Where to stay on St. Maarten

The JW Marriott St. Maarten Beach Resort and Spa offers a secluded retreat on one of the island’s most breathtaking coastlines. Located on Dawn Beach, this newly opened resort (March 2024) blends luxury with serene beachfront beauty. This makes it an ideal destination for travelers seeking relaxation, wellness and rejuvenation.

For those looking to unwind, the resort’s spa, fitness center and oceanfront pool provide the perfect balance of wellness and leisure. The spacious guest rooms and suites are elegantly designed. Many feature private balconies with stunning views of the Caribbean Sea or even glimpses of neighboring St. Barts.

It’s important to note that this resort is in a more remote part of St. Maarten, which enhances the peacefulness but limits immediate access to the island’s vibrant nightlife, bars and restaurants. While taxis are available, guests looking to explore may find the location a bit isolated. However, for a two-day retreat focused on relaxation, I found the property’s amenities more than sufficient, though I did hear other guests mention the lack of nearby activities.

Pools & Cabanas

The resort features two pools, including an infinity pool. The second pool has a swim-up bar and offers a lively yet relaxed atmosphere. Lounge chairs are plentiful, with options for both sun and shade, while private cabanas are available for rent. While towels are readily accessible, the service around the pool is more self-serve.

Spa & Wellness

The JW Marriott Spa provides a tranquil setting with a selection of massages, body treatments and skin care services designed for ultimate relaxation. Though prices are on the higher end, it's aligned with what you’d expect from a luxury Caribbean resort. The fitness center is well-equipped with modern machines and weights. Weekly activities such as yoga, Zumba and painting classes add to the resort’s wellness offerings.

Dining & Bars

This property offers two restaurants and multiple bars.

Carambola: The resort’s main restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner in both indoor and outdoor. Guests lounging by the pool can also order from Carambola’s menu.

Liguria: A specialty dining experience offering flavors inspired by Mediterranean cuisine.

Lobby Bar: A sophisticated spot for enjoying a late-night cocktails.

Pool Bar: A lively place where guests can enjoy drinks by the pool or directly on the beach.

JW Cooking School & Kids Club

For those looking for an interactive experience, the JW Cooking School offers guests the opportunity to take part in unique culinary workshops and enriching hands-on cooking classes. Families traveling with children will appreciate the Kids Club, an indoor playroom designed to keep little ones entertained throughout the day.

Shops & essentials

The resort offers a small market on the ground floor where guests can pick up coffee, water and snacks, as well as a boutique selling swimwear, sunscreen, hats and souvenirs.

Overall, the JW Marriott St. Maarten is a fantastic choice for romantic getaways, solo travelers, wellness seekers and those looking for a high-end, all-encompassing resort experience. If your goal is to immerse yourself in the island’s lively culture and dining scene, you may want to consider staying closer to Simpson Bay or Grand Case. But if luxury, privacy and breathtaking ocean views are what you’re after, this resort is a dream come true.
