Things to do in Holbox

Sunset in Holbox
Swimming: There are no steep drop-offs on the beaches of Holbox — the water is shallow and calm, so it’s great for families with small children. Wade out a bit and spend some time floating or swimming while watching the pelicans dive for fish.
Bioluminescence: Book an excursion to visit the bioluminescent plankton that thrives in the waters near Punta Mosquito. This is the plankton that whale sharks migrate to feed on during the summer months. The bioluminescence is best seen around a new moon.
Whale Sharks: Starting in May, whale sharks begin turning up to Holbox to feed on the abundant plankton in the area. Book a group or private tour to snorkel with the biggest fish in the world.
Shopping: There are plenty of great boutiques lining the streets of the centro. Así Voy features colorful handmade crochet swimsuits. Xaman has lightweight tops, pants and dresses, made in Mexico. Fenicia Collective Market has a little bit of everything: clothes, candles, bath and body and local art. TLALEH Concept Store has clothes made in Mexico, and cute accessories. Le Bazaar Boutique has a fun array of unique clothing and jewelry, perfect for a night out.
Sunsets: Sunsets are an event in Holbox. Head to the playa, where you’ll be in great company with locals and visitors alike. There’s something special about so many people gathering together to appreciate this beautiful event each and every day.
Stargazing: Speaking of beauty, a clear night in Holbox provides an opportunity to stargaze. Bring a blanket to the beach and spot the constellations. Keep your eyes on the sky long enough and you may even see a shooting star!
Places to eat & drink in Holbox

Salsa medley at La Cabane
Copal Café: The perfect place to start your day with coffee and simple breakfast dishes. There’s some seating indoors and a pretty outdoor garden. An excellent spot for digital nomads.
La Cabane: Half Italian/half Mexican. Don’t sleep on breakfast, served daily at the Italian side of the restaurant. In the afternoon and evening, delicious pizzas from a wood-fired oven are served. On the Mexican side, expect tasty tacos and “sabroso choripan” which literally translates to “delicious chorizo sandwich” – no lies here! Great service, too.
Viva Zapata: A Holbox classic! This establishment serves up classic Mexican dishes and great guacamole. Try any of the shrimp entrees.
Café del Mar: This toes-in-the-sand beach shack has a great menu for breakfast and lunch, a full bar, and you can also rent a day bed or lounger.
Santos Fuegos: Grilled fare is the name of the game here. Dishes are straightforward yet creative. The fish of the day is excellent — served in a creamy cilantro sauce with plantains and red onion.
Luuma: A personal favorite from each of my Holbox trips — there’s a reason this restaurant has been around for years already! The restaurant has a vibe. The drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) are inventive, and the food is simply delicious.
Parador 33: Specializing in Argentinian fare, Parador 33 brings fresh flavors and something different from the other restaurants on the island. Consider splurging on the bife de lomo a la sal, a tender beef tenderloin served with roasted vegetables and a cauliflower puree – phenomenal.
Lazaro: Offering a bird’s eye view of the main square, Lazaro features great cocktails, fun music and all of the vibes for a fun night out.
Need to know
It can be difficult to obtain cash on the island — be sure to withdraw pesos at the airport, which you’ll need for tipping your drivers, anyway!
