Curator’s statement
I first visited Isla Mujeres in 2021, and it instantly captured my heart! Isla has a romantic atmosphere, serene beauty and the most stunning, calm, turquoise waters along secluded beaches. This island offers the perfect escape for couples and travelers seeking a peaceful and relaxing getaway. I’m excited to share my love for this hidden gem and help you discover the magic of Mexico's Secret Caribbean Island.
After landing at the Cancn International Airport, take a private transfer (many hotels help), shared shuttle, taxi, or rental car to the Puerto Juárez ferry terminal. It is about 30-40 minutes away. From there, board the Ultramar Ferry, which departs every 30 minutes, with a scenic 15–20 minute ride across the Caribbean Sea. Upon arrival at Isla Mujeres, you'll dock in downtown, where you can coordinate pickup to your accommodations!

Things to do in Isla Mujeres, Mexico
Rent a golf cart! It's one of the best ways to explore the island at your own pace. With Isla Mujeres being just over four miles long, golf carts offer the quickest and easiest way to get around — from hotels to beaches and downtown. Plus, it's a fun and convenient mode of transportation! Many rental companies and hotels offer flexible pricing, with both hourly and daily rates available, making it easy to find a cart that suits your needs. Tip: Don’t forget to bring your driver’s license!
Punta Sur at sunrise is a MUST. This ecological park is located at the southern tip of the island and is known for its dramatic cliffs and sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea. It’s the highest point on the Yucatán Peninsula, offering a perfect vantage point for sunrise. It is also home to a few ancient Mayan ruins and endless blue waters that you can view along the scenic walking paths.
Playa Norte is the main beach spot on the island. It is a stunning, postcard-worthy beach. You can relax under a thatched-roof palapa or take a dip in the turquoise waters while enjoying the food and drinks offered by the Mayan Beach Club (see below!)
Day trips
Cancún: Just a short ferry ride back to the mainland, Cancún is probably one of the most well-known spots along the Yucatán Peninsula. This city is known for its vibrant nightlife and luxury spas but is also home to great shopping and the Mayan Museum. I would recommend going either before or after your time on Isla, especially if flying in and out of Cancún so you aren't going back and forth.
Cozumel: Island hop to gorgeous Cozumel. It’s a dream spot for snorkeling or scuba diving because of its clear, warm water and coral reefs. It is reachable by ferry to Playa del Carmen and then a short transfer.
Tulum: A bit of a journey as well, but well worth it. Tulum is reachable by ferry and a drive south from Playa del Carmen. You can explore its famous beachfront Mayan ruins, relax on pristine beaches and experience the vibrant boho-chic culture of the town.
Places to eat & drink in Isla Mujeres, Mexico
Limón Restaurant — I don't know how I found this place, but I am so glad I did! It is a romantic, two-story outdoor restaurant nestled among the trees. Serving ocean-to-table seafood that fuses Mexican and international cuisine. Please note they are cash-only & require a reservation, so if you are wanting to check out this incredible spot, make sure you plan accordingly!
Mayan Beach Club Restaurant & Tequileria — Located right on Playa Norte, this is a very relaxed beachfront dining experience that also provides service on the beach as well! Complete with a diverse menu and of course, an extensive tequila selection perfect for a sun-filled day at the beach!
Mar-Bella Raw Bar & Grill, Isla Mujeres — Another fresh seafood favorite on the island, this is a great spot to stop at before or after visiting Punta Sur. They have beach access if you want to stop by during the day for something more casual. If you fancy a more romantic evening out, come around sunset for a gorgeous view of the sun dropping behind the water.
The Soggy Peso Palapa Bar — Pitstop at this famous dive bar for a Bloody Mary, you won't regret it!
Stingray- This is the spot for an evening of fun featuring an epic Karaoke experience. Such a fun spot in the heart of the city to enjoy music and drinks.
JaxBar - The local downtown sports bar right before you get to the access point for Playa Norte, they have a rooftop that boasts great views & a phenomenal frozen drink!
Rock Bar — Located on the main pedestrian street, Avenida Hidalgo, you will be able to spot this quaint bar because of their pink neon lights! Featuring the "Mexico My Love" sign, they also have cheap drinks and pizza if you're craving a slice. Pro Tip: five tequilas for $100 MXN pesos!

"Traveler Tips"
Best Time to Visit: Depends on what you are looking for and your preferences! High season is January–April when the weather is the best, but be careful of higher prices. Low season is September–November, still great weather, not as hot and less crowded! We went for Thanksgiving.
Getting Around: Taxi's are plenty, but again I would highly recommend looking into golf cart rentals to allow yourself more flexibility during your stay.
Local Etiquette: Tipping is around 15% in either Pesos or USD. Cash is the preferred method of payment on the island, so plan accordingly!
When visiting Isla Mujeres, I encourage you to slow down, take in the island's laid-back pace and explore with an open heart. Embrace all the unique charms Isla Mujeres has to offer!
