Things to do in Tampa Bay

  • Catch a game in Champa Bay: Lovingly nicknamed “Champa Bay,” Tampa is home to the NHL’s Lightning, the NFL’s Buccaneers and the MLB’s Rays. Locals go crazy about their teams, making it a must-do no matter your sport of choice.

  • Bike along the riverwalk and historic Bayshore Boulevard: Rent a beach cruiser and start your journey at Armature Works, biking along the 2.6 miles of scenic river. Take a detour through the charming Bayshore Beautiful neighborhood and don’t forget to look out for dolphins. End your ride with sangria and tapas at The Columbia Café.

  • Explore the Hillsborough River: Whether you choose an e-boat, stand-up paddle board or water taxi, seeing Tampa from the water is a must. For a more adventurous experience, book a spot on the Kraken Cycle Boat. Or, for those wanting to explore beyond the river, take the ferry from downtown Tampa to St. Petersburg.

  • Shop and dine in Hyde Park: Hyde Park offers a mix of boutiques and fine dining experiences. Visit in the morning for local markets and brunch at Meat Market, or come in the evening for dinner and drinks. There’s something for everyone in this charming neighborhood.

  • Visit the Oxford Exchange: One of Tampa’s most stunning buildings, the Oxford Exchange features a library, boutique, coffee and tea bar, brunch spot and champagne bar. Whether you’re dropping by for a quick drink or booking a bubbly brunch in their sunlit conservatory, it’s an experience not to be missed.

  • Experience Armature Works: More than just a food hall, Armature Works is a vibrant hub for food, music, culture and community. Housed in a former streetcar warehouse, this space boasts over 15 food and drink vendors, plus two full-service restaurants. Head upstairs to M. Bird, a chic rooftop bar known for its espresso martinis. The lawn offers views, activities and community events — be sure to check their public calendar before arrival. Yoga on the lawn is a favorite.

  • Take the trolley to Ybor City: The streetcars are a nod to Tampa’s history and are free to use within the city’s inner circle. Enjoy a leisurely ride to Ybor City, where the streets reflect the Cuban, Italian and Spanish influences of the area’s early immigrants. Don’t miss Parque Amigos de Jose Marti, the last of the Cuban-owned land in Florida. While Ybor City is known for its vibrant nightlife, those seeking a slower pace with a focus on history and culture will enjoy visiting during the day.

  • Smoke a stogie at Grand Cathedral Cigars: Tampa’s deep Cuban roots are evident in its cigar culture. While there are plenty of cigar shops in Ybor City, Grand Cathedral Cigars offers a unique experience. Set inside a historic cathedral, this venue displays an impressive selection of authentic Cuban cigars. Even if you’re not a cigar smoker, the Cathedral is worth a visit for its atmosphere and its selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Day trips:

  • St. Pete Beach: For those wanting a day in the sun, take a drive over the bridge to St. Petersburg. Day passes for the Don Cesar are recommended for those wanting beachside service and a taste of the pink palace.

  • Busch Gardens Tampa Bay: Located on the outskirts of the city, spend the day riding roller coasters and enjoying animal exhibits.

Places to eat & drink in Tampa Bay

Two cocktails rest on a railing with a city skyline and water in the background under a blue sky.
  • Timpano: Located in Hyde Park, Timpano makes you feel like you’re stepping into the Italian countryside. The pasta dishes will always be my go-to here. Order the Parm-to-Table experience for Instagram-envy from your friends.

  • The Gin Joint: Take a step back in time with The Gin Joint. Located next to the old Tampa Theater, guests will feel as if they are entering a 1920s Jazz Club with a perfectly curated menu. Expect live jazz and swing music on the weekends.

  • Ulele: A fusion restaurant with something for everyone. Check out their oyster bar and take a frose’ to go!

  • Wagamama: Make a reservation and order the grilled duck ramen.

  • Bar Taco: Perfect for a more casual dining experience, be sure to order a spicy margarita with your meal.

  • The Colombia Cafe: The tapas version of the infamous Colombia, this is a must for sangria and seafood towers on the river.

  • Willa’s Provisions: My favorite place for brunch. Where there’s a Willa’s, there’s a way.

  • The Champagne Bar: Located inside the Oxford Exchange, this is a must for a lover of champagne cocktails and maximalist decor.

  • M.Bird: A must for those who love cocktails with a rooftop view.

  • Copper Shaker: Whether you’re looking for a classic cocktail or something innovative, The Copper Shaker is bound to have it.

Need to know

I would highly recommend visiting during September and October. Tampa has some of the best Halloween and Fall activities such as Howl-O-Scream, Oktoberfest at Curtis Hixon Park and a pumpkin patch on the water at Armature Works. It is also prime time for sports and concerts.

For those looking to experience Tampa traditions, January and February feature the Gasparilla pirate parade, the Gasparilla races (5k, 10k, half-marathon and marathon) and local concert series. This is also an ideal time for those who are not used to the heat and humidity of Florida.
