Day Trips
Tongariro Alpine Crossing - New Zealand's BEST Day Hike
If you've ready anything about the "Great Walks" New Zealand is known for, you've heard about Tongariro. The average hiker is done in six to eight hours, and it is a lot of work, but comes with breathtaking landscapes. While this is near Lake Taupo, it will be an entire day of your trip, so I wouldn't plan anything else that day except dinner and maybe some stretching. If you do the crossing, make sure you pack layers; it gets drastically hot and cold. Also, make sure your travel advisor arranges your transit as it is a one-way hike.
Visit Hobbiton
The Lord of the Rings movie sets are less than 90 minutes away and so fun for anyone who is a fan of the book or movies!
