Day 1: Arrival in Liberia and transfer to Arenal

Hot springs at Tabacon Thermal Resort & Spa surrounded by lush greenery on a sunny day.

This itinerary is perfect for families or couples who love to stay active and experience a variety of locations and activities. If you’re keen on more adventure, like white water rafting, consider extending your stay in Arenal and saving Santa Teresa for another visit. Costa Rica has so much to offer that it warrants at least 2-3 return trips!

I’ve included both Papagayo and Santa Teresa options. You can choose to visit both or focus on one. Those who want to surf may want to head straight to Santa Teresa. The Papagayo Peninsula offers a tranquil beach experience with calm waters, upscale amenities, and beautiful scenery. Ideal for relaxation, water sports, and a more exclusive atmosphere. Santa Teresa, on the other hand, is known for its vibrant, rustic charm and great surf.

Day 1: Arrival in Liberia and Transfer to Arenal

Afternoon: Arrive at Liberia International Airport. Travel to Arenal (approx. 2.5-3 hours).

Evening: Check into your hotel, such as Tabacon Thermal Resort & Spa. Unwind with dinner and a soak in the hot springs.

Day 2: Exploring Arenal

View of the Arenal Volcano surrounded by lush greenery on a cloudy day.

Morning: Hike in Arenal Volcano National Park. Enjoy views of the volcano and spot local wildlife. Walk through the forest canopy on the Arenal Hanging Bridges. Visit La Fortuna Waterfall and enjoy a refreshing swim.

Evening: Dine in La Fortuna at a local restaurant or enjoy a meal at Tabacon or Nayara.

Day 3: Arenal to Papagayo

Casa De Playa's pool with ocean view faces the waves on a sunny day.

Morning: Take a final dip in the hot springs. Get picked up for your transfer to the Papagayo Peninsula. (2.5-3 hours)

Afternoon: Check into the Andaz Costa Rica Resort or the Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo. I recommend Casa de Playa, the beach club at the Andaz or Virador Beach Club at the Four Seasons.

Evening: Enjoy dinner at one of the Andaz’s restaurants, such as Ostra or Rio Bhongo or take a boat taxi or shuttle to the Four Seasons to enjoy dining there.

Note: The beaches in the Papagayo Peninsula boast a backdrop of tropical forests. The beaches are known for their crystal-clear waters, making them ideal for swimming and snorkeling. If you are at a resort, you will have access to amenities and services, including beach clubs, water sports equipment, and dining options.

Day 4: Relaxation at Papagayo

A group of people paddle boarding in Culebra Bay on a sunny day.

Morning: Kayak or paddle board in Culebra Bay.

Afternoon: Unwind on the beach or enjoy snorkeling or jet skiing.

Evening: Enjoy a relaxing evening dining at Chao Pescao or Meso at the Andaz. Or, dine at Bahia or Pesce at the Four Seasons.

Day 5: Papagayo to Santa Teresa

Dine at Manzu, that sits beachfront at sunset.

Morning: Get picked up for your transfer to Santa Teresa (3.5-4 hours)

Afternoon: Check into Nantipa, a Tico Beach Experience in Santa Teresa. Relax on the beach or by the pool.

Evening: Dinner at Nantipa’s beachfront restaurant, Manzu.

Day 6: Enjoying Santa Teresa

Surfing at Santa Teresa is thrilling as a surfer rides through a barrel on a cloudy day.

Morning: Take a surfing lesson or enjoy free surfing. Santa Teresa is known for its great waves. Also consider booking a full-day tour with Manakin Tours - they offer a wide variety of options. We enjoyed a day out snorkeling at Isla Tortuga, and got to see the spider monkeys at a nearby island. I highly recommend trying the local drink - coco loco!

Afternoon: Explore nearby beaches like Playa Carmen or Playa Mal País. Alternatively, take a yoga class or a horseback riding tour.

Evening: Enjoy a beachfront dinner at one of Santa Teresa’s top restaurants, such as Koji’s.

Day 7: Departure or a beach day

Enjoy swimming at the beach as tourists snorkel of the coast on a sunny day.

Morning: Spend your last morning relaxing on the beach or taking a final swim.

Afternoon: Prepare for your departure, ensuring you have ample time to reach the airport for your flight.

Travel Tips

Consider an 8-Day Stay: I suggest staying longer than you planned. The last day will be mostly spent traveling back to Liberia or San Jose.

Regional Flights: If departing from Santa Teresa, you may need to take a short regional flight from Cobano airport. Note that these are small planes, and both you and your luggage will be weighed before boarding.

Enjoy your fabulous week in Costa Rica!
