Advisor - A Tour of Scotland
Curator’s statement

I visited the beautiful country of Scotland in 2022, and fell in love with the landscape, people and history. The best-selling novel and hit Starz series Outlander helped out, too. This itinerary guides you from Edinburgh to the Highlands, with iconic stops along the way.

Day 1: Arrive in Edinburgh

New-Town-Edinburgh-travel-guide

Check into your hotel and head out to explore the Royal Mile. Visit St. Giles' Cathedral and enjoy lunch at a local pub. This is a great area to get quality souvenirs like cashmere scarves and Scottish plaids. Head up to Edinburgh Castle to spend the evening soaking up views of the city and learning about Scottish history. Learn about Scottish whisky at the Scotch Whisky Experience.

Day 2: Edinburgh

Edinburgh-Castle-Edinburgh-travel-guide

Enjoy a traditional Scottish breakfast at your hotel before setting off on an Outlander-themed tour from Edinburgh. Stop by famous filming sites and learn the true history of the locations. Back in Edinburgh, wander through New Town and the Princes Street Gardens. Try a unique speakeasy for quality drinks and cool vibes at Panda & Sons.

Day 3: Inverness

From Edinburgh, take a scenic train ride through the Scottish countryside to the gateway to the Highlands: Inverness. Explore the quaint town and enjoy dinner at the Castle Tavern. Be sure to find some hairy cows around town – they're basically the mascot of the Highlands.

Day 4: Inverness

There is a lot to see around the Highlands, and the best way to fit it all in is through a guided tour. Take an Outlander tour of the Highlands to see important sites of Scottish history, including the Culloden battlefield, the Clava Cairns (which inspired the stone that transported Claire through time) and the famous Loch Ness.

Day 5: Fort William

Urqhart-Castle-scotland-travel-guide

From Inverness, head south to Fort William – the backdrop of some of Outlander's most intense moments. Explore the historic fort, then travel to Glenfinnan to see the iconic viaduct featured in several movies and shows (namely, Harry Potter's Hogwarts Express.) Stay in Fort Williams at the Inverlochy Castle for a fairytale stay, or head further south to Glencoe and stay among the rolling mountains at Glencoe House.

Day 6: Loch Lomond

Enjoy your last morning in the Highlands before departing for another gloriously beautiful location. Just outside of Glasgow, the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond are famous for their serene, glassy waters, numerous walking and hiking trails and a handful of small villages to stop in and enjoy. Try walking one of their trails or paddle across the water to one of the islands that rise out of the water. For a magical stay, look no further than Cameron House on Loch Lomond – a sprawling estate with views of the lake. Or, after your time on the lake, head into Glasgow for a taste of university life.
