Hoi An, Vietnam, is a city of undeniable charm, where lantern-lit streets and historic shophouses create a storybook atmosphere. The ancient town is a delight to explore, but its popularity means it can also be packed with crowds. I had the privilege of spending three months living in this charming city in 2022, so this guide goes beyond the busiest spots, helping you uncover Hoi An’s quieter corners, local flavors and hidden gems. From peaceful countryside escapes to vibrant markets and cultural experiences, discover how to enjoy a more well-rounded and authentic side of this beloved destination.

Things to do in Hoi An, Vietnam

Sample dozens of street foods

Na and Phuoc of Eat Hoi An offer some of the most authentic and insightful tours of their hometown, and their street food tour is a must-do. While Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City may be more famous for street food, Central Vietnam has its own distinct culinary traditions, and Hoi An’s walkable streets make it the perfect place to savor them. Over the course of an evening, you’ll taste your way through local specialties, gaining a deeper appreciation for the flavors and stories that make Hoi An’s food scene so special.

Visit a local market and cook with what you purchase

If simply tasting Hoi An’s flavors isn’t enough, immerse yourself in the local cuisine with a hands-on cooking class at a charming riverside spot. Your morning begins with a visit to a bustling market, where you’ll select fresh ingredients alongside local vendors. Before stepping into the kitchen, you’ll even try your hand at traditional farming techniques, gaining a deeper appreciation for the journey from field to table.

Explore on two wheels

Hoi An may feel small at first, but hop on a bicycle, and you'll quickly discover there’s so much more beyond the Ancient Town. Ride out to the beach for a seaside escape or – my favorite– wind through peaceful rice paddies, where the scenery changes with the seasons. Along the way, stop for a coffee or a refreshing G&T at a scenic hideaway like Roving Chill House, where you can soak in the slow, rural charm of the countryside.

Try your hand at fashion designing

You can’t visit Hoi An without getting something tailor-made! To make the most of the experience, come prepared with photos of your favorite pieces from stores you like back home — and a little patience. While many tailors offer similar services, Yaly Couture stands out for its efficiency and ability to get things right quickly, making it a top choice if you’re on a short trip.

Laze around in a coffee shop

One of the best things to do in Hoi An? Absolutely nothing. Find a cozy coffee shop, order a rich Vietnamese coffee and let the day unfold at its own pace. With no shortage of charming cafés and delicious brews, it’s the perfect place to slow down, soak in the atmosphere and watch the world go by. Some of my favorite spots are recommended below.

Day trips

Ride the scenic Hai Van Pass

Jump on the back of an easy-rider’s bike for an adventurous day winding through the Hai Van Pass, a stunning coastal route that offers panoramic views of lush mountains, winding roads and crystal-clear beaches. Feel the rush of the wind as you ride through one of Vietnam’s most scenic landscapes, with stops at waterfalls, oyster farms and a beachside restaurant for lunch. On top of escorting you safely through the twists and turns, the drivers/guides on this trip have a fantastic sense of humor and are a joy to be with!

Places to eat & drink in Hoi An, Vietnam

Bánh Mì Phượng

Anthony Bourdain put Madam Phuong on the map when he visited her humble market stall in 2007, calling her bánh mì “a symphony in a sandwich.” Today, she runs a bánh mì empire, drawing crowds from around the world — and deservedly so. Her perfectly crisp baguettes, layered with rich pâté, fresh herbs and flavorful fillings, prove why her shop remains a must-visit in Hoi An.

Nourish Eatery

Nourish Eatery has built a loyal following (particularly among digital nomads) for its fresh, wholesome dishes and relaxed vibe. Known for its nourishing smoothie bowls, vibrant salads and excellent coffee, it’s a go-to spot for those craving a healthy break from Hoi An’s heavier local fare. With its airy, plant-filled space and friendly atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to recharge.

Roving Chillhouse

Roving Chill House is a hidden gem with laid-back vibes and stunning views. Tucked away amid the rice paddies, it’s the perfect spot to relax with a cold drink, whether it’s a refreshing G&T or a locally inspired cocktail. The tranquil setting and scenic surroundings make it an ideal place for a peaceful escape just outside the hustle of the town.

Bánh bèo cô Tú Hẻm

Bánh Bèo Cô Tú Hẻm is a must-visit for anyone wanting to dive into local Hoi An flavors. Tucked away in a narrow alley, this unassuming spot serves up some of the best bánh bèo in town — steamed rice cakes topped with savory shrimp, crispy pork and a drizzle of fish sauce. The dish is a deliciously simple and comforting snack that captures the essence of Hoi An’s street food scene. It’s a local favorite that’s worth seeking out for a true taste of the city’s culinary charm, but the best way to enjoy them is on an Eat Hoi An street food tour.

MUA

If you’re looking for an intimate and elevated dining experience, head here. Known for its modern take on Vietnamese cuisine, MUA combines fresh, local ingredients with creative presentation, delivering a delightful feast for both the eyes and the palate. The cozy atmosphere, complete with stylish décor and attentive service, makes it an ideal spot for a memorable evening out.

Rosie’s

The BEST spot for brunch, and just far enough outside of the central area that it feels like a secret. Everything here is delicious.

Market Bar

Known for its gin infusions, this centrally located spot is the perfect place for an astonishingly well-priced G&T before a ride on a lantern boat. The vibe is cozy, yet vibrant, with a fun view over the market. You can customize your gin and tonic over a dozen ways, and the Belgian-style fries are outstanding + come with your choice of creative, local-inspired dipping sauces.

Mezcal Cockteleria

I’m a sucker for tequila/mezcal and it can be hard to find in Asia. Enter Mezcal Cockteleria.
Visiting here feels more like you’re in a hip, urban city like New York than quaint Hoi An and its dark interiors and innovative cocktails make it the perfect spot for a night cap.
