Curator’s statement
In 2019, the morning after I got engaged at one of our favorite parks in NYC, my then-fiancé told me to pack a suitcase because we were going on a weekend getaway to Bermuda that evening. To say I was surprised was an understatement, and ever since this trip has been dubbed our “engagementmoon” by friends and family members who have employed the same plan. Who says celebratory trips have to be reserved for babymoons and honeymoons?! After a more recent visit in July of 2024, I realized just how much this island offers for repeat visitors and knew I had to share our itinerary.
Bermuda, an island paradise, is a more realistic weekend getaway than you think. It is just a 90-minute flight from JFK and offers direct flights from major airports along the East Coast, which means it is perfect for celebratory trips, quick getaways or even family trips where you can avoid the dreaded long-haul flights and layovers. For first-time visitors, you can get a great sense of the place in just 2–3 days, and for those who have been here many times, read on for some of the latest and greatest discoveries from our recent trip.

Day 1: Arrive in Bermuda
Arrive in Bermuda and check into The Reefs Hotel. Spend the afternoon unwinding on the sand beaches, swimming in the turquoise waters or snorkeling to explore the vibrant marine life. For lunch, enjoy a leisurely meal at the hotel's waterfront restaurant, which offers delicious seafood (a Rum Swizzle and the catch of the day fish tacos are a great choice) and stunning ocean views. After lunch, take advantage of the hotel's amenities by relaxing by the pool, indulging in a spa treatment or taking the complimentary paddleboards, snorkel gear or sea kayaks out for a spin. In the evening, head back down to the beach for the weekly Thursday night BBQ by Coconuts or opt for a more upscale dinner with ocean views at AquaTerra.
Day 2: Sight Seeing
Start your day with the hotel breakfast and then venture across the road to Oleander’s to pick up your rental mini electric car to explore Bermuda. Visitors cannot rent normal cars, only mini cars and scooters. Here are some ideas for sights to see:
- St. George's, a quaint village and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore its narrow streets, historic buildings and hidden alleys.
- Tobacco Bay Beach: a serene and less crowded experience.
- Jobson's Cove: a beautiful and secluded beach with calm water, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. It is located about a 15-minute drive from The Reefs.
- Spittal Pond Nature Reserve: a 64-acre wildlife sanctuary with a winding trail that leads to spectacular coastal views. While not a beach for swimming, it is a great place to go for a short hike and enjoy the scenery.
Crystal Caves: Take a guided tour of these dramatic underground caves with lit pools and large stalactites. If you'd like to see this popular attraction, allow 1–2 hours.
The town of Hamilton: Go for lunch — enjoy a meal at a local favorite like The Pickled Onion or 1609, which both offer views of Hamilton Harbor. After lunch, stroll through Hamilton to explore the local shops, galleries and markets or visit the Bermuda National Gallery or the Hamilton Princess Hotel's art collection for a dose of culture.
Head back to The Reefs in the mid-afternoon to relax and freshen up. In the evening, take a short taxi to Blu Bar & Grill (~10 min taxi), taking in the sunset and savoring culinary delights.
Day 3: Final Evening
Take today at your own pace. Spend the morning and afternoon enjoying more of The Reefs' amenities and nearby area. Perhaps play tennis or pickleball, go for another swim, take a kayak out onto the water or just take it easy. You could also consider visiting the nearby Gibbs Hill Lighthouse for the best panoramic island views.
For your final evening, take a taxi to the Rosewood Bermuda property for cocktail hour and live music at the Conservatory Bar. Then hop on the free shuttle to dinner at Sul Verde for an exquisite Italian in a charming setting overlooking the golf course and ocean for sunset.
Day 4: Departure
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, or perhaps a final swim and head to the airport!
Need to know
Important Notes for Travelers:
- Bermuda has a brand new airport (opened in early 2021) with nonstop flights from several major and local airports along the East Coast. You also clear customs before departure, which means no waiting in long customs lines upon your return to the US.
- Taxi, bus and scooter or mini-electric car rentals are the most common modes of transportation. Taxis and rentals should be secured in advance due to limited availability.
- Bermuda is effectively off the coast of (similar latitude to) South Carolina, so the best time to go is in the summer when the ocean will be swimmable temperatures, though you can go in Spring or Fall and focus on pool and island activities with warm weather.
- Bermuda Day (May), Cup Match (July), Carnival (June), Easter (April), Christmas and Boxing Day (December) are some of their biggest holidays, so plan travel accordingly.
