Curator’s statement
I can't count the number of layovers I have had at Chicago O'Hare, but decided to finally extend one a couple of days to allow a short visit to Chicago. I chose three hotels to visit: one at a moderate rate in a great touristic area, one high-end gem and the third closer to some of the nicer residential areas of the city. All had much to offer.

A visit to Chicago should be on everyone's list. The Architectural Boat Tour of the city is a must-do. Choosing a hotel here may be almost as difficult as choosing your favorite building, as there are so many gems from which to choose.
Need to know
If you're budget-minded, but still like a classically good hotel with excellent service, choose the Fairmont Millennial Park. Walk to parks, restaurants and of course, The Bean. Affordable rooms with great views of the Park. Although many of the restaurants and shopping are no longer centered in this area, it is still a great location for tourists. Rooms are comfortable and clean. The downside is that it feels a bit crowded here, with minimal communal spaces and many large groups. The service is still quite good.
If luxury is your thing, along with cleanliness and attentive service, choose The Langham Chicago. All of the rooms boast the same high-end furniture and finishes, but vary in size and views. Club access can be added to any reservation, and allows for a very relaxed experience for grabbing breakfast, snack or a drink. Langham knows how to serve Afternoon tea, which can also be found in the Club. The rooms feature beautiful bathrooms with views to the room and beyond. If this is not your vibe, a switch will easily turn the glass opaque. The hotel is close to many of Chicago's finest dining establishments, in addition to shopping. If you find yourself in Chicago when the weather is not great for going out, there is a media room available to watch a movie with the family.
If you love a unique space with interesting design features, a great location and a lovely indoor and outdoor dining space--choose the Viceroy Chicago. This renovation of an older property combines the reuse of original bricks with the new to create a very inviting space filled with original art and interesting designs. The elevator lobbies tickle your imagination with ceilings painted with Egyptian themes. There is a rooftop pool with lake views, and a cozy bar area to enjoy a bit of relaxation in the evening. Rooms have great set-ups for family travel and the hotel offers great amenities and activities focused on the younger visitor.
