Curator’s statement

I started coming to Park City, Utah, for the summer over ten years ago. Taking advantage of my schedule as an elementary school teacher, Park City was the perfect respite from the oppressive summer heat in Las Vegas. There is a saying: I came to the mountains for the winters and stayed for the summers. Park City epitomizes this motto.

Experience a season bursting with outdoor escapades and vibrant community festivities. Set against this breathtaking backdrop, here's how you can immerse yourself in the magic of Park City during the summer months.

Kayaking at the Jordanelle Reservoir

One of the best ways to start your summer adventure in Park City is with a peaceful kayak ride on the Jordanelle Reservoir. Surrounded by serene waters and framed by majestic mountains, the reservoir offers a perfect setting for paddling and enjoying the panoramic views. Whether you're a seasoned kayaker or a first timer, the calm waters and stunning scenery will leave you in awe. Looking across the reservoir and seeing the snowcapped mountains by Sundance is a sight to behold.

Biking through meadows and wildflowers

Exploring Park City on two-wheels is a must-do during the summer months. Picture yourself pedaling along scenic trails that wind through lush meadows dotted with grazing cows and blooming wildflowers. The fresh mountain air and the gentle sound of your bike tires on the dirt paths create a tranquil atmosphere that's hard to beat. Several businesses around town rent bicycles. The city has an e-bike share program with kiosks throughout town that allow bikes to be rented hourly.

Hiking the Mid Mountain Trail from Montage Deer Valley

Embark on a hiking journey along the iconic Mid Mountain Trail, starting from Montage Deer Valley. Take the town bus to the Montage and access the trail behind and to the left of the property. This shared-use trail offers sweeping views of the valley below and a chance to explore the alpine terrain at your own pace. Hike to the Town Lift for a scenic chair lift ride down to Main Street.

Savoring the Silly Market on Sundays

Experience the vibrant community spirit at the Silly Market, held every Sunday. This eclectic market features local artisans, live music and delicious culinary treats. Creating a lively atmosphere that captures the essence of Park City's creative energy.

Fourth of July parade on Main Street

Celebrate Independence Day in style at Park City's Fourth of July Parade on historic Main Street. Join the community in honoring the nation's birthday with a procession of floats, marching bands and festive displays that showcase local pride and patriotic spirit. This is an authentic small-town Americana and one of the best patriotic parades in the country.

Community-sponsored races and events

Participate in one of Park City's many community-sponsored races and events that cater to all fitness levels. Whether it's a trail run, mountain bike race or charity walk, these events are a great way to stay active, connect with locals and support worthy causes.

Deer Valley Music Festival with Utah Symphony

Look no further than the Deer Valley Music Festival for a blend of culture and natural beauty. Imagine sitting on a blanket under the starry sky, savoring a glass of wine and listening to the enchanting melodies of the Utah Symphony. The Utah Symphony begins its summer music season with a patriotic concert. It is a tradition to sit on the ski slope and listen to music. The outdoor amphitheater at Deer Valley Resort provides a spectacular venue where classical music's beauty meets the mountains' splendor. Concerts are held slope-side throughout the summer. Although I prefer to sit on a blanket, concertgoers can rent or bring a chair.

Day trips

A day trip to Sundance: hiking Stewart Falls

Just a short drive from Park City lies the picturesque mountain retreat of Sundance. With its scenic trails and peaceful ambiance, Sundance offers a perfect escape into nature. If you want to immerse yourself in the great outdoors, a day trip to Sundance to hike Stewart Falls is an absolute must.

Getting there

The drive to Sundance from Park City typically takes 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic and road conditions. As you wind through the stunning Provo Canyon, the journey itself becomes part of the adventure. With panoramic views of towering peaks and the rushing Provo River. Even later in the summer, it isn't uncommon to get views of snow-capped mountain peaks.

Hiking Stewart Falls

Once you arrive at Sundance Resort, head to the chair lift area to access the trailhead for Stewart Falls. Please note that there is a fee for using the chair lift, but it offers a convenient and scenic way to begin your hike. The lift takes you partway up the mountain, reducing the hiking distance and allowing you to start your trek amid breathtaking alpine scenery.

The trail

The Stewart Falls trail is a moderate hike that winds through the forest and wildflower meadows. The approximately 3.5-mile round trip takes you to the spectacular Stewart Falls, a 200-foot cascading waterfall framed by the gorgeous Wasatch Mountains. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a novice adventurer, the trail offers a rewarding experience. With plenty of opportunities to take natural beauty and snap memorable photos. Please note that if snowfall was plentiful during the preceding winter, you must cross water on the trail. The water flow can run fast, therefore, proceed with caution.

Exploring Sundance

After your hike, take some time to explore Sundance Resort itself. Known for its rustic charm and artistic ambiance, Sundance offers adorable boutique shops and dining options that reflect the local culture and creativity. Relax on the patio of the Foundry Grill or enjoy a gourmet meal at the Tree Room. Both of which offer scenic views and delicious cuisine crafted from fresh, local ingredients. Summer evenings include music festivals and full-moon chair lift rides.
