Curator’s statement
During my visits to Puerto Rico, I've enjoyed the combination of Latin culture, sandy beaches and tropical jungles. The capital city of San Juan is an ideal starting point to experience some of the island's best beaches, cuisine and activities, and it's easily accessible from the continental US. Discover the best hidden gem restaurants for mofongo and a mojito, take hikes through the rainforest to a secluded rock slide and find beautiful beaches for swimming and snorkeling.

Things to do in San Juan, Puerto Rico

Explore Old San Juan: Old San Juan is the historic section of the city, where a daunting fort stands watch over the Caribbean and brightly-hued buildings line the cobblestone streets. Take a walking tour of Old San Juan to learn more about the cultural and historical significance of the area. Relax on the grassy lawn in front of the El Morro Fort, or for the history buffs take an in depth tour of the fortress
Take a Legacy Tour of Casa Bacardi: located just across the harbor from Old San Juan, this tour of the iconic Bacardi rum distillery is fun, informative and boozy. With a welcome cocktail and tastings of their Bacardi Reserve, this tour is a perfect way to enjoy the flavors of Puerto Rico. Are you a big fan of rum? Take the Mixology Class or Rum Tasting Tour for a more in-depth experience.
Hike through El Yunque National Forest: El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rainforest in the United States. Take a guided hike through the lush area to a waterfall with a natural rock slide. The cool, fresh water feels amazing after hiking in the tropical temps, and the slide and rope swing provide plenty of entertainment. This hike is a great way to experience the natural Puerto Rican landscape. In the mood for an adrenaline rush? Go ziplining over the rainforest for a unique point of view.
Kayak in the bioluminescent bay: experience one of the most unique natural phenomena up close! This kayaking tour in Fajardo will take you through the 'bio bay' at Laguna Grande. Led by a marine biologist, you can learn all about the plankton that lights up the waters while enjoying a leisurely paddle.
Snorkel off the Island of Icacos: Located an hour offshore from Fajardo, these crystal clear waters and protected reefs are ideal for spotting sea creatures. This boat tour includes snorkeling, drinks and lunch, so you can spend the whole day exploring the Caribbean blue.
Charter a sunset catamaran: Enjoy a breathtaking San Juan sunset from the water! This intimate catamaran cruise is the perfect way to end a day and see San Juan from a new perspective.
Enjoy a day at the beach: San Juan has beaches abounding, many of which can be found right outside your hotel!
Go surfing in Luqiullo: learn to ride the waves on the northeastern coast of Puerto Rico with former pro surfer Brian Ramos! This exciting surf lesson is for beginners and is ideal for families.
Day trips
Rincon - For a more laid-back, locals-only vibe, head to Rincon on the west coast of Puerto Rico. This surf town has a leisurely pace, tons of beaches and amazing sunsets.
Isabela - Secluded and scenic, Isabela is a great spot to stay if you're seeking a luxurious beach vacation without the bustle of the city. Stay at the Royal Isabela, a small resort that feels like it's part of the natural surroundings.
Fajardo - Many tours above are based out of Fajardo, a town on the island's east coast. With a bioluminescent bay and secluded islands off the coast, it's a perfect location for kayaking, snorkeling and diving.
Places to eat & drink in San Juan, Puerto Rico

La Casita Blanca - This little white house is a true gem, frequented by locals and well-informed tourists. Enjoy authentic Puerto Rican cuisine in a homey setting. The menu changes daily and is written on a chalkboard, but you can expect amazing mofongo.
El Jibarito - Located in Old San Juan, El Jibarito is a classic Puerto Rican restaurant that is always bustling. Authentic roasted pork, rice and beans and empanadas are my favorite items on their menu.
La Factoria - This lively bar is in Old San Juan and is separated into several rooms inside an old building. They have expertly crafted cocktails, including my favorite, La Champeta, with rum and pineapple juice.
Caribe Hilton Piña Colada - There is a clash of opinions on where the iconic piña colada originated. The Caribe Hilton claims that their bar created the OG island drink, and I can attest that their version is simply delicious. It's very unlike the sugary, frozen concoction popular in the States — this piña colada is light, frothy and coconut-y.
Casita Miramar - In Miramar, this delightful Puerto Rican restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy a family-style meal. The interior is quaint and packed, with several rooms throughout. The menu serves up authentic dishes that are meant to be shared.
Café Don Ruiz - Inside a former Spanish military barrick in Old San Juan, Cafe Don Ruiz provides authentic Puerto Rican coffee and pastries. Its ideal location across from El Morro makes it a great place to caffeinate before exploring Old San Juan.
Café con Cé - This hip coffee shop off Luiza Street has delicious lattes, and sells Puerto Rican coffee beans as well as other locally sourced goods. There's a food stand next door that has breakfast sandwiches and an outdoor seating area.
Kasalta - An iconic bakery that has everything from breakfast pastries to deli sandwiches. Come here hungry and order from the glass case, then sit inside and people watch.
