Curator’s statement

Years ago, if you asked me where I would go on my honeymoon, Sri Lanka was definitely not a destination that came to mind, however, after spending five nights there on our honeymoon (combined with Dubai & the Maldives), I can't imagine it any other way. We quickly realized five nights wasn't nearly enough time, but we were still able to get a taste of tea country, a beach safari experience and a beach resort stay.

Where to stay

Day 1: Arrive in Colombo, Sri Lanka

Seaplane parked at a dock with a mountain in the background.

Arrive in Colombo, Sri Lanka and use Fast Track services to escort you to your seaplane to tea country. You'll fly over the most beautiful scenic mountains and arrive in Hatton, followed by a drive to your bungalow at Ceylon Tea Trails (we stayed at the Norwood bungalow). Once you're settled in, you can explore the property, enjoy a multi-course lunch and sit by the pool (depending on which bungalow you stay at), play croquet or other activities and relax. Enjoy a traditional Sri Lankan tea time, spend the early evening at your leisure and have dinner outside by the fire.

Day 2: Tour the Tea Factory at Dunkeld

Spend the morning touring the tea factory at Dunkeld, watch the tea-making process, learn about the health benefits of various teas and of course, sample some tea. Definitely buy some to bring back home! Following the tour, enjoy lunch at a different bungalow. Return to your bungalow for afternoon tea time, wine/cocktails and a traditional Sri Lankan dinner.

Day 3: Hike to Castlereagh

A woman in a red life-vest paddling a yellow kayak on a river with dirt banks on either side.

Wake up to a delicious al-fresco breakfast outside your room, followed by a hike with the resident naturalist on the property. You can hike to Castlereagh, another bungalow, where we kayaked and had lunch. We then took a boat ride to the Summerville bungalow and were driven to the Kovil (temple) for our "blessing ceremony," specially arranged by the team at our bungalow. It was definitely a unique experience that I will never forget!

Day 4: Arrive at Wild Coast Tented Lodge

View from a plane over Yala National Park which is full of lush greenery and watering holes.

After a delicious breakfast, we took a five-and-a-half-hour bumpy drive through many unpaved, winding roads and finally arrived at Wild Coast Tented Lodge at Yala National Park. It was definitely worth the ride, however, I would strongly suggest the flight if you can, especially if you get car sick! The rooms here are these incredibly luxurious tents and one of the most unique places I've ever stayed. We went out on a safari drive later that afternoon, followed by sundowners on the beach and a "romantic" menu for dinner.

Day 5: Enjoy Breakfast By the Beach

Enjoy breakfast by the beach while monkeys and other wildlife roam around the property around you. There's an amazing pool, basically on the beach, and after having lunch you go for another safari drive. If you're lucky, you'll see leopards, giraffes, baby elephants and more. The accommodations and experience here are so unique, but two nights is probably enough time if that's all you have.

Additional days

A breakfast spread with bread, jam, butter, pastries and cereals set out on a table.

Day 6:
You'll take a 2.5 drive to the southern most part of Sri Lanka and arrive at Cape Weligama, a luxury clifftop resort that is the perfect slice of paradise. You can grab drinks at Surf Barn and go for a swim at Moon Pool. Have the hotel arrange a guided tour of the Galle fort and town, followed by sunset at Minke lookout and dinner at Ocean Terrace at the resort.

Day 7:
Depart for your next stop, which is hopefully the Maldives (90 min flight to Male!)
