Curator’s statement

Nestled in the heart of Mexico's central highlands, San Miguel de Allende (SMA) is an enchanting destination that blends old-world charm with a thriving international scene of artists and gastronomic delights. This colonial gem has garnered acclaim for its picturesque cobblestone streets and stunning architecture. What captures my heart about SMA are the beckoning courtyards, bougainvillea-draped arches and the yet-to-be-discovered hidden treasures. My idyllic day wraps up as I savor a mezcal cocktail atop one of the many rooftop bars and cafes, taking in a golden sunset.

Day 1: Arrival

Hotel Courtyard

Experience seamless travel with a private airport transfer to your hotel, allowing you to unwind leisurely after your journey. In the evening, ascend to Luna Rooftop for cocktails, basking in the breathtaking panorama of San Miguel de Allende's beauty. Next, meander through the cobblestone streets into the center of town for your dinner reservation at Quince where you’ll indulge in a creative fusion menu against the backdrop of the iconic pink-spired La Parroquia.

Note: SMA is best discovered on foot, however due to the uneven terrain it may not be the best for those with physical limitations and difficulties with balance or walking. Appropriate footwear is also important, this is not the destination to wear heels or skimpy sandals. White sneaks and flat-soled boots have been the footwear of choice on my visits.

Day 2: Culture & tequila

cathedral

As you venture toward the heart of town to meet your guide for a walking tour of SMA, make a pit stop at Lavanda Cafe for their signature lavender latte to-go (they also have a yummy breakfast menu). Soak in the culture and architecture as your guide takes you on a walking tour around town where the layered cultures of the Indigenous, Spanish, French and current day unfold before you. Finish the tour at a locals favorite for lunch where you’ll sample some of the classic regional dishes. Return to your hotel for a rejuvenating afternoon siesta. As the sun begins to set, indulge in a tequila tasting at Casa Dragones to sample their sought-after small-batch tequilas. For dinner, experience the essence of the local scene at Tostavere or Paprika for live music.

Day 3: Horseback ride & hot springs

cityscape

Prepare for an unforgettable day as your guide collects you from your hotel to drive to a ranch located on the outskirts of town. From there, you'll set-off to adventure through the captivating highland countryside, culminating in a trailside picnic lunch. Following your equestrian escapade, you’ll be driven to La Gruta, to soothe away any sore muscles in the relaxing thermal spring pools. After an adventurous day tonight is perfect to stay-in and explore your hotel’s dining options.

Day 4: Art & local crafts

Antonio Bistro Wine

This morning you’ll be heading to Fabrica La Aurora, a historic textile mill transformed into a hub of art galleries and design boutiques. Should a dose of caffeine be in order, consider Ki'bok coffee, my personal personal favorite or opt for Geek & Coffee, conveniently located just outside the Fabrica entrance. From Fabrica, amble through the Mercado de Artesania market, a treasure trove of locally crafted goods and authentic souvenirs. Upon returning to your hotel, savor an afternoon siesta. Tonight, raise a toast to your final evening with sunset dinner reservations at Antonia Bistro SMA, promising both spectacular vistas and delectable cuisine. Complete the night at BEKEB atop the Casa Hoyos hotel, where innovative mixologists craft contemporary twists of classic Mexican flavors. Should late-night hunger strike, satisfy your cravings with one of the coveted tacos from the beloved Andy's Taco Cart, often found parked around Jardin Allende.

Day 5: Brunch & departure

Streets of San miguel

Begin your day with a stroll beyond the town's hustle and bustle to brunch at Rustica, nestled within a verdant courtyard. If timing allows, treat yourself to a spa massage at your hotel or try the Sense Spa at the Rosewood. A leg and foot massage is sheer bliss after days of exploration. Concluding your journey, a private transfer will collect you from either your hotel or spa, ushering you back to the airport.

Note: If you have a later afternoon/evening flight and your hotel doesn’t allow for a late checkout booking a spa appointment or pool day pass is a great way to spend a relaxing few hours with access to showers/dressing room before catching a flight home.
