Things to do in Mumbai

Cyclists on a busy street.
  • Go on an early-morning bicycle ride: Watch the city wake up as you navigate the streets during a much more manageable hour. This is a one-of-a-kind experience for the extra curious.

  • Sample the street food: Mumbai’s street food can’t be missed whether it’s sea-side at Chowpatty Beach or on the busy streets of Mohammed Ali Road. For a little assistance, join one of Reality Tours and Travel street food tours, where 80% of the profits are used to fund community initiatives.

  • Experience a Bollywood film: Visit one of Mumbai’s iconic art-deco cinemas and immerse yourself in the vibrant world of Bollywood. Pro tip: at Regal Cinema in Colaba, they often show movies with English subtitles.

  • Relax in Bandra: Escape to the “Queen of the Suburbs” for a vibe change. Bandra, home to many Bollywood stars, is a village-like suburb in north Mumbai and is a great place to wander by the sea or enjoy brunch at one of the many charming cafes.

  • Shop for knick-knacks at Chor Bazaar: Get lost in Chor Bazaar, one of Mumbai's oldest markets, where you can unearth vintage Bollywood posters, quirky antiques and hidden treasures at every turn.

  • Catch a moment of solitude at a cow sanctuary: Would you believe hundreds of cows live in the heart of Mumbai? Bombay Panjrapole, a peaceful haven providing sanctuary for hundreds of cows, is hidden in the center of the city’s hustle and bustle — totally off-the-beaten path but a welcome place for a moment of calm during a busy day of sightseeing.

  • Learn about Mumbai’s challenges during a visit to Dharavi: Explore Dharavi, a vibrant community often misunderstood as just a slum, where innovation and resilience thrive. Visiting gives you a glimpse into the industrious spirit that drives Mumbai, showcasing small-scale industries and a tightly-knit community. But choose how you visit wisely. Reality Tours & Travel is the original operator in the area and conducts small-group tours — no photography allowed — with the utmost respect for the community, and in turn, uses the majority of their profits to fund community projects. Be on the lookout for copycat companies not operating as ethically.

  • People watch on Marine Drive: Enjoy people-watching on Marine Drive, where Mumbai's diverse life converges against the backdrop of the Arabian Sea. Whether it's joggers, street vendors or families out for a stroll, there's always something interesting to see.

  • Watch the fish come in at Sassoon Dock: Experience the lively chaos of Sassoon Dock, where Mumbai’s bustling fishing community brings in the day's catch. Time your visit right, and you can also catch vibrant art festivals that transform the docks into a colorful cultural hub.

Places to eat & drink in Mumbai

Gravy in a white bowl.
  • Punjab Sweet House: You’ll find the best pani puri at this mainstay in Bandra, and the most fantastic sev puri across the street. But if you prefer to sit down with air-conditioning, Elco — also in Bandra — is a solid choice and all-time favorite for classic street foods in a convenient setting.

  • Gupta Chaat: While we’re on chaat — Indian snacks— Gupta Chaat can’t be beat for their creativity – the sev puri grilled cheese and chocolate sandwich cannot be judged until they’re tried.

  • Shree Thaker Bhojanalay: Enjoy a hearty and authentic Gujarati thali at Shree Thaker Bhojanalay. You won’t believe how many dishes are on offer — think more than 10 — each lunchtime, and it can be overwhelming — in the best possible way — to have the servers doting on you and constantly offering included refills.

  • Swati Snacks: Indulge in a delightful mix of traditional and innovative vegetarian dishes at Swati Snacks, renowned for its fresh, tasty fare.

  • Britannia and Co.: This one’s a classic. Step into a slice of Mumbai’s history at Britannia and Co, where you can savor classic Parsi dishes like their famous mutton berry pulav in a charming old-world setting.

  • Mahesh Lunch Home: This one’s for the seafood lovers. Mahesh Lunch Home is a long-standing favorite known for its rich, flavorful preparations and coastal specialties.

  • Yazdani Bakery: Delight in freshly baked bread and Irani tea at Yazdani Bakery, a beloved Mumbai institution with a cozy, nostalgic vibe. Pro tip: Ask your guides to visit this during the early morning cycle ride mentioned above. It’s the perfect midway break and will make you feel like a local.

  • Bombay Canteen: For a more upscale option, head here for modern Indian cuisine with a twist and delicious cocktails.

  • Cafe Madras: If you don’t have time to visit South India, Cafe Madras is a great alternative. The dosas and filter coffee at this institution are as authentic as it gets.

  • Bademiya: For the night owls, savor mouthwatering kebabs and rolls at Bademiya, a legendary street food spot that’s a must-visit for meat lovers. Best enjoyed off the trunk of someone’s car after a night ride along Marine Drive.

  • Janata Lunch Home: If you’re ready to brave an evening of drinking in a watering hole about as local and no-frills as they come, head to Janata Lunch Home in Bandra. Warning: You’ll likely have to share a table with strangers, but that’s the best part.

  • Toto’s: Ever wanted to visit a garage themed pub? Then you’ll enjoy chilling out at Toto’s, a laid-back spot known for its great beer, hearty food and lively atmosphere.

  • Steps: A hip oasis in leafy Bandra, Steps is a charming little spot to enjoy a coffee while watching the world go by.
