Day 1: Exploring the Historic Center
Start your day with a visit to the iconic Duomo di Milano (Milan Cathedral). Explore this magnificent Gothic masterpiece, including the rooftop terrace for stunning views of the city. Adjacent to the Duomo is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, one of the world's oldest shopping malls. Take a stroll through its elegant arcades and perhaps stop for a coffee or light lunch at one of the historic cafes.
In the afternoon, head to the nearby Piazza della Scala and visit the renowned Teatro La Scala Opera House for a guided tour to learn about its rich history and see the opulent interiors. Next, explore the charming Brera neighborhood and wander through its narrow cobblestone streets lined with art galleries, boutiques, and cafes.
Have dinner at one of the cozy restaurants in Brera, sampling more local specialties or opting for classic Italian favorites. Milan boasts a rich culinary heritage, blending traditional Lombard cuisine with influences from across Italy. Among its iconic dishes are risotto alla Milanese, a creamy saffron-infused rice dish, and ossobuco, a hearty braised veal shank stew. Cotoletta alla Milanese, a breaded and fried veal cutlet, and various breaded meats are also staples.
Before calling it a night, take a leisurely stroll in Parco Sempione, a beautiful park near the imposing Sforza Castle. Enjoy the serene atmosphere and perhaps catch a glimpse of the illuminated castle.
Day 2: Art and Culture
Start your day with a visit to the elegant Pinacoteca di Brera, an art gallery housed in a former convent. Admire its impressive collection of Italian Renaissance masterpieces, including works by artists like Caravaggio and Raphael. After exploring the gallery, take a walk through the picturesque streets of Brera and soak in its artistic ambiance.
Head to the futuristic district of Porta Nuova to visit the impressive modern art museum, Fondazione Prada. Explore its contemporary exhibitions and innovative architecture designed by Rem Koolhaas. Enjoy lunch at one of the trendy cafes or restaurants in the Porta Nuova area, known for its diverse culinary scene.
Spend your evening in the Navigli district, known for its lively canalside atmosphere. Take a scenic walk along the Naviglio Grande, lined with bars, restaurants and vintage shops. Choose a spot along the Naviglio Grande or Naviglio Pavese, where you can enjoy a drink while watching the sunset over the water.
Have dinner at a cozy trattoria along the canal, sampling delicious Italian dishes while enjoying the vibrant nightlife. If you're interested, you can also catch a performance at one of the local theaters or live music venues in the area.
Day 3: Day Trip to Lake Como
On your last full day, take a day trip to Lake Como, located just a short train ride away from Milan. Start your day early to make the most of your time. Upon arrival in Como, take a scenic boat ride on Lake Como to admire its stunning landscapes and picturesque villages along the shoreline.
Explore the charming town of Bellagio, often called the "Pearl of Lake Como." Stroll through its narrow streets, visit the beautiful gardens of I Giardini di Villa Melzi and enjoy panoramic views of the lake. Have lunch at a lakeside restaurant, savoring fresh seafood and regional specialties while taking in the serene ambiance.
In the late afternoon, head back to Milan and spend your evening at leisure. For an authentic and memorable final pre-dinner aperitivo to toast your time in Milan, here are some of the best places to consider:
Terrazza Aperol in Piazza del Duomo, offers stunning views of Milan's iconic cathedral and bustling square.
Visit Corso Como, a fashionable street in the heart of Milan, known for its trendy bars and nightlife scene Choose one of the stylish venues along this street for a sophisticated aperitivo experience, or visit 10 Corso Como. This iconic concept store, art gallery and café offers a stylish and sophisticated atmosphere perfect for enjoying pre-dinner drinks.
For a more upscale experience, visit one of the elegant cafes or bars inside the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Enjoy your aperitivo surrounded by the stunning architecture of this historic shopping arcade.
For your farewell dinner, choose a restaurant in Milan's historic center or your favorite neighborhood, enjoying one last taste of authentic Italian cuisine.
Overview of Additional Days
If you have a partial extra day (or unexpected rain day!) in Milan, check out one of my favorite museums:
Museo del Novecento, centrally located in the Palazzo dell'Arengario near the Duomo, this museum showcases 20th-century Italian art, featuring works by renowned artists like Boccioni, Modigliani and Fontana.
Museo Poldi Pezzoli is housed in an elegant 19th-century mansion and features an eclectic collection of artworks and decorative arts, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics and armor from various time periods.
Museo Bagatti Valsecchi is another aristocratic mansion-turned-museum. This institution offers visitors a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of Milanese aristocracy during the Renaissance through its extensive collection of furnishings, paintings and decorative arts.
Need to know
When visiting Milan, Italy, start your days early to avoid crowds at popular attractions like the Duomo di Milano and Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper." Consider purchasing skip-the-line tickets in advance for key landmarks to save time. I also recommend dressing stylishly to fit in, as Milan is known as one of the fashion capitals of the world.
Lastly, take advantage of Milan's efficient public transportation system, which is comprehensive and affordable. For your trip to/from the airport, I personally prefer the Malpensa Express is a dedicated train service that connects Milan's city center with Malpensa Airport. Operating from Milan's Cadorna Station and Milano Centrale Station, the Malpensa Express offers comfortable seating, ample luggage space and frequent departures.
