Hikes:

There's a plethora of hiking trails available, catering to various lengths and difficulty levels. Below are some select options we experienced during our trip, including popular and iconic ones. I highly recommend downloading the AllTrails app, a really great tool for discovering hike lengths, difficulty ratings, reviews and more.

  • Koko Crater (Approximately 1,000 staircases): Climb this historic railroad track for epic views of Oahu's southeastern coast. It's a bit of a workout, but the views are totally worth it!

  • Diamond Head (2 miles): Take a hike up this iconic volcano for awesome views of Honolulu and the ocean. Check out the old bunkers along the way!

  • Lanikai Pillbox Hike (1.7 miles): Catch stunning sunrises or sunsets from these old WWII pillboxes overlooking Lanikai Beach.

  • Three Peaks: Scale three rugged peaks for some of the best views of the island.

  • Waimano Falls (3 miles): Trek through lush forests to find this hidden gem of a waterfall.

  • Makapu'u Lighthouse Lookout (5 miles): Walk along the coast to reach this historic lighthouse for amazing ocean views. For a more adventurous experience, venture off-trail to the gorgeous tidepools for a refreshing swim, a path often taken by other hikers.

  • Olomana Hike (varying lengths, typically around four to five miles round trip): Difficult hike, but a good one.

  • Waikiki (South): Although heavily tourist-oriented, is a must-visit spot. Consider renting surfboards for the family and enjoying the effortlessly enjoyable longboard waves.

  • Sandys (South) or Sandy Beach Park: A beloved local destination renowned for its powerful shore break. It offers an exhilarating experience for those brave enough to take a dip, but caution is advised due to the strong currents.

  • Waimanalo Beach (East): Known for its golden sands and azure waters. Grab a bite at Ono Steaks and Shrimp Shack! Park in the beach lot, securing valuables in the trunk. This spot exudes Hawaiian charm.

  • Kailua Beach Park (East): Hang loose on this picture-perfect beach with swaying palm trees and gentle waves. If you go down one of the accesses off North Kalaheo there is a small fun shore break to play in.

  • Lanikai Beach (East): Discover paradise on the shores of Lanikai, with its soft sand and calm waters. There are also some cute shops nearby to explore. You can also kayak out to the two islands which are cool to check out as well.

  • Bellows Beach (East): Escape the crowds and enjoy some peace and quiet on this lesser-known beach.

  • Makapu'u Beach (East): Akin to Sandy's, offering exhilarating shore breaks and providing an excellent vantage point for wave watching.

  • China Man's Hat (East): Also known as Kualoa Beach Park, this is a stunning destination worth exploring. You can swim out to the iconic China Man's Hat island and leisurely circumnavigate its petite shores.
