Advisor - Stockholm Uncovered: Eat, Shop, Stay and Explore Like a Local
Curator’s statement

For over a year, I had been dreaming of experiencing a Swedish summer. When the opportunity presented itself during a larger trip through Italy and the UK, I couldn’t resist. I booked a spontaneous three-night trip to Stockholm at the end of summer, the city's most enchanting season. The long days, warm light and effortless blend of old-world charm with modern Scandinavian design captivated me instantly. While Stockholm is breathtaking year-round, if you're visiting in winter, I'd recommend heading further north for adventures like seeing the Northern Lights or indulging in a traditional sauna. But for the end of summer, Stockholm was perfection, especially for scouting out hidden gems for my clients. Fun fact: because this trip was last-minute, I only took recommendations from locals (servers and chefs, as well as the kind people I met in coffee shops/stores) to get the local perspective!

Things to do in Stockholm

View of the Grand Hotel Stockholm while on a boat trip.
  • Explore Djurgården Island: Home to some of Stockholm’s most famous museums like the Vasa Museum and Skansen, Djurgården is also a serene place for a walk, run or bike ride. In the summer, take a boat tour around the island and stop at Rosendals Slott for coffee in the garden.

  • Vasa Museum: Quirky and one-of-a-kind, this museum showcases the nearly intact 17th-century warship that sank on its maiden voyage. Located on Djurgården, it's an easy stop while exploring the island’s other attractions.

  • Stroll in Södermalm: Södermalm is Stockholm's hipster neighborhood, full of slow fashion shops, cool cafés and bars and local design stores. Start your journey on Hornsgatan, one of the main streets, and don’t be afraid to wander from there, taking a Fika or stopping for a beverage with the local, after-work crowd.

  • Vintage shopping in Stockholm: For the best vintage pieces, head to Judits Second Hand for curated high/low vintage finds, Myrorna for quirky homeware, Acne Archive for hard-to-find Swedish fashion, Arkivet for modern second-hand fashion pieces and Stockholms Stadsmission Second Hand if you don’t mind digging through treasures at a lower price point.

  • Home goods and design: If you love Scandinavian design, Svenskt Tenn is iconic for home goods, while G.A.D Stockholm offers an upscale, more off-the-radar experience. For pottery, check out Kaolin, a women-owned art gallery featuring rotating ceramicists.

  • Spa day: Treat yourself to relaxation at The Nest rooftop spa at Downtown Camper by Scandic, or visit one of the many hotel spas. These are perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring.

  • Nobel Prize Museum: Located in the heart of Gamla Stan, this museum highlights the history and impact of the Nobel Prize. The interactive exhibits are informative and engaging.

  • Walking and boat tour of Stockholm: Combine the best of land and water by taking a guided walking tour through Gamla Stan. Followed by a scenic 45-minute boat tour of the city’s iconic waterfront views and nearby islands. It’s a great way to immerse yourself in Stockholm’s history and culture.

Day trip

Take a boat trip to the Stockholm Archipelago for a peaceful escape from the city. Vaxholm is a popular choice, offering charming streets, waterside cafés and a lively atmosphere. For a quieter experience, head to Sandhamn, a more secluded island known for its serene beaches and nature trails. Both destinations provide a beautiful glimpse into Sweden’s coastal beauty and are easily accessible by boat.

  • Store Bageriet: The perfect spot for a traditional Swedish Fika in Östermalm, featuring to-die-for cinnamon buns and excellent coffee.

  • Operabaren: One of Stockholm's most iconic restaurants. A historic and upscale spot for traditional Swedish fare in a beautiful setting.

  • Rost: This local pizza joint in Södermalm is a true insider's find. It’s casual, friendly and a perfect spot to experience Stockholm’s hipster scene without the tourists.

  • Tyge & Sessil: A local wine bar with great energy and a carefully curated selection of snacks. It’s a lively spot, recommended by locals for its fun, laid-back vibe.

  • Östermalm Food Hall: A must-visit for food lovers, this historic market is filled with gourmet vendors. Take a food tour to sample a variety of Swedish specialties, or grab lunch at one of the stalls.

  • Savant Bar: A hidden wine bar just outside the main tourist areas. It’s a true local haunt with an excellent selection of natural wines.

  • Restaurant Triton: Recommended by the chef at Ett Hem, this elevated dining experience features creative dishes and thoughtful wine pairings, without the Michelin-starred price tag.

  • Pharmarium: A chic cocktail bar located in Gamla Stan, where old-world charm meets modern mixology. The atmosphere is unique, and the drinks are expertly crafted.

  • Lucy’s Flower Shop: This speakeasy-style bar is an insider favorite, known for its creative cocktails and intimate setting. It’s a bit hidden, but worth the effort to find!
