Curator’s statement

For a week-long trip to Greece, Mykonos and Paros can be the perfect combination of islands. Mykonos offers a more touristy experience with tons of activities, such as cooking classes, winery visits, nightlife, boat rides and so much more. Paros offers a less busy, more local atmosphere where you can rent a car and explore small towns and relax on secluded beaches. Combining these two islands into one trip can create a perfect balance of exciting activities, vibrant nightlife and authentic experiences. Here’s a detailed look at my recommendations from my recent trip to these incredibly beautiful Greek islands.

Day 1: Traveling to Mykonos

A quaint Mediterranean street with white buildings and colorful doors.

Flight

Easily the most relaxed way to get there is a quick flight from Athens. Consider spending a few days soaking up the Athens vibe first, or, if you're eager to feel the sand between your toes, head straight from the airport. Just a friendly heads-up, if you're going right from the Athens airport, you'll need to recheck your luggage and navigate security again. So, to keep your journey leisurely, I'd suggest at least a three-hour gap between your landing in Athens and your flight to Mykonos. The Athens to Mykonos leg is a breeze, just about 30 minutes. And for those skipping over from other parts of Europe, like London, direct flights to Mykonos are available during the peak season.

Ferry

Hop on a ferry at Piraeus Port if you're city-based. If you're at the Athens airport, Rafina port is your best bet. The ferry ride to Mykonos can vary from a swift 2.5 hours to a leisurely 4.5 hours. A word to the wise though — the zippier ferries tend to be a tad more turbulent, so if you're sensitive to motion, choose a slower ferry and a bigger boat. I've found Ferryhopper to be a fantastic tool. It gives you the lowdown on the type of vessel and passenger capacity. Ferries with vehicle garages are typically larger and thus steadier than the smaller, passenger-only ones. Keep in mind, ferry schedules and types can change, so it's always a good idea to keep an eye on Ferryhopper.

Hotel

For your hotel, Katikies Mykonos is more than just a place to rest your head. It's a slice of heaven on earth and one of the nicest luxury hotels in Mykonos. The staff there? They're not just warm-hearted, they're practically mind readers, anticipating and fulfilling your every need, no matter how small. The rooms? They're like something out of a dream, many even offering private terraces and plunge pools for that extra touch of luxury. And the views, oh, the views! Picture this: sweeping panoramas of the endless Aegean Sea that will take your breath away every single time. Trust me, it's an experience you won't want to miss.

Day 2: Discovering Mykonos

A panoramic view of the Mykonos harbor at sunset, showcasing white buildings against the Aegean Sea, with boats in the water and hills in the distance.

Morning

Kick off your Mykonos adventure by hopping on the bus or hailing a taxi to the heart of the town, also known as Chora. Let yourself get lost in its narrow, white-washed streets, lined with an assortment of quaint shops, lively bars and enticing restaurants. After some aimless wandering to soak up the local atmosphere, don't miss the iconic windmills, the Panagia Paraportiani Church and the postcard-perfect Little Venice. Treat yourself to a cup of coffee and a nice breakfast at a waterfront restaurant like Kastro’s. You'll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the sea and the windmills.

Next up, a journey to the Mykonos Brewing Company, a hidden treasure just a short ride away from town or a hilly, 30-minute trek for those seeking a bit of a challenge. There, you'll discover Mikònu beers, each one as unique as the island itself. Take a peek behind the scenes with a guided brewery tour, witnessing the magic that transforms simple ingredients into a variety of delightful brews. And the best part? You'll get to taste up to five different varieties, truly immersing yourself in this local gem.

Afternoon

Spend your first afternoon relaxing at one of the most iconic beach bars in Mykonos, Scorpios. Enjoy a delicious lunch while unwinding on the beach's inviting sun loungers, with the mesmerizing sea as your backdrop. Read a good book or simply soak up the Greek sun for a relaxing afternoon.

Evening

Picture this: your first day in Mykonos drawing to a close, and you're tucked away on a private, stunning beach. As the sun dips below the horizon, you're learning to master the art of cocktail-making with Greece's finest spirits. A cocktail class is a delightful way to taste traditional Greek spirits, set against the soothing soundtrack of the sea.

Dining

End your day on a high note at Karavaki. With a breathtaking view and a menu full of delectable Greek delicacies, I highly recommend trying the shrimp saganaki, a classic Greek dish of shrimp in a spicy tomato sauce with feta cheese.

Day 3: Cooking & wine tasting

Morning

Enjoy a sunny morning spent at leisure, followed by an afternoon of culinary adventure at the charming home of Stelios and Georgia, one of Mykonos' most hospitable couples. They welcome you with open arms to their home, where you'll get hands-on experience in crafting the perfect souvlaki in their cooking class. From selecting the freshest veggies to marinating the meat and whipping up a creamy tzatziki sauce, every step is a journey in flavor. The best part? Sharing it all on a fresh pita with new friends, and savoring the most authentic Greek meal you'll find on the island. An unforgettable experience, guaranteed.

Afternoon

To continue your authentic adventure, it’s time to visit a beautiful, family-owned local winery in the heart of Mykonos. Explore the lush olive groves and grape vineyards as you learn about the art of crafting small-batch olive oil and wine. Your tour of the grounds is perfectly complemented by homemade local appetizers alongside plenty of wine, all to the lively rhythm of traditional Greek music.

Dining

Kick-start your evening with a refreshing pre-dinner cocktail amidst the captivating views at the Garden of Mykonos. Then, make your way over to Krama for a gourmet dinner experience. Do yourself a favor and try the mushroom dish — it's to die for.

Day 4: Relaxing & cruising

Morning

Kick off your day at Hippie Fish, a beach club designed for ultimate relaxation. Claim a sunbed and immerse yourself in the serene morning atmosphere with a refreshing freddo espresso or a spritz in hand while listening to the soothing ocean. Come lunchtime, you can enjoy a delightful meal without leaving the comfort of your sunbed, or take a short stroll to the restaurant for a dining experience with a stunning sea view.

Afternoon

End your last day in Mykonos by sailing along the stunning coastline on a private yacht or semi-private catamaran. Envision the boat effortlessly cutting through the crystal-clear waters, offering you front-row seats to the scenic view of the iconic white-washed buildings of Mykonos. The crew are at the ready to serve refreshing cocktails and sumptuous appetizers, all adding to the incredible evening. And just as you think the day can't get any better, the sun starts to set, making the sky a gorgeous orange, pink and purple. You'll find yourself anchored in a private bay, with the Aegean Sea inviting you in for a swim, to snorkel or to simply float. Alternatively, you can choose to stay aboard, let the gentle swaying of the boat soothe you and surrender to the tranquility it brings.

Day 5: Journey to Paros

A scenic view of white buildings by a clear blue sea under a partly cloudy sky.

Morning

Day five on your journey will see you boarding a ferry for a delightful 45-minute jaunt to the nearby island of Paros. I highly recommend renting a car on Paros so that you can experience the freedom. There are plenty of car rental companies right along the ferry port and, unlike Mykonos, the roads are much easier to traverse on your own. Stay at Parilio, a five-star haven offering a range of spacious suites to suit your taste. Parilio wraps you in warmth and luxury, like a cherished home, but with the added charm of a dreamlike setting. The staff are exceptional, always ready to go the extra mile. And the pool? It’s a dream.

Afternoon

Spend your afternoon lounging on the gorgeous, nearby Kolymbithres beach. Bask in the warmth of the Mediterranean sun as the gentle waves wash against the unique, sculpted rock formations that make this beach so unique. Whether you're sunbathing, swimming in the crystal-clear waters, or exploring the intriguing rock pools, Kolymbithres offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.

Dining

As dusk sweeps over the island, make your way to the charming fishing village of Naoussa. Here, you'll find a lively array of bars and restaurants lining the scenic harbor, each a perfect spot to enjoy a refreshing cocktail while basking in the glow of the stunning sunset. When hunger strikes, I highly recommend you visit Notos. Their exciting menu blends Greek and Italian cuisines to create a delicious dining experience.

Day 6: Exploring Antiparos

Morning

Set sail from Paros around the charming island of Antiparos. As you traverse its beautiful landscapes and pristine waters, you'll find yourself captivated by the stunning vistas unfolding around every corner. The sun dances on the surface of the crystal-clear waters, tempting you to take a rejuvenating dip or go snorkeling to meet our underwater neighbors. Your journey will take you to hidden coves and untouched beaches, accessible only by boat, giving you a unique sense of peace and solitude. Feel the soft sea breeze against your skin as you navigate around the island, immersing yourself in the tranquil rhythm of this Mediterranean haven. Whether you prefer to bask in the sun on the deck or plunge into the inviting waters for a swim, a voyage around Antiparos guarantees a memorable encounter with serene natural beauty.

Afternoon

Drift away to the island's picturesque beaches for a leisurely afternoon. If the winds pick up, seek refuge on a southern beach — they're a perfect windbreak. My personal recommendation? Give Tripiti Beach 2 a whirl. It's tranquil and beautiful and never fails to impress.

Day 7: Touring Paros Villages

a-narrow-alley-way-with-a-clock-tower-in-the-background-paros-travel-guide

Morning

Savor your final day in Paros by embarking on a leisurely drive around the island. Discover the charm of the diverse villages and immerse yourself in the authentic Parian lifestyle. Begin your journey in the picturesque village of Lefkes, where you can admire the intricate architecture of its Byzantine church, immerse yourself in local history at the folklore museum and discover unique pieces in its art shops. Next, venture to Marpissa and visit the serene Agios Nikolaos Monastery and the sculpture exhibition that's a testament to the island's artistic flair. Conclude your morning in Piso Livadi, a charming fishing port where you can unwind on the beach and savor the flavors of the island at local tavernas.

Afternoon

Treat yourself to an afternoon at Moraitis Winery, a haven for wine lovers. Discover the pleasure of tasting an array of fascinating wines, guided by the warm and well-informed winery team who'll share the captivating stories behind each bottle. Take a moment to unwind on the inviting terrace, letting the serene surroundings wash over you as you savor your chosen wine.

Dining

After a delightful week of indulging in restaurant dining, you might be yearning for a change of pace. A humble suggestion for your final evening — why not experience the simple joys of a local gyro or souvlaki in the charming towns of Naoussa or Parikia?
