Things to do in Bahamas
The Bahamas has so much to offer for every type of traveler, but here are my top 4 reasons on why you should visit these islands:
Natural Beauty: The Bahamas boasts some of the most stunning landscapes in the world. From the otherworldly blue holes of Andros Island to the pink sands of Harbour Island, there are over 700 islands and cays that make up this Caribbean paradise.
Water Adventures: With its pristine waters and diverse marine life, this place is a haven for water sports enthusiasts. Snorkeling, scuba diving, and sailing are just a few of the aquatic adventures awaiting you. Not to mention the amazing world-renowned waterparks at both Baha Mar and Atlantis Resorts.
Rich Culture: Beyond its picturesque beaches, The Bahamas is steeped in history and culture. Explore the colorful streets of Nassau, immerse yourself in Junkanoo festivities or sample authentic Bahamian cuisine for a taste of the local flavor.
Luxury Retreats: From lavish resorts to boutique hotels, The Bahamas offers unparalleled luxury accommodations, ensuring a pampered and indulgent escape.
Top 5 Travel Tips:
Currency and Plug Types: No need to exchange currency, US dollars are used just as regularly as Bahamian dollars. Additionally, you can use the same electrical outlets and plugs as you would in North America. One less thing for you to pack!
Transportation: Your hotel should have airport transfers all ready to go, though taxis are also readily available, so you should have no need to rent a car. If you do choose to, keep in mind that cars drive on the left side of the road.
Safety: Stay alert and be mindful of your surroundings, especially at night. Avoid Nassau's 'over the hill' area (south of Shirley Street).
Weather Conditions: Stay updated with weather forecasts, especially during the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1st to November 30th). Purchase travel insurance that covers trip cancellations due to severe weather.
Respect Marine Life and Coral Reefs: When snorkeling or diving, be mindful not to touch or disturb the coral reefs, as they are delicate ecosystems.
Sun Protection: Protect yourself from the intense sun in the Bahamas by regularly applying sunscreen with a high SPF, wearing sunglasses, wide-brimmed hats and seeking shade during the hottest hours of the day.
Local Laws and Customs: Familiarize yourself with Bahamian laws and customs to ensure a respectful and enjoyable experience. For example, it's illegal to wear camouflage clothing in the Bahamas, and public nudity is prohibited. Additionally, be courteous to locals and ask for permission before taking photos of individuals or their property.
Places to eat & drink in Bahamas
Marcus at Baha Mar is a restaurant created by renowned chef Marcus Samuelsson, who is known for his innovative approach to cuisine that blends flavors from his diverse background with traditional Bahamian ingredients.
Some signature dishes at Marcus at Baha Mar:
Jerk Pork Belly Tacos: A creative take on a Caribbean classic, featuring succulent pork belly seasoned with jerk spices and served in a soft taco shell.
Crab Cake with Scotch Bonnet Aioli: This dish combines the delicate sweetness of crab with the spicy kick of Scotch bonnet peppers.
Grilled Bahamian Lobster: Marcus Samuelsson's take on this Bahamian staple typically involves grilling fresh lobster to perfection.
Conch Fritters: A beloved Bahamian delicacy, conch fritters are a must at Marcus!
Don't forget to order the "Yes, Chef" drink! Chef Marcus Samuelsson's signature cocktail, named after his New York Times and James Beard Award-winning memoir.
