Curator’s statement

I've been going to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, for 20-plus years and recently I've decided to spend my summers there. I can tell you the best time to visit Rehoboth Beach, when the crowds, humidity, and the traffic has gone. The day after Labor Day starts the off-season of and it's truly the best time to visit without the chaos of the summer crowds.

Things to do in Rehoboth, Delaware

Beaches
The Delaware beaches are some of the cleanest, which makes them the most popular beaches, attracting visitors from multiple states and as far as upstate New York. Which is why I recommend visiting Rehoboth after Labor Day. The Delaware beaches span multiple beaches but my preference is Rehoboth Beach. You don't have to stray too far if you visit after Labor Day, because the crowds will be gone.

Enjoy the "Sussex" breeze, as the locals call it, as you relax and listen to the waves crashing. Rehoboth is my preferred beach due to the proximity of restaurants and shops within a short walking distance.

The other beaches such as Lewes, Dewey, Bethany and Fenwick are just as great, but if you want to be close to the action, Rehoboth is the place to be.

Shopping
Rehoboth is now a year-round destination. You do not have to worry about restaurants or shops being closed. They may have altered hours, but its not a ghost town like some of the other beach towns in the United States after Labor Day.

The shopping ranges from antiques to furniture to boutique clothing. My wife has visited downtown Rehoboth and the boardwalk one too many times, yet she can still find places to browse.

Maybe you want to find a book to take to the beach, check out Browseabout Books. Who knows who you will run into, you may encounter a First Lady.

Music
Rehoboth and Dewey are great at catching local singers and up and coming acts. Check out Conch Island, Dog Fish, or Bottle and Cork (Dewey).

Brewery Tours
Make your brew crawl but visiting the various breweries in Rehoboth and surrounding areas. If you want to make the trek, drive out to Milton to Dogfish Head for one of the meccas or craft brews. Dogfish Head in Milton is the brewery, but you can sample the beers at their restaurant in Rehoboth. Other breweries to check out include Thompson Island Brewery, Revelation Craft Brewery, Crooked Hammock, Dewey Beer Co. and Rehoboth Ale House.

Places to eat & drink in Rehoboth, Delaware

Indoor restaurant seating at Salt Air in Rehoboth Beach

Breakfast
Egg - If you are going to a Mid-Atlantic beach like Delaware, you must have crab. Crab with everything. Get the Eastern Shore Benedict from Egg, you wont be disappointed. Jumbo Lumped Crab, Poached Egg, Hollandaise sauce topped on an English muffin.

Rise up Coffee - On a typical summer day, you could be waiting up to 30 minutes for your breakfast burrito, but if you take my advice and go during the off season and after labor day, it may only take 10 min. Order the Local Burrito, Tater Tots, and a coffee and take it down to the beach.

Lunch
Greenman Juice Bar and Bistro - Looking for something health? Look no further. Get yourself the Hearty Grain Bowl and the Red Baron (beet, carrot, apple) and this will hold you over until dinner.

Mariachi Restaurant - Looking to indulge a little more? Get some fajitas at this Mexican staple. There are classics and chef's favorites to choose from.

Dinner
Salt Air - After you have strolled some of shops, if you want coastal food and the flavors of Delaware, check out Salt Air. Salt Air is the perfect place to splurge if you are looking for a more fine dining-ish experience. Resist from loading up on the addictive parmesan crackers.

Touch of Italy - There will be multiple Italian places, but in my opinion Touch Of Italy is the best. Its located about a 10 minute drive from downtown Rehoboth, but its worth a visit. The Chicken Parmesan is one of the best chicken parmesan I've had. Save room for dessert, you'll be thinking about the desserts as you walk pass the pastry counter.

Stringray Sushi Bar - You did not think Rehoboth with have such diversity in food did you? Yes, the sushi is great here along with the cocktails. For non-sushi lovers, there are options too. Feeling adventurous? Order the Chef's Choice and watch as your sushi arrives on a boat.

Cafe Azafran - $12 tapas, $25 Steak night, 3 courses for $30, need I say more. Check out their specials, but this place is all about the tapas. If you do go after Labor Day, there is a small window where you can catch Paella night on a Wednesday night.

Drinks
Bodhi Kitchen - If you still have a hankering for Asian fusion, Bodhi Kitchen is your place. If you are not, do stop into Bodhi Kitchen for a drink. This place has some of the best vibes in Rehoboth to enjoy a drink and to get some Asian street food.

Libation Room (Summer House) - This is a not so secret speak easy. You dont need a password for this place but you do have to know where you are going to find it. Located in the back of Summer House, this again has a vibe that is unexpected in Rehoboth. Make a reservation and grab pre-dinner or post dinner drinks here. Another perfect location for a date night.

Ice Cream

Some of the best ice cream, I have eaten are from my time spent in Delaware. I particularly enjoy Hopkins Farm Creamery. They have an outpost in Dewey Beach, not too far from Rehoboth. Its about a 10 minute drive straight down Coastal Highway. You should be able to find this is stores in the area also. If you cant, there are plenty of places in Rehoboth to try, but I prefer Hopkins Farm Creamery.
