Things to do in Banff
Things to do in and around Banff:
Shop Downtown Banff. Quaint shops and restaurants abound in this iconic downtown area. Visit the Banff Sweet Shoppe for an afternoon treat and souvenirs to take home to the kids. Immerse yourself in all things Christmas in the two-story Spirit of Christmas store. Stock up on hiking and cold-weather essentials at Patagonia. Grab a coffee and pastry to start your day of shopping at Good Earth Coffeehouse.
Open-Top Tour of Banff. I recommend the Banff Legendary Tour for a chauffeured ride around Banff highlighting the history of the area. There are a few fun surprises throughout the tour as well, but I will let you experience those on your own.
Cave and Basin Tour. Naturalists and curious travelers will enjoy a glimpse at this underground wonder. This is a great family-friendly activity.
Banff Gondola. Jump on the gondola for the best panoramic mountain views around! There are two outstanding restaurants, an educational center, more hiking opportunities, a rooftop deck and gift shops to explore once you get to the top! A must-do finale for every trip to Banff.
Afternoon Tea at the Fairmont Chateau at Lake Louise. Feel like royalty as you experience the amazing views and delectable treats at afternoon tea at the Chateau. You will become so mesmerized by the turquoise blue waters and towering mountains, the waitress might politely have to tell you it's time for other guests to come enjoy your spot.
Hiking around Banff National Park. Select a trail from one of 1,000 miles of options around the park. Be sure to adhere to guidelines and tips, including bear spray and avalanche warnings. You will likely hear the sound of bear bells attached to hiker's backpacks as you explore this gorgeous area. There are walks and hikes for literally all ages and ability levels.
Johnston Canyon will delight those who chase waterfalls! Note: the hike around the waterfall area is completely accessible and family-friendly. Beautiful views! I recommend arriving early morning to catch a glimpse of the sun peeking over the canyon walls. A friendly fox or moose might greet you as well.
Spa Treatments: The Moose Hotel and Suites or Fairmont Banff Springs. Enjoy an afternoon of being pampered at one of these luxurious spas situated in the town of Banff. The Meadow Spa at the Moose Hotel offers a relaxing rooftop hot tub overlooking the downtown area and mountains. A majestic, world-class, 40-,000-square-foot day spa is available at the Fairmont Banff Springs.
Golf at Fairmont Banff Springs: Unwind with a round of golf on this world-renowned course with mountain and waterfall views.
Optional day trips that I recommend around the area:
Visit Lake Louise and Moraine Lake and enjoy hiking trails, canoeing, photography and majestic views. The sunrise tour of these magnificent lakes is a once-in-a-lifetime, must-do event. Trust me!
Places to eat & drink in Banff
There are so many great places to eat and grab a drink around Banff, it's so hard to choose. Here are a few of my personal favorites:
Eddie's Burger Bar. Sample a Canadian favorite, poutine, at this cool and relaxed local burger bar. Grab a few friends and do a shot ski, if you're feeling extra adventurous.
Bluebird. Dine in-house or alfresco at this wood-fired steakhouse in the heart of Banff.
Maple Leaf. Sip on a signature cocktail and dine on delicious Canadian cuisine at The Maple Leaf. Patio dining available in the summertime.
The Grizzly House. Indulge in a fondue feast at this unique and memorable dining experience downtown Banff.
Waldhaus. Cozy up by the fire at this hidden gem nestled in the trees between Bow Falls and the "Castle in the Canadian Rockies".
The Rundle Bar. Wrap up the day at the moody and luxurious Rundle Bar with friends and family, located inside the legendary Fairmont Banff Springs hotel.
Northern Lights Alpine Kitchen. Soak up more panoramic mountain views while dining at this generous buffet. This option at the top of the Banff gondola is a family-friendly restaurant. No one will leave hungry!
Sky Bistro. The best meal I have ever enjoyed in my entire life was prepared by the chefs at the Sky Bistro. The beef short rib is superb! I highly recommend arriving near sunset to enjoy breathtaking views.
