Curator’s statement
A ski trip is an amazing family vacation, offering memorable bonding moments and fun for everyone. I cherish my childhood ski trips, so when it was time for our daughters' first trip out west, we chose Vail. Vail is perfect for family skiing with its exceptional slopes, top-notch instruction, charming pedestrian village, diverse accommodations, fantastic food and hassle-free logistics (which we all know can make or break a family vacation!).

Things to do in Vail, Colorado
Vail is the ideal first (or anytime!) family ski trip destination. It offers world-class skiing and instruction, reliable snow conditions, and easy access from nearby airports.
Vail is perfect for families because it offers a wide variety of terrain on one massive mountain. It caters to all skill levels, from beginner bunny slopes to its legendary back bowls. This allows family members with different abilities to enjoy the same mountain, unlike some other resorts.
The pedestrian-only, European-style village lies right at the base of the mountain. It boasts charming shops, excellent dining and a wide range of accommodation, making it easy for families to navigate and access the slopes. Older kids and teens can explore the village independently and safely, adding to the convenience and appeal.
Vail offers plenty of activities to entertain the family beyond skiing, perfect for a day off the slopes or for non-skiers. Here are my top recommendations for non-skiing activities in Vail Village.
Bowling at Bol - This is an upscale bowling alley right in the center of the village where you can also enjoy a meal or cocktails and meet up with friends.
Ice Skating in Solaris Plaza - If your kids have energy to burn, you can rent ice skates right in the center of Vail Village for a spin around the rink.
Arcade at the Rabbit Hole - This is a cool modern arcade, conveniently located in Solaris Plaza in the center of the village.
Spa - If you can find time for some self-care while your kids are in ski school, enjoy the services at the lovely spas located in the Four Seasons or The Hythe in nearby Lion’s Head.
Beyond Vail Village, I highly recommend exploring these fun winter activities:
Snow mobiling - This is a unique and super fun activity for the family that gets you out in the fresh mountain air to see another part of the gorgeous surroundings. Pick-up / drop-off at your hotel is provided.
Snow shoeing - Perfect for a day off or for those not as interested in thrill-seeking, these tours can be a more relaxing way to experience the alpine landscape. Pick-up / drop-off at your hotel is provided.
Snow tubing at Copper Mountain - This is always a kid-friendly favorite and is a short 20-minute drive from Vail.
Day Trips:
Looking to explore beyond Vail? Just a 30-minute drive away, Beaver Creek is also great for families, especially those with young children. This smaller mountain resort offers ski-in/ski-out properties, impeccably maintained slopes, and shares ski passes and instructors with Vail for seamless skiing adventures.
Places to eat & drink in Vail, Colorado
After a day of skiing, my family loves indulging in comfort food or a cozy meal together. We definitely don’t compromise on quality just because we have the kids with us. Vail offers so many fantastic dining options, from affordable pizzerias to fine dining. During busy seasons, it's wise to make reservations in advance. Here are my favorite spots for a great family meal.
Mountain Standard - A delicious American Gastro pub. It is open all day for lunch and dinner and is super popular, so book in advance.
La Nonna - An elegant, authentic Italian experience. Best for families with older kids and teens.
La Bottega - Authentic Italian food in a casual atmosphere, better for families with young kids.
Matsuhisa - Excellent sushi and Japanese cuisine from acclaimed chef Nobu Matsuhisa in a lively and unpretentious atmosphere.
Almresi - This is a unique European/Alpine experience with raclette and fondue.
Think aprés ski isn't for kids? Think again! Vail boasts family-friendly spots perfect for post-slope snacks. Alpenrose and Almresi are hits for their giant soft pretzels and hot chocolate, perfect for recharging after a day on the mountain. For nachos and drinks, check out The Red Lion and Los Amigos, which feature outdoor patios for relaxing after spring skiing. Satisfy your kids' sweet tooth at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory or Fuzziwigs, for an old-school candy store experience.
Need to know
Pro Tip: Planning ahead is key for a successful family ski trip, especially if it's your first one! Do these five things in advance of your trip to Vail:
Accommodations - Assess your family's needs for this particular kind of trip. Consider distance from the mountain, meal arrangements after skiing and desired amenities like laundry, a pool, or ski lockers. Storing your gear at the mountain base is especially convenient.
Lift Tickets - Purchase lift tickets or Epic passes online in advance for discounts and convenience. Epic passes serve as mobile lift tickets and can offer dining discounts, plus access to multiple resorts.
Gear Rental - Rent gear in advance and complete forms online to save time. If you arrive before 4pm the day before skiing, try your gear on to guarantee a smooth first morning, especially for young kids.
Airport Transfers - Book airport transfers ahead of time. Eagle County Airport is 30 minutes from Vail. You don't need a car in Vail, but consider transfer costs if flying in/out of Denver.
Epic Mix App - Download Vail's Epic Mix app for lift tickets, trail maps, grooming reports, and tracking.
