Upon arrival at the Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach, you’re welcomed by a large courtyard with an ornate fountain and portico. The front desk gives each guest the rundown of their specific perks, and the property's amenities along with a site map.

The rooms

There are a variety of rooms at the resort, ranging from garden to ocean views, some with balconies and others with ground-floor patios. I opted for a patio room with a private outdoor firepit — this was the move. I was welcomed with a “fire pit amenity”, which included a s’mores kit, cozy blanket, macarons and a bottle of cabernet. The rooms are comfortably equipped with a large bathroom, cozy king or double queen beds, desk and lounge area.

Food and beverage

I had planned to venture to nearby Laguna Beach and Newport for most meals — that was until I was introduced to the many options I had on property. The hotel features the Orange County outpost of Bourbon Steak for an upscale steakhouse experience. The stunning lobby bar, coined 33 North, includes a small menu of bites directly from the steakhouse kitchen. It also features outdoor fire pits with sweeping views of the Pacific. Aveo Table and Bar, along with multiple poolside restaurants, offer a more casual experience.

All that said, the crown jewel of this property is the Monarch Bay Beach Club. Guests can head to the lobby to take the charming Waldorf Astoria tram down to the beach club. The club functions as a bar and restaurant, complete with lounge, standard table, bar and outdoor seating. It overlooks both the lawn, complete with fire pits and adirondack chairs, and the gorgeous beach. It’s easy to head down for a quick bite and find yourself lingering for hours. Access is exclusive only to members and hotel guests.

Amenities

The resort features an expansive spa. It is complete with a relaxation lounge overlooking the sea, a secluded pool and a fully appointed gym and fitness studio. The golf course was designed “Scottish links style” and is complete with locker room facilities and driving bays. If being poolside is more your style, the property includes two main pools with spas, private cabanas and dining.

During my visit, I encountered a wide breadth of visitors, all enjoying the luxurious property in harmony. Families with small children, business and leisure travelers and members of the private Monarch Bay Beach Club.

Need to know

Exclusive amenities: Staying at this property is nearly worth it just for the access to the private Monarch Bay Beach Club, which is truly the highlight of the resort.

Something for everyone: From young families to business travelers and everything in between, there is always something to do and somewhere to be.

Convenient location: Just 30 minutes from John Wayne Airport is a quiet, beachside resort with easy access to popular destinations like Newport and Laguna Beach.
