Site Inspection at Pera Palace Hotel in Istanbul, Türkiye
Curator’s statement

The Pera Palace in Istanbul has my deep respect due to its rich history, having hosted luminaries like Agatha Christie and Atatürk since 1892. Its prime location in the heart of the city offers stunning views of the Golden Horn, combining elegance with a deep sense of tradition. The hotel's multiple seating areas, whether in its ornate lounge or serene terrace, provide perfect spaces for quiet contemplation. Each corner of the Pera Palace feels infused with stories, making it a timeless retreat for reflection.

The Pera Palace Hotel in Istanbul is a historical gem, embodying over a century of elegance and tradition. Built in 1892 to host passengers of the famed Orient Express, it offered luxury to travelers from Europe arriving in the exotic East. Situated in the vibrant Beyoğlu district, the hotel boasts an impeccable view of the Golden Horn and quickly became a symbol of glamor in the Ottoman Empire. Among its many technological marvels is Tükiye's first electric elevator, which, remarkably, is still operational today, carrying guests in vintage style up and down its storied floors. Adding to the nostalgic charm, each floor of the hotel is equipped with traditional rotary dial house phones, a small but striking detail that connects visitors to the hotel’s rich past.

The hotel’s halls have seen the footsteps of numerous legendary writers, who have found inspiration within its walls. Agatha Christie, perhaps the most famous of all, is said to have written part of her novel Murder on the Orient Express while staying at the Pera Palace. Other literary figures, such as Ernest Hemingway, also spent time at the hotel, soaking in the rich atmosphere of this cultural hub, which provided them a tranquil retreat from the bustling world outside. The hotel’s legacy as a haven for intellectuals and artists continues to add to its allure, offering an environment where history and creativity merge.

In addition to its illustrious guests, the architecture of the Pera Palace is equally captivating. The main hall features majestic domes that can open, allowing fresh air to fill the space — a unique feature that reflects both luxury and thoughtful design. These details, along with the blend of neo-classical, oriental and art nouveau styles, create an enchanting ambiance that transports visitors back in time. The grandiosity of the interior is further enhanced by opulent chandeliers, marble columns and intricate mosaics that tell stories of a bygone era.

No visit to the Pera Palace is complete without indulging in its exquisite French patisserie. Offering a delightful array of pastries, desserts and fine teas, it is a perfect place to relax and enjoy the elegance of the hotel in a more casual setting.

Need to know

The Pera Palace Hotel is located in the historic Pera neighborhood, a flatter area of Istanbul compared to the nearby hills of Galata, yet still within easy walking distance of its vibrant streets and landmarks. This makes it an ideal choice for travelers who want to explore the city on foot while avoiding the steeper climbs around Galata Tower. The hotel offers a luxurious, elegant experience steeped in history, but remains affordable for most vacation budgets, making it perfect for those seeking a touch of sophistication without breaking the bank.
