Things to do in Portland, Oregon

Explore the best of Portland with these amazing family-friendly activities. Start with iconic local attractions like Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI). It is a treasure trove of rotating exhibits and hands-on science activities that are perfect for kids and adults alike. Highlights include an Imax theater, a planetarium and a special playground for younger children. Hopscotch, a newer addition to Portland’s scene, playfully combines art installations, a playground and a chic hangout vibe into one vibrant space. It's perfect for a fun outing, but don’t forget to book tickets online in advance. Another exciting option is Fathom, an underwater-themed experience that takes visitors on a scavenger hunt through stunning interactive art.

If the weather is on your side, outdoor adventures abound. The Oregon Zoo is always a family favorite. It offers the chance to see amazing animals, ride the charming carousel and hop aboard the famous zoo train for a memorable afternoon. For a unique perspective of the city, take a ride on the Portland Aerial Tram, which connects the South Waterfront to OHSU and offers sweeping views of the skyline.

Portland’s parks are another highlight for families. Gabriel Park, with its open fields, basketball courts and large play structure, is a fantastic spot for kids to run and play. Close to the Oregon Zoo, you’ll find the Rose Garden and Forest Park, two stunning escapes into nature with fragrant blooms, peaceful walking trails and breathtaking scenery. In the summer, splash pads like Jamison Square in the Pearl District are perfect for cooling off while enjoying the city’s lively atmosphere.

If the weather turns gray, Portland still has plenty to offer. Dig, a sand-focused indoor playground, provides a unique and engaging experience for kids to unleash their creativity. There are also plenty of indoor play cafés and activity centers designed to keep little ones entertained while adults take a break.

When it’s time to grab a bite or shop, Portland’s markets are a must-visit. The Portland State Farmers Market is perfect for sampling fresh local produce, enjoying delicious snacks or finding unique gifts. Meanwhile, the famous Portland Saturday Market along the river offers a delightful mix of handmade crafts, local art and incredible street food.

Portland truly shines as a family-friendly destination, with something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you’re exploring science, diving into art or soaking in the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, this city promises unforgettable experiences for all ages.

Places to eat & drink in Portland, Oregon

Breakfast & brunch

Portland is a city that truly knows how to eat, and its food scene can feel almost overwhelming in the best way possible! Breakfast and brunch are definitely my favorite meals here, and Portland does them exceptionally well. Pine State Biscuits, with locations throughout the city, serves up fantastic breakfast sandwiches and buttery, flaky biscuits smothered in rich, flavorful gravy — comfort food perfection.

For a classic and timeless experience, head to The Original Pancake House just outside downtown. This is the very first location of the now-famous chain, and it’s worth the short trip. The portions are generous, the service is top-notch and their fresh fruit-topped pancakes are unbeatable. Speaking of pancakes, a particularly fun option for families is Slappy Cakes, where you get to choose your batter and make pancakes right at your table. Kids (and adults!) will love creating different shapes before digging into their delicious creations.

Another standout for breakfast or brunch is Screen Door, a newer addition to downtown. Their Southern comfort food is perfect for fueling a day of exploring — plus, it’s just steps from Powell’s Books, Portland’s iconic bookstore with a fantastic children’s section.

Lunch & dinner

When it comes to lunch and dinner, Portland has an amazing variety of kid-friendly options. Grassa is a favorite, serving freshly made noodles in chic but laid-back spaces that are perfect for families. For something a bit more adventurous, Bollywood Theater offers Indian street food dishes in a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere. It offers shareable plates and bold flavors that everyone will enjoy.

Pizza is a big deal in Portland, and Baby Doll Pizza stands out with its New York-style slices that are as big as they are delicious. If you can snag a babysitter for a night out, Janken in downtown Portland has been winning me over lately with its upscale, Asian-inspired cuisine. It’s a fantastic choice for a date night.

Dessert

Of course, no trip to Portland would be complete without dessert! This city is home to some of the best bakeries and donut shops around. Voodoo Doughnut may be the most famous, and it’s worth visiting for its whimsical creations and iconic vibe. For unique and elevated flavors, Blue Star Donuts and Doe Donuts never disappoint. If ice cream is your weakness, Salt & Straw is a must. This Portland original has expanded far and wide but still delivers on its inventive flavors and freshly made waffle cones. And if pie is your thing, make sure to visit Lauretta Jean’s — everything in their pie case is pure heaven, from tangy fruit pies to rich cream-filled delights.

Portland’s food scene is as diverse as it is delicious, offering something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a fun family outing or an indulgent date night, this city delivers on all fronts.
