Curator’s statement

The Costa Brava offers dramatic coastlines, picturesque coves, medieval villages and that glorious Mediterranean light. Arguably Spain’s most magical slice of paradise that keeps those in the know coming back throughout the summer. What sets it apart from other Mediterranean destinations is its steadfast commitment to authenticity and unassuming charm, eschewing the glitz and glamor for a genuine connection to its roots.

Things to do in Costa Brava

If you find yourself in Barcelona from May through October, make sure to carve out three days in the Costa Brava. Situated just 60 kilometers north of Barcelona, in the Girona province, this coastal region shares a border with southern France. A short one-and-a-half hour drive from Barcelona lands you amidst charming fishing villages, rural estates, and sun-soaked rocky coves overlooking the clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

Things to do in the Costa Brava:

  • Bask in the Sun on a Cala: A cala, a small bay or inlet common along the Mediterranean, offers rocky seclusion for sunbathing and relaxation.

  • Stroll the Camí de Ronda: Follow in the footsteps of ancient travelers along this coastal footpath, now a serene route for leisurely walks between beaches or to savor seaside dining.

  • Indulge in Authentic Paella: Embrace local tradition by savoring a freshly prepared paella with a view of the Mediterranean, immersing yourself in the flavors of the region.

  • Sail into the Sunset: Embark on a voyage aboard a traditional wooden llaut, and explore the enchanting corners of the Mediterranean as the sun dips below the horizon.

  • Admire Dali's Masterpieces: Art enthusiasts can immerse themselves in the surreal world of Salvador Dalí by visiting his renowned museum in Figueres or his captivating former residence in Port Lligat.

  • Explore Medieval Villages: Wander through the cobblestone streets of Pals and Peratallada, where time seems to stand still in these impeccably preserved medieval villages.

  • Hunt for Treasures in La Bisbal: Explore the quaint antique and ceramics shops in La Bisbal.

  • Wine tasting: Explore local vineyards of the Empordá wine region like Mas Oller.

Best Calas in the Costa Brava:

  • In Blanes / Tossa de Mar: Cala Bona; Cala Tremal; Playa Santa Cristina; Cala Es Codolar

  • In Sant Feliu de Guixols/S'Agaro/Palamos: Sant Pol and Sa Conca; Cala S’Alguer

  • In Calella de Palafrugell / Llafranc: El Golfo, Port Bo, Llafranc

  • In Begur / Pals: Cala Aiguablava; Sa Riera, Sa Tuna, Platja de Illa Roja; Platja Fonda

  • Tossa de Mar: Venture to Cala Bona a charming no-frills chiringuito (beach bar) accessible only by boat or foot, offering a rustic seaside ambiance.

  • S'Agaro: For delectable local seafood with a beachside setting, visit Restaurant Villa Mas, or opt for a more formal dining experience at Restaurant Candlelight by Romain Fornell.

  • Calella de Palafrugell / Llafranc: Enjoy a leisurely lunch of fresh fish at Tragamar, or savor a set-course meal and long lunch at Casamar. Conclude your day beneath the arches at La Blava for a picturesque sunset.

  • Begur: Dont miss the restaurant at Hotel Cap Sa Sal, nestled amidst pine trees overlooking the sea, or indulge in one of the mouthwatering paellas at Toc al Mar, particularly if you're enjoying a day on the water.

  • Cadaques: Relish the breathtaking views of Cadaques from the terrace of Talla while savoring delectable Catalan cuisine. Head to Cap de Creus for a scenic lunch and live music in the summer. For an unforgettable gastronomic experience from the famed chefs of three Michelin star Disfrutar, dine at sister restaurant Compartir.
