sights.

  • Saturday – Catch the Serie A Italian League Match or tour depending on when the game is.

  • Sunday – Catch the Serie A Italian League match or tour depending on when the game is.

  • Monday – Return home or continue to tour Italy.

As a fan of football, the best experience if you want to maximize your experience is to attend three games (two Serie A league matches and a Champions League match). It would be possible, for instance if you are in a city like Milan, where they share San Siro. Catch an AC Milan game on Saturday, an Inter Milan game on Sunday, then a Champions League match on the following Tuesday or Wednesday.

One thing I also want to caution foreigners attending matches overseas is who you are rooting for. It is often frowned upon to root for the visiting team when you are overseas. The home fans are very passionate. Do not wear visiting gear clothes. You can still attend if you are a fan of the visiting team. Just do not openly show your appreciation or root for the visiting team. It is about respect for the home team and the game.

Where should I stay when attending a Serie A Italian League match?

It is suggested to stay in the city center for each city so you will have access to tours, restaurants and night life.
