Curator’s statement
Welcome to Lençóis Maranheses, one of the most stunning and unique destinations in Brazil. Located on the coast of the northeast state of Maranhão, Lençóis Maranheses is a national park that covers over 150,000 hectares of white sands and crystal blue lagoons.
The name Lençóis Maranheses translates to "bedsheets of Maranhão," and it's easy to see why. The rolling sand dunes resemble bedsheets, and the lagoons scattered throughout the landscape look like sparkling jewels.
This park is not only visually stunning but also home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, making it a must-visit for nature lovers. But be warned, due to its unique location and geography, the best time to visit is during the rainy season, from February to May, when the lagoons are at their fullest.
With its picturesque landscape and untouched beauty, Lençóis Maranheses is truly a hidden gem of Brazil. We hope you enjoy learning about this breathtaking destination, and we encourage you to add it to your travel bucket list. I consider it an amazing spot to relax and for a new couple to enjoy a honeymoon.

Things to do
The beautiful Lençóis Maranheses in Maranhao is driving distance from the major airport, Sao Luis (SLZ). We highly recommend visiting two cities along the way - Atins and Barreirinha.
Located towards the western coast of Maranhao, Atins offers a tranquil and remote experience for travelers. With its unspoiled beaches and laid-back atmosphere, it's the perfect place to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.
On the other hand, Barreirinha, located towards the eastern coast, is a bustling town known for its local culture and vibrant market scene. It's a great place to immerse yourself in the local way of life and try some delicious regional cuisine.
If you have a bit more time, we also suggest visiting Santo Amaro - another town located near Lençóis Maranheses. It offers stunning views of the surrounding sand dunes and is a great place for outdoor activities such as hiking and sandboarding with its vast stretches of pristine white sand dunes contrasting against crystal clear lagoons.
As most of the tours starts from these cities, it's easy to access Lençóis Maranheses, spending 3-5 nights in those cities. If you want a surreal experience, I recommend staying in Atins, which is 1 hour by speed boat from Barreirinha, the main city.
The first stop will be Lagoa Azul, a picturesque lagoon dotted with small islands and surrounded by towering sand dunes. Here, you can take a refreshing swim in the cool waters or simply relax and take in the breathtaking views.
Next, a visit to Lagoa Bonita, known for its stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. This is the perfect spot to capture some unforgettable photos.
The final stop will be at Lagoa do Peixe, where you can witness a stunning sunset over the dunes and lagoons. The tranquil atmosphere and natural beauty of this place will leave you in awe.
